[Well, Happy 2023 everyone and we might as well start the new year off with a fresh sandbox. In the 19dec22 Sandbox Mr scenes offered an intriguing suggestion (830am) in an attempt to eliminate the detritus of TDS and things gratuitously Trump from continually contaminating practically every other topic with yet another boring lap around the Trump barn. He suggested that RR add a Trump category and restrict posting of Trump-centric comments to that category. I envision it being structured like the Sandbox with dated, and perhaps even topical, labels so that the comment streams don’t become too long. I need to noodle on this and invite readers’ ideas about how it would work. gjr]

No, but if they aren’t SPELLED out in the Constitution, they are reserved to the States or to the people. NOT the Feds.
The FBI, the CIA and other three letter groups have recently been found to be violating our rights; let’s not have them or other three letter powers in DC be in charge of assuring our rights.

Repubs are putting on a clown show today. Trump the loser strikes again. His guy is going down.
WASHINGTON — Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) failed again Wednesday to win the House speaker’s gavel after coming up short of a majority in the fourth, fifth and sixth votes of this week…..
“In a statement on his website Wednesday, former President Donald Trump reiterated his support for McCarthy. The Freedom Caucus is home to Trump’s biggest backers in Congress, but McCarthy’s candidacy has split the group. And Trump’s endorsement apparently didn’t help.”

Except isn’t the same thing over and over. It took 9 ballots once in the 1920’s, and ~130 in 1855. This is what can happen when there’s a narrow majority and a new Speaker to be picked, as opposed to reelecting a former Speaker.
Patience, Grasshoppers. There will be different results, but your carping is to be expected… it’s what you do.

It is not a clown show; it is democracy. Only Democrats and establishment Republicans obey lock step with their ideological leaders and the lobbyists. These Republicans are individualists with their own opinions. I say go have the fight which has been brewing for 12 years. Also, Trump is clearly not the leader of MAGA; he just rides the wave of the individualists.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAMILTON ON THE HOUSE BATTLE
What would Alexander Hamilton make of the chaos among Republicans in the House right now? Maybe this passage of Hamilton from Federalist 15 provides a clue:
“A spirit of faction, which is apt to mingle its poison in the deliberations of all bodies of men, will often hurry the persons, of whom they are composed, into improprieties and excesses, for which they would blush in a private capacity.”

Of course, I would never take pleasure in another’s misery. There is a word for that. A long German sounding word.
Anyway, “The humiliation of Kevin McCarthy as he stands for Speaker of the House represents the humiliation of the Republican Party. It is humiliation wrought by a fringe that is greatly enjoying its attention. If you have any doubt of the humiliation, consider the ecstatic mainstream media coverage of the show. They love it. What accounts for their joy? I think I have a pretty good fix on it.
If that doesn’t give you a clue, take in the look on the face of Democrat Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Why is this man smiling? This is Hakeem’s dream. He may not even have to wait until 2024 to make his next move up the ladder.”

The German affiliate of MAGA is alive and well.
“Police have arrested 25 people accused of planning to overthrow the German government in a series of raids across the country.
The group is accused of trying to instate Heinrich XIII – a descendant of German royalty – as their leader. Among those arrested were members of the Reichsbürger (which translates as citizens of the Reich), a disparate movement of groups and individuals, including some with extreme-right views.
Reichsbürger adherents have been stopped from attempting violent action before, but this latest incident and its alleged members have caused greater concern.
A former member of the German parliament, who was also a judge until shortly after her arrest, was among the group. Birgit Malsack-Winkemann was a parliamentary deputy for the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), but left the party in 2021.
Several former soldiers were also arrested in connection with the coup plot. This is a cause for great concern for law enforcement, as such ties give possibly dangerous extremists access to weapons and trained individuals.”

The Biden administration published a congressionally mandated report highlighting the positive economic benefits the Keystone XL Pipeline would have had if President Biden didn’t revoke its federal permits.
The report, which the Department of Energy (DOE) completed in late December without any public announcement, says the Keystone XL project would have created up to 59,000 jobs and would have had a positive economic impact of up to $9.6 billion.
Immediately after taking office in January 2021, Biden canceled the pipeline’s permits, effectively shutting the project down.

The RR’s are quiet today on the blog. Pretty embarrassing for them to see their beloved GOP screw everything up so much. This all is happening because they barely won the House majority in November. IF they wpid have won 10 more seats for example the 20 or so rouge Republicans would have had no voice. You can thank Trump for all that with the roster of pathetic candidates he insisted should run. What do these freedom Freedom Caucus holdouts have against McCarthy?

So what does the Freedom Caucus do, they manipulate McCarthy and force him to cave to their demands.
In a major allowance to the the Crazy Caucus Republicans, McCarthy offered to lower from five to one the number of members required to sponsor a resolution to force a vote on ousting the speaker.
This should be fun. Now any member of Congress, Dem or GOP, can force a vote to have the speaker removed at any time and as often as they wish.
