[Checking back to my 1jan17 post below, I can’t help but smile as I reprise that posting and again advise RR readers to prepare for a 2018 that will both entertain and astonish those of us who take a keen interest in the world’s stage on which the play of comedy and farce –  i.e. of politics and politicians – will quicken its pace.  Without an unforeseen intervention by the Almighty, the Dems will rue the day that they offered to the American electorate replays of the Trump Derangement Syndrome as their only public policy of record.  Happy 2018!  gjr]

***

[Again a Happy New Year to all RR readers and its diligent band of commenters of all political shades who do their dharma battles on these pages.  This year promises to be even more exciting than 2016 – who knew that Trump would win? – if one can conceive that possibility.  Last New Year’s day (1jan16) I opened a new sandbox with these words.

Happy New Year! to all RR readers.  This year will turn out more exciting and surprising than any of us can anticipate.  From the socialists' perspective, they are at the cusp of a victory from which they can deal a deathblow to American capitalism and institute their new economic order as part of the country's fundamental transformation that Obama promised and has already launched.  We conservatarians also see this as a cusp year, but given the disarray of the Republicans, it will be one from which a 2016 Democrat defeat will deliver little besides delaying the day of reckoning between collectivism and open markets capitalism.  So I thought it would be appropriate to start the year with a fresh sandbox.  gjr]

Don, the abortion issue is a good example. I think it should be leftbup to the states, but it was the Supreme Court who took control over the issue for the last 50 or so years and nationalized it. We do not live in a perfect world.

Looks like Trump and Sessions may have the last laugh on immigration and pot. They are going to flood the states with law enforcement and not a thing the states can do to stop it.

PaulE 901am – States’ rights are a complex topic. Both of us are for more than fewer of them as ensconced in the Constitution by our Founders. Considering what Colorado is doing on pot, and California has already done on the Second Amendment – both can make an American law abider become a criminal when simply crossing a state line – what kind of general principles or rules would you apply to delineate the landscape of states’ rights in the form of ‘these kinds of things should be uniformly federal and these kinds of things should be specific to states’? Or should we just continue pissing and moaning at each other, claiming the jurisdiction of rights be determined by our individual ideologies?

I was specifically referring to Trumps own position on MJ issues when he said it should be left up to the States. Pretty clear he flipped on his own position. As a proponent of States Rights you have repeatedly told me that States should have more freedom than they do and act as a kind of lab to test new ideas.
Here is a direct quote from Trump
“In a television interview on July 29, 2016 with KUSA-TV in Colorado, Trump said: “I wouldn’t do that [using federal authority to shut down recreational marijuana], no … I wouldn’t do that … I think it’s up to the states, yeah. I’m a states person. I think it should be up to the states, absolutely.”

During his campaign for president, Donald Trump “committed to honoring states’ rights when it comes to marijuana legalization.”
    — Gavin Newsom on Friday, February 24th, 2017 in a letter
TRUE: During campaign, Trump pledged to leave marijuana legalization up to states
By Chris Nichols on Tuesday, February 28th, 2017 at 6:00 a.m.
Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump speaks Friday, July 29, 2016, in Colorado Springs, Colo. (Stacie Scott/The Gazette via AP)
The Trump Administration signaled last week it could crack down on recreational marijuana in states such as California where voters legalized pot last November, marking a possible change from the Obama Administration’s more permissive approach.
“There is still a federal law we need to abide by in terms of when it comes to recreational marijuana and other drugs of that nature,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters on Feb. 23, 2017. “I do believe that you’ll see greater enforcement.”
The next day, Democratic California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom urged Trump in a letter to follow the hands-off pot approach he claimed Trump had promised during his campaign.
“A Quinnipiac poll released yesterday says that 71-percent of US voters (say) that the government should not interfere with states that passed legalized marijuana and during your campaign, you committed to honoring states’ rights when it comes to marijuana legalization,” Newsom wrote on Feb. 24, 2017.
Newsom also helped write California’s voter-approved ballot measure, Proposition 64, that legalized recreational marijuana last November. He is running for California governor in 2018.
We wanted to know whether Newsom was right: Had Trump “committed” during his campaign to leaving recreational pot up to the states?
    .
In a television interview on July 29, 2016 with KUSA-TV in Colorado, Trump said: “I wouldn’t do that [using federal authority to shut down recreational marijuana], no … I wouldn’t do that … I think it’s up to the states, yeah. I’m a states person. I think it should be up to the states, absolutely.”
In a radio interview with WWJ Newsradio 950 in Michigan on March 8, 2016, Trump said “I think it certainly has to be a state — I have not smoked it — it’s got to be a state decision … I do like it, you know, from a medical standpoint … it does do pretty good things. But from the other standpoint, I think that it should be up to the states.”
At a campaign rally in Sparks, Nevada on Oct. 29, 2015, Trump said: “The marijuana thing is such a big thing. I think medical should happen — right? Don’t we agree? I think so. And then I really believe we should leave it up to the states. It should be a state situation … but I believe that the legalization of marijuana – other than for medical because I think medical, you know I know people that are very, very sick and for whatever reason the marijuana really helps them – … but in terms of marijuana and legalization, I think that should be a state issue, state-by-state.”

I believe Trump was clearly referring to medical marijuana. Who among us would deny Grandma her medical marijuana to help with nauseousness after Kemo treatments?
Seems to me that since 90% of Northern California hooch leaves our state by crossing state lines, then at that point it becomes a Fed issue. I am certain Colorado would not relish CA weed coming into their state. Commence Clause and all that. Interstate transport stuff.
Now, since renegades growing a few hundred pounds without a license are avoiding detection and robbing the state and local coffers, then those lawbreakers need to pay up, one way or another. I am sure tens of thousands of pounds of dope will be sold at the future 3 dispensaries in Nevada City each quarter, thus keeping the doors open on Broad Street, and of course, off Broad Street as well in the 40 acre burg.
With the taxes from recreational marijuana pouring in, maybe Nevada City can finally pay for the EIR on the wooden boardwalk jutting out on Commerical Street, a public thoroughfare. Each year the temp EIR is rolled over, the price of a real EIR keeps going up. From 3k to 5k to maybe 6k this year. All in all, barely a drop in the bucket when the dispensaries open, but I have most certainly digressed.
Don’t see Federal prosecutors going after State and local licensed (and inspected) growers….unless they get greedy and try to find an unauthorized buyer for their excess produce. It’s up to the discretion of the federal prosecutors. They rarely look at anything under 250 pounds anyway, if at all. It’s the Treasury Department (IRS) and the more aggressive and threatening Franchise Tax Board that should put the fear of God in the renegade bigger growers. The tax collectors can get real nasty and ruin your decade, not to mention that other department that lays the hammer down on those not paying into Workers Comp.
Conflating Trump’s medical marijuana statements with recreational marijuana is sort of like mixing in illegal aliens with authorized immigrants.

Paul. Sorry, I still don’t read your links, nor intend to. Just the facts. . You have been rather discredited here, but I will agree with everything you say. A broken clock and all that. Trump lied, Punchy cried. Now, now, want me kiss your boo-boo?
Here is a Peace offering, Punchy.
Here is a quote from a Establishment Republican writer you should rather enjoy. Trump indeed brings out that something special in his distractors. Oh Jonah, there are children who read your articles. I have never heard such talk in all my life!
“[Donald] Trump is less an aberration than a leader for his time. In his rhetorical contempt for free speech, his ignorance of basic constitutional facts, his addiction to drama and ratings, his personalization of every political question and conflict, and his uncanny ability to bring out the same qualities in his biggest detractors, he breathes new life into H.L. Mencken’s definition of democracy as ‘the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.’” —Jonah Goldberg
If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane. Too late for some.
“I don’t want to hear about the silence of me. I want to hear about the silence of Melania Trump. I want to hear from her. She has so much that’s valuable to say. And so does Ivanka. I want her to speak now.” —Meryl Streep on the sexual misconduct scandal in Hollywood
My bellylaugh of the week: “I’m sad that [Al Franken] resigned. I happen to know him for decades and decades and I can tell you that all he cares about is the well-being of the lives of his constituents in Minnesota. It’s just all he thinks about, it’s all he cares about — and his wife.” —Sarah Silverman
“Cold weather proves climate change, warm weather also proves climate change, but weather isn’t climate because shut up skeptic.” —Twitter satirist @hale_razor
This one really cracks me up. Too funny.

    Archie.
Bill Clinton did say that “hiring Janet Reno was the biggest mistake of his Presidency”. What he did not say is the “two for the price of one” President put his wife, the First Lady, in charge of choosing his AJ.
First, Hillary picked Zoe Baird, whose nomination was withdrawn 8 days later when it was revealed not only did she hire two illegal aliens (a Federal offense), Zoe failed to pay the illegals’ SS taxes until her nomination arose, aka, the Nanny Tax. Bubba and Hillary thought it was no big deal, but the public thought differently. Much differently.
Then Hillary choose Kimba Wood. That nomination was withdrawn after one day. She too hired an undocumented minigrate, but at least it was technically legal at the time of employment. The outcry pulled her ass before she even made it out the starting blocks.
Finally, Hillary choose “I haven’t met the right guy yet “ Janet Reno. She served 8 years, with a whole lot of shaking going on.
Well, if the former First Lady was the most qualified person ever to run for President (per Hilary Hodge), I would like to see either’s definition of “qualified”. With experience like that, who needs enemas. :).
