[Well, Happy 2023 everyone and we might as well start the new year off with a fresh sandbox. In the 19dec22 Sandbox Mr scenes offered an intriguing suggestion (830am) in an attempt to eliminate the detritus of TDS and things gratuitously Trump from continually contaminating practically every other topic with yet another boring lap around the Trump barn. He suggested that RR add a Trump category and restrict posting of Trump-centric comments to that category. I envision it being structured like the Sandbox with dated, and perhaps even topical, labels so that the comment streams don’t become too long. I need to noodle on this and invite readers’ ideas about how it would work. gjr]

If you value liberty and free markets, as every Republican will tell you they do, then noncompete agreements should be intolerable. They deprive workers of something fundamental, the ability to go down the road and find a better job. Naturally, big business advocates — the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Wall Street Journal editorial board — are appalled at the FTC’s move.
So where are the “pro-worker” Republicans on this issue? Are they trooping to Fox News to applaud the proposed rule, pledging to support it with legislation that would show how committed they are to getting a fair shake for the “hardworking, blue-collar men and women” they say they represent?
No. The few conservatives who have said anything about it have criticized FTC chair Lina Khan for regulating, which happens to be her job. They say that if this is done at all, it should be done through legislation.
Are they offering such legislation? Of course not.

Back in 2018 Trump coined the phrase “shithole countries”. Since then the GOP rank and file has applied the moniker to US cities to deride what they consider liberal governments.
But the GOP has come to own their own epithet.
The GOP is the shithole party thanks to election denying conspiracy theorists and fraudsters and violent fanatics who have taken up Trump’s puckered ass torch and run with it.
The GOP has become more like a third world political party in the Middle East where violence is considered a response to puckered anus syndrome caused by an inability to handle the results of elections. The latest example can be found in New Mexico, neighbor to election denier Kari Lake.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/see-things-now-ve-never-110007359.html
But Solomon Pena decided to take it a step further. This puckered shithole decided to shoot up the houses of some people whom he thought were responsible for his election losses.

The convicted felon ban applies to be qualified for POTUS. Not sure if such a disqualification applies to the Congressional races, or in this case, state legislator contests. Definitely does not apply to many local jurisdictions, as evidenced by Marion Barry, former mayor of DC. They even build a statue for the former mayor in his honor. You will never see Jesse Jackson Jr or the Rev Al’s name on the presidential contenders list because of time served in the big house. Jesse Jackson yes, his son and daughter-in-law no.

Donald Trump 2024? Okay, if you insist,
“That’s Marla, yeah. That’s my wife,” Trump responded, according to the transcript. In addition to the woman in question very much not being Marla Maples, at the time of the photo, he was married to Ivana, and wouldn’t go on to wed Maples for several years.
Apparently wanting this weird, potentially damning scene to not play out any further, Trump’s attorney Alina Habba interjected, saying: “No, that’s Carroll.”
“Oh, I see,” Trump answered.
“The person you just pointed to was E. Jean Carroll,” Carroll’s lawyer told him.
After Trump’s attorney repeated this to him, the ex-president responded: “That’s Carroll?”
Beyond the obvious question—like, does the former president and current presidential candidate have dementia?—as The Washington Post notes, the incident may have “potentially undermin[ed]” Trump’s oft-repeated defense that Carroll was and is not his “type,” given that he cheated on hist first wife with Maples and later married her.
Elsewhere in the deposition, Trump falsely claimed that Carroll had said in a 2019 interview with Anderson Cooper that rape was sexy and that she enjoyed being assaulted.”

Bill EEEEE 4:04 – “If you value liberty and free markets, as every Republican will tell you they do, then noncompete agreements should be intolerable.”
Bill-ie boy wouldn’t know a free market if it bit him on the ass.
A free market allows adults to conduct business freely with the absolute minimum of govt intervention. The govt is useful as the guarantor of contract integrity, but the govt has no business as to what is in the contract. No one is forced to sign an NDA or a Non-Compete. If you don’t want to sign, then move along to a different company.
A free market allows the 2 parties to come to an agreement on the conditions of employment with regard to pay, hours and working conditions with zero interference from the govt. Obviously, either party can not trick or deceive the other party as to intentions, working conditions and pay. That is where the govt can hold the guilty party responsible.
That is a free market and one I would expect the Rs to honor.
Unfortunately, most Rs in power would not really want a free market any more than a Dem – another reason I am an independent.

Russian Telegram channels have published several videos that allegedly show the installation of a Pantsir-S1 air defence system at 8 Teterinsky Lane in Moscow.
OSINT analyst Michael Borowitz published a photo of the Russian Defence Ministry building on the Frunzenskaya Embankment, where a Pantsir-S1 was also allegedly installed.
At the beginning of the week, Russian Telegram channels also published photos of the S-400 air defence system, which was seen near the Losiny Ostrov (Island) National Park and in the fields of the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in Moscow. The media reported that trees had been cut down on Losiny Ostrov to create a site for air defence systems.

‘WaPo Admits: Russian Twitter Trolls Didn’t Influence 2016 Election’
As to the specific findings of the study, a few stand out.
“Only 1% of users accounted for 70% of exposures [to Russian disinformation accounts].”
“Exposure was concentrated among users who strongly identified as Republicans.”
“Exposure to the Russian influence campaign was eclipsed by content from domestic news media and politicians.”
“[There is] no evidence of a meaningful relationship between exposure to the Russian foreign influence campaign and changes in attitudes, polarization, or voting behavior.”
In other words, the vast majority of people exposed to tweets from Russian trolls were Republicans and thus in most cases already Trump supporters, rendering the entire operation ineffective.

The WAPO headline reads,
THE CYBERSECURITY 202
Russian trolls on Twitter had little influence on 2016 voters
The real article points out that,
“But the study doesn’t go so far as to say that Russia had no influence on people who voted for President Donald Trump.
It doesn’t examine other social media, like the much-larger Facebook.
Nor does it address Russian hack-and-leak operations. Another major study in 2018 by University of Pennsylvania communications professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson suggested those probably played a significant role in the 2016 race’s outcome.
Lastly, it doesn’t suggest that foreign influence operations aren’t a threat at all.”

Hard to tell where Russian disinformation/influence and Fox and Trump separate, if they even do, as they are often on the same message.
Lends a lot of credibility to the disinformation to have a President/candidate and the most watched cable news network echoing the disinfo to the less than discerning consumers.
Arguably those two factors would carry as much or more weight than the disinfo by itself.

Yes Sir,
“Weaponization of government” is a charge being leveled by Republican extremists (e. g. Jim Jordan) in the 118 th Congress. Jim Jordan and his cohorts are doing Trump’s business in mounting an investigation of “wokeness” or suspected political bias in the Capital police, the FBI, and the US Military forces. This is about setting up the next coup attempt which is possibly coming as soon as 2024. This is about excoriating the military for not making certain that Trump succeeded in his “Big Lie” and for making sure that they are on board next time around.
Modern coups have been bloodless affairs in several Eastern European nations since the turn of this century, such as the one in Hungary, where Orbán took over the government with ease, and in Turkey where Erdogan did the same. The modern recipe for a coup involves rigging the vote, co-opting the Supreme courts of the land, and turning Congress or parliament into a rubber stamp body with no power except what is allowed by the Prime Minister, or President, aka the Dear Leader. If you get it right the first time no military intervention is necessary. There is just a docile slide into authoritarianism. My theory is that people are worried about their nation being overrun by migrants and they welcome a “strong man” to take on the task of being inhumane to people fleeing war, famine, drought, floods, cruelty, climate change so that the people need not bother their own conscience. In the case of America, the wealthy and the corporations seem to actively dislike democracy.
Docile slides into authoritarianism or single party power are not so easy to pull off in a nation that has been a republic for 240+ years. Republicans have been rigging the vote ever since they overturned the pre-clearance section of the Voting Rights Act (2013).
