   Those that use Netflix, I encourage you to watch the remake of “Red Dawn”.
   The original was about a Russian invasion, this one is about N. Korea.
   From the use of an EMP device, to the “rebuilding” of the economy. (N. Korean style.) At least they went after Liberal Washington state first. ( Russia took the east coast)
   The movie looks more realistic by the day. Even the Southern boarder was in play. Watch the flick to see it’s “role”. ( Life imitating art?)

   Have any of the readers been following the Oklahoma earthquake/fracking controversy? There is growing evidence and debate that fracking is causing earthquakes in Oklahoma. In one case in 2011 there was a 5.7 earthquake called the Prague [Oklahoma] Earthquake Sequence. Dr. Elizabeth Cochran, a seismologist with the USGS working with the Universty of Oklahoma has claimed that the injection of groudwater back into the ground may have caused the earthquake swarm. Not all scientists agree, even at the USGS. Anyway there are many more earthquakes in the last few years than the normally get. Man made or natural accordance? A interesting topic that fracking can cause earthquakes. Maybe some other readers will have more info?

   Read the story closely about quakes. It says “may”, maybe, we don’t know or can’t confirm. It is crap. Fracking takes place way down in the shale. There is no proof and will never be. The earthquake stuff is spread by the haters.

   Earthquakes swarms happen all around the world where fracking is not present. Recently there was a swarm of small earthquakes north of Reno.
   Officials say there were 17 earthquakes centered in an area about two miles east of Sun Valley, beginning Sunday at 12:25 a.m. The largest quake registered at a 1.7-magnitude around 3 a.m.
   There was no reports of damage. The Seismological Lab says earthquakes of this size are usually too small to be felt.
   In an announcement on its website, the Seismological Lab says:
   “With the occurrence of earthquake swarms there is a small increase in the likelihood of larger potentially damaging events. The Nevada-eastern California has a history of large earthquakes and citizens should always consider taking steps to prepare for potentially damaging earthquake ground shaking. Earthquakes are unpredictable and can occur at any time.”
   Here is one in Alaska, were there is no fracking:
   A bizarre “swarm” of earthquakes in recent weeks around the northwest Alaska village of Noatak is confounding scientists and unsettling residents who last felt a good shake more than 20 years ago.
   A magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck just after 4 a.m. Monday marks the fifth quake of exactly that size measured near the village since April, according to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center. Hundreds of aftershocks, some measuring magnitude 4 or greater, have also rippled through the area.
   Or how about his in swarm in Maine, no fracking here:
   AUGUSTA, Maine — A series of small earthquakes has been affecting the Bucksport-Searsport area in the past few days, beginning with events on April 30, according to Maine Geological Survey officials.
   As many as 30 very small events — called a swarm — have occurred, all measuring less than 2 on the Richter magnitude scale, said Dr. Robert Marvinney, Maine state geologist and director of the Maine Geological Survey, under the Maine Department of Conservation.
   “This swarm may continue for several days, but there is no need for alarm,” Marvinney said. “This type of swarm has occurred before in Maine. While local residents may feel these earthquakes, because they occur only a few miles below the surface, they are well below the magnitude 5 threshold at which damage might occur.”
   Earthquake swarms happen all around the world were there is no fracking. One has to look at the total world population of earthquake swarms, and then calculate the probability that this Oklahoma swarms was cause by other factors than those created the total population of swarms.

   Gary, being one who watches what Mama Earth does with fascination, and checks the USGS earthquake page on a daily basis,( I’m not convinced one bit that the two are connected. Fracking is far from new. It’s been done for decades. And only now the process gets the blame? Next time you visit the above mentioned web site, take a gander over near Clear Lake, if You want to see “man made” shakers.
   There is a geothermal power plant there.
   As for OK. quakes, they are a lot deeper than what they are drilling.
   Just pumping fluid out of the ground gives the possibility of earth movement.
   What happens to a soda bottle under a vacuum? Something is going to give.
   (Just a wild guess)
   There is noticeable ground displacement of what Mama earth is doing right here.
   Being one who built roads for a living, I tend to notice the “little stuff” in workmanship. About half way to GV from PV , a hump started to develop about 10 years ago. Basically “uplift”. That whole section of road has new hills and valleys. The guys at CALTRANS blame it on “swelling rock”. Since they went to school, they must be right. ( just not buying it)
   I think something bigger is at work.

   Fracking? Hey, my daughter’s college educated boyfriend with a masters from Princeton is all concerned/inquisitive about Oklahoma. Just like Mr. Gary is (the inquisitive part). Does seem odd to me, but historically there has been some big mamma jamma quakes in those parts….many moons ago.
   Now, boys and girls, when it gets hot, things expand. When it gets cool, things contract. If there was ever a bone-e-fied reason the blame Global Warming, this is the perfect situation. Swelling rock syndrome does not apply exclusively to those who took the little blue pill.
   Of course my daughter’s friend got his degree in Anthropology from Cal and his masters in the same course of study so I would not classify him as an expert in such matters. But all is not lost. He finally took a job as a plumber’s helper and now has moved on taking a job as a newspaper reporter in a small town over near the coast. No experience but he has potential. Don’t pay much but it keeps him out of trouble and broke enough to move in with his parents. New sandbox digression #1. Fracking? Its Global Warming! Swelling Sweating Rock Syndrome (SSRS)is no laughing matter.

    Like Walt I watch the USGS map almost daily to see where the earthquakes are and I always see activity in Oklahoma. Awhile ago I got curious why Oklahoma and started reading. It is hard for me to ignore articles like this from the University of Boulder, but being a skeptic of facts I keep reading. Here is a snippet of what they said and a link to their press release if that is okay Dr. Rebane.

    “Prior to 2008, Oklahoma averaged about two earthquakes per year with a magnitude of 3.0 or greater, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This year, between Jan. 1 and May 2, there have been 145. Overall, there has been a 40-fold increase in seismic activity in Oklahoma since 2008. The increase in earthquakes in the state coincided with a boom in hydraulic fracturing, which generates a large amount of wastewater.”
    The jury is still out for me, but that is a pretty damming statement in my book. Maybe it has to do with the geology of Oklahoma as opposed to North Dakota? Anyway thanks for insight all.

    GaryS 710am – I don’t know, but it sounded like the U of Colorado guys know what they are talking about. The report would have been more complete if it had also cited the frequency of earthquake swarms (vs single events) that the region has experienced. Swarms usually occur when there is a resettling after either pressure change or a slip.

    One has to love Russ’ logic on OK quakes… Swarms happen everywhere so therefore the swarms in OK can’t be related to fracking. On a similar note, the BBC has announced that it will no longer give climate deniers equal time on BBC shows because it gives the false impression that the scientific evidence is equal for both sides when the scientific evidence overwhelmingly supports climate change. It is so wonderful to live on a flat earth where oil companies provide all the science one needs to make important decisions about the environment and the corporate media keeps passing the information on to consumers. Oh yeah, and those dumb Euros won’t take our GMOs or our bovine growth hormone laced meat either. What is wrong with them, don’t they like tumors? Tumors greatly increase the value of one’s health industry stock. They just don’t get it do they.

    It has to suck to have a outlook on life as JoeK has. My goodness, you should go live in a cave far far away. Big oil supplies the energy that makes the planet work and that product and all its derivatives has extended life for all who care. But I guess JoeK likes “little oil” where we go down to the local square and draw a spigot of oil to refine ourselves.
    Or we can spend 50K and buy a set of solar power panels and store the juice in those lead batteries under the house.
    The BBC cares not about free speech and they hate conservatives. Look what they did to Murdoch’s son and the others there in the cell phone scam regarding Brown and other Parliament members. Though Brown did the same things he is a liberal and gets a pass by the BBC.

    A bit of preening is justified every now and then. Now that the BS about Romney/Ryan has begun to dry and fall away, and we see the rolling disaster that the Obama administration has been, and we consider Hillary or Joe or LizW as our progressive choices, … . Anyway, this is what I ruminated about on 8 Jan 2014 that is now beginning to get more serious traction in the press.
    Speaking of Obama and the legacy he will leave in 2016, what if the Republicans again gave Americans the chance to vote for Romney and Ryan. Will we as an electorate have learned from our devastating mistake in 2012? Then we re-elected a man who was demonstrably ignorant in economics, foreign affairs, and constitutional law – a man with no executive experience or legislative accomplishment, in addition to a “sealed” past and an extraordinary ability to lie that is only exceeded by his propensity to do so. And we have reaped what we sowed.
    Against the Romney/Ryan ticket the Dems will run Hillary, who despite her past titles, comes with no discernible accomplishment, equally absent executive experience, and baggage that demonstrates her ability to make critical decisions and handle the ‘3pm phone call’ – forget about her handling the ‘3am phone call’. The alternative to Hillary may be the buffoon from Central Casting – Wrong Way Joe. Anyway, it’s worth a thought.

    Interesting…..
    There actually was a weird jet flying north of Nevada City, just a little before noon on July 4th. I saw it myself as I was watching the parade on Broad Street; it was flying at an amazingly low altitude (~3K AGL), heading due east just over the S. Yuba River canyon. It appeared to be climbing to get over the summit. It definitely had a commercial jet configuration but I did not see Southwest markings, it was more white than anything else. It looked like a DC-9 (engines in the rear), not a 737, but it was too far away for me to be exactly sure. I thought at the time, “wow, what a great view those passengers are getting.”
    For “Walt” to extrapolate that this jet was delivering illegal alien children to Beale, then going back to the Texas/Mexican border for another load, is just plain stupid. Did he call anyone or do any further research to confirm his bizarre supposition? Of course not.
    What a coincidence Michael….I saw news footage of an aircraft matching this description exactly (DC-9/MD-80/90 series) disgorging our new “guests” just this weekend in Southern California.

    Difference between Israel and the ragheads is the ragheads target civilians on purpose and exclusively, never military targets. Its ok to target Israeli civilians on purpose, but never ok for Israel to inflict collateral damage. Nothing new under the liberal sun.
    Obama has already praised Hamas and slammed Israel….a US President’s words have much impact….we have Hamas and Company the green light….again

    We now have the ongoing battle on who owns America’s water. The EPA not only tells us what we can and can’t do with CO2 it is claiming that any water which eventually flows downhill is theirs. Get ready for more fun. Somehow the SCOTUS allowed CO2 to be in their purview and my guess is they will allow via the Commerce Clause, the usurpation of our property rights regarding H2O. The Washington Post had a BS editorial yesterday about this. So don’t spit on the ground because the EPA police will be lurking to claim it.

    Doc.. the LIB page has been sending “salvoes” this way for a long time. Nothing new… One this is certain. They are “outnumbered, and outgunned.” ( outclassed is what really stings deep)
    Yes, Todd, Yuba City is where we have to go to see the flick, since our local theaters are owned by a devout LIB family. But if Mike Moore lays another egg, every one in town will have it showing.

    Seems one of our sheriff’s officers came across a live grenade today.
    The radio traffic was a little sketchy as they tried to hide what they were talking about.
