[Happy New Year! to all RR readers.  This year will turn out more exciting and surprising than any of us can anticipate.  From the socialists' perspective, they are at the cusp of a victory from which they can deal a deathblow to American capitalism and institute their new economic order as part of the country's fundamental transformation that Obama promised and has already launched.  We conservatarians also see this as a cusp year, but given the disarray of the Republicans, it will be one from which a 2016 Democrat defeat will deliver little besides delaying the day of reckoning between collectivism and open markets capitalism.  So I thought it would be appropriate to start the year with a fresh sandbox.  gjr]

    Climate Change Update
The local left often makes snide remarks about my relationship with Anthony Watts who produces the most read climate change blog on the Internet. One lefty disparaged Anthony’s contribution to the climate change discussion by claiming he was nothing more than a Chico radio station meteorologist. Well, he is a meteorologist with a long reach, his blog Watts Up With That had 42 million views in 2015. Forty (40) times more views than the local lefty warmer blogs.
    Wordpress writes:
About 2,500,000 people visit MoMA in New York every year. This blog was viewed about 42,000,000 times in 2015. If it were an exhibit at MoMA, it would take about 17 years for that many people to see it.
WUWT remains the #1 climate related blog in the world. A ranking I am sure distresses our local lefty cult of global warmers a great deal. It is hard to refute the facts when they have no counter argument, much easier to attack the messenger.
The global danger of climate change is one of the arguments that the progressive are losing in the public forum. However, the socialist in Washington are determined to take action to control the climate which will have long-term economic consequences. Once again, the elites know what is best for the people, even though the people reject the threat of climate change. I think that Anthony and WUWT has played a significant role in shaping that public opinion with facts about global warming. Yes, Martha, it really is just a natural cycle. Yes, human activities have had an impact, but it is too small to measure.
Congratulation to Anthony for his success in producing a highly regarded climate related blog.

    Dunning-Kruger, anyone?
A short while back a recent visitor to the Unnamed One’s hard left blog, with a BS/PhD in Computer Science no less, decided to lift a large amount from a RR post of mine in a now closed comment thread for a little mischief. Since he chose to post this unbalanced critique behind the Corpulent Curtain where my posts get blocked, or even worse, modified by the frustrated Former Union Editor himself in a major ethics breach, I’m bringing the topic into today’s Sandbox.
First a bit of agreement… Jeffie, as is his wont, first went after the trivial that was a feature, not a flaw. I broke an American grammar convention, putting a period after, rather than before, a double quote but a Peeline fan agreed with me on that one:
    December 20, 2015 at 10:33 pm
    John Mashey

To be fair, putting punctuation inside quotes in American English has always seemed weird to me. I prefer British style, which is not only more logical, but is more regular for software to parse. A C-language statement is:
    const char *strings[] = {“one”,”two”,”three”};

I prefer the Stroustrup style over K&R:
    const char* strings[] = {“one”,”two”,”three”};
// and have been using it where I can since acquiring the C++ ARM the month it was published… but I digress.
Jeffie might learn something by reading Slate on the subject, as he’s behind the times… it’s called Logical Punctuation; imagine that. It’s even in the Style Guide issued by the Linguistic Society of North America.
    http://www.slate.com/articles/life/the_good_word/2011/05/the_rise_of_logical_punctuation.html

Of course, Mr Goodknight may have a worse Dunning-Kruger issue.

    Maybe not.

    He wrote:
“Edmund Howard, only half (52%) of Michael Mann’s peers in the American Meteorological Society believe one half or more of the warming of the last 100 years is due to man, and that includes all man’s actions including deforestation, emissions of soot (aka black carbon) and CO2.
They determined this not by an anonymous web survey, or a survey of papers by an activist without any real science background (Oreskes) or by a quick scanning by a team of activist “citizen scientists” without much if any science education (John Cook et al)… they actually asked them.”
    In the real world:
‘‘Naomi Oreskes is Professor of the History of Science and Affiliated Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences. She recently arrived at Harvard after spending 15 years as Professor of History and Science Studies at the University of California, San Diego, and Adjunct Professor of Geosciences at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Prof of History, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH’
    OR, just see Wikipedia page.

Let’s look more closely at that “real world” Mashey inhabits.
Oreskes’ undergraduate work was in “Mining Geology”. Just what is that?
“Mining geology is an applied science which combines the principles of economic geology and mining engineering to the development of a defined mineral resource. Mining geologists and engineers work to develop an identified ore deposit to economically extract the ore.”
There’s a reason there isn’t a Nobel Prize in Prospecting. No, that isn’t a real science background, and all the rest of those citations aren’t in the hard sciences, either. History of Science is a dodge; she’s been a paid activist for years and as far as I’m concerned she lost all credibility when, in a dog & pony show for Merchants of Doubt, she slimed Freeman Dyson, one of the greatest scientists of the last century, by asserting (on a CSPAN program) Dyson’s climate heresies were just the words of an old man past his prime looking for attention.
In the real world, that’s what you do when you are unable to win an argument on the merits.

On Cook et al (2013), a few of the authors are:

If Mashey had parsed that paragraph of mine logically, he’d have noted I wasn’t making a claim about Cook and his co-authors being unqualified but rather the legion of “citizen-scientist” volunteers who scanned the abstracts of twelve THOUSAND papers for data for Cook & Co. to cook. From the Methodology section: “This letter was conceived as a ‘citizen science’ project by volunteers contributing to the Skeptical Science website”.
Think GIGO, the classic Garbage In, Garbage Out problem. The “citizen scientists” weren’t scientists nor were they disinterested observers, yet they divined the attitude of authors of real papers in subjects they were unqualified to read (in the Oxford sense of the word “read”).
OK, so let’s follow the rest of Mashey’s screed:

John Cook has a BS Physics, and is working on PhD in climate-related topic.
Dana Nuccitelli has BA Astrophysics UC Berkeley and MS Physics UC Davis

Nice to see Mashey thinks a BA/BS in Physics is enough to ward off a Dunning-etc charge for climate activists, even if a specialty that doesn’t focus on terrestrial issues (Cook and Nucci were both astrophysics)… perhaps he’ll engage on facts in evidence here with both George and I; we both meet and exceed that standard. Of course, Cook’s PhD is to be in PsyOps Climate Propaganda, not a science, and is apparently working full time trying to classify Climate Heresy as a mental illness. Then there’s Nuccitelli’s Masters in a program that ends with the MS Physics only if one drops out or gets kicked out of the PhD Physics program… which was it? As Barbie might say, “Physics is Hard!”, and it isn’t shameful to decide it isn’t for you, or the Faculty to make the decision for you.

The list is a bit light on atmospheric physics and meteorology, but the GIGO problem would remain whoever Cook enlisted in the effort. Many activists, including Cook, are fully vested in maintaining the ‘97%’ facade of Doran & Zimmerman and so ignore the actual data… that half of the AMS professional membership (including the likes of Michael Mann) think most of the warming of the last century was natural variations.
Finally, Mr. Mashey, I have met all too few Computer Scientists who took the same math and physical science that mathematics, physical science or engineering majors take. The same lower division chem that chemists take, the same physics that physicists take, the same math the mathematicians take. Physical chemistry, chemical physics, statistical and thermal physics. Fluid dynamics.
You? If not, how do you escape the conclusion that your PhD in Computer Science is as much a D-K risk factor for you that MD, Genetics and Law terminal degrees have for local climate activists?

In his 534am Mr Tozer links us to a report on the latest attempts by the progressive elites in Congress to abrogate the First Amendment. RR has long maintained that among the toxic social policies of the Left is its asymmetrical treatment of free speech. Now there appears to be a strong movement to start bringing elements of sharia to America, specifically in citing as ‘hate speech’ any reports on radical Islam’s murderous global rampage, and its silent acceptance and polled support by ‘moderate Muslims’ living in the west. From their perspective it is the will of Allah at work, from ours it is an evil that now infects those of us who see it as yet another tool with which to implement central planning and control.

Speaking of Sharia Law one aspect of it that is supported by our own Toddler is punishment by death for certain drug violations. Todd supports public execution by firing squad for those convicted of selling Pot to minors. The Saudis prefer be-headings. Here’s the latest from our our pals, the Saudi’s.
“Amnesty International said in November that at least 63 people had been executed since the start of the year for drug-related offences. That figure made up at least 40% of the total number of executions in 2015, compared to less than 4% for drug-related executions in 2010. ”

“deal a deathblow to American capitalism and institute their new economic order as part of the country’s fundamental transformation”
Yes, and the world will be better off for it. All multinational conglomerate capitalism has accomplished is to further concentrate the world’s wealth and power into the hands of the affluenza affected elite, not unlike medieval feudalism, and poisoned the planet for the rest of us. When the prime operative is profit what could possibly go wrong? Tobacco interest lied about the health hazards of their products, the fossil fuel industry lies about climate change, Volkswagon lied about their cars, the list goes on and on; all in the name of securing yet more wealth for those who already have more than they will ever need regardless of how lavish/disgusting their consumptive lifestyles are. Humanity, as a whole, has evolved from small groups, to tribes, to city states, to nations and now will have to create a global community to face the multitude of problems it faces. Multinational conglomerate capitalism is not the solution to the world’s problems, it is the unsustainable problem; the elephant in the bathroom. It is 19th century thinking in the 21st century; pillage and plunder and the public good be damned. Surviving the repercussions that unbridled greed has bestowed upon the planet will require cooperation among nations and peoples. If you wish to call that collectivism, then so be it.

Hey Paul Emery, yes death to drug dealers, especially of children. Firing squad, hangman, lethal injection, electric chair, gas chamber, use them all. The drug dealers are a virus, a bacteria on the populace. They need removal. The Saudi’s do what they do as does Singapore. Clean country that Singapore. So yes, death to the drug dealers of children.

re RobertC’s 1148am – It appears that Mr Cross believes the historical creation of wealth for the world’s poor and the improvement of that sector’s QoL was all due to the relentless efforts of the poor and afflicted themselves struggling into the teeth of greedy capitalists who have sought to hold them in their place for the last two centuries. Apparently these benighted masses were content to remain sanguine in their destitution for all the preceding millennia until motivated to pull themselves up by their bootstraps just as their oppressors changed from heritable royalty to industrialists and traders and technologists.
We have had great examples of how wealth was created and the environment trashed under egalitarian collectivist regimes – USSR and Red China come to mind. Today examples of such governance and social organization continue to illustrate the benefits of what Mr Cross seems to propose, only this time on a global scale. Or did I overlook the apologetic that ‘yes, but this time we’re going to do it right’?

The Saudis executed about 48 evil doers. Most were Sunnis, about 44 of them. What got the Iranians upset was 4….count them…4 measly Shites were hung or beheaded. The rest were Al Qaida members and a few Sunni criminals. The one dude that got Iran’s ire up was a Shite leader who was advocating the overthrow of the House of Saud.
Remember that the House of Saud and the population of Saudi Arabia are Sunnis. The Iranians are Shi’tes. Never the train shall meet.
We need The Saudis to balance the power of Iran. They are playing their games in Yemen right now. Iran is pouring guns and support into Yemen, so Saudi Arabia is pouring their military support into Yemen. A proxy war if you prefer. The US Navy is messing with the Iranian Navy to prevent resupplying Yemen’s Shities and the Russians are messing with our Navy off Yemen.
iSIS treats the Sunnis terribly, so everybody fights ISIS, including our proxy Syrian rebels, the Russians, The Kurds, the Iranian Revoluntionary. Guard, as well as the former Sunni military commanders and militias from Saddam’s fractured army.
World War 3 could start there anytime some stupid Turkish Missle shoots down a Russia warplane flying over that 6 mile wide finger on the outer border of Turkey. Planes fly over that finger all the time and it takes them a few seconds. Just cross your fingers and hope nobody does something stupid with all the powers there itching to blast some Sunnis or conversly, some Shi’tes. Obama grandpappy and pappy is from the Shi’tes, which may explain his blind love for The Brotherhood and equally blind trust of Iran. What a mess.

Tozer, indeed the Bonanza Market has two (2) prominent orange signs in its window advertising Wild Game Jerky. Its quite a bizarre disconnect from the usual stuff in downtown Nevada City. More of a “what the hell is that all about” provoking smiles. BTW, the town is booming with new businesses and eateries. Hadn’t been in town much since Halloween (mainly due to lack of parking during the holidays) but spent quite an enjoyable afternoon tooling around town yesterday. TONS of visitors- even the National Hotel seemed busy. Mother in law is in love with the local beer.

jon smith, saw Los Mineros owner prepping for dinner when I went by later- about 4PM. Don’t really understand the hours either, but hope they get it sorted out. The business is there and ready to eat. I don’t know the financing of Three Forks, but man is that place crawling with customers. Spectacular beer and pizza.

Oh my. I thought this would simply go away, but nooooo. Someone got fired for tweeting “Ball Lives Matter”, a funny Twitter account attached to the big ball drop on New Year’s in NYC. Fired? It’s a square ball account. Geez, all I can say is Geez Louise. To the moon, Alice, to the moon.

Now, to those who say call 911 first, I say that can come later. 3 against one with access to his home and family.

BTW, didn’t spot a single homeless person on the sidewalks of Nevada City, anywhere. No one yelling and spitting at visitors even in the historically bad places like the Bonanza lot or Commercial Street. Callanan Park was clean and full of people reading the plaques, the boardwalk was clean and used by visitors eating lunch. The police and town leaders have done a great job.

    Jon-
I will agree that Three Forks has punched out some good beers. Emerald Pool is very good. Very skimpy $18.00 pizzas (in the European tradition 4 dabs of cheese) and $8.00 “Seven minute egg” (foo foo speak for soft boiled egg) salad are priced for trimmers and tourists, not value conscious locals. Jernigans, South Pine, and Lefty’s are more my style.

Jon, good report. 2 signs? Hmm, that talk didn’t work out as planned. :). Oh well, life goes on. My late Mother loved the art galleries in Nevada City, about 15 years ago I reckon. I had my birthday lunch with family at Ike’s the year before last. Good food and I was not disappointed because they clearly said they weren’t trying to copy Creole receipts, which can be overrated, IMHO. I appreciated that and had a Whatever Floats Your Boat or whatever the great waitress recommended to me and those who cannot decide when staring at a menu trying to look cool. The only disappointment I experienced was when the kids pointed to me when the check arrived. Oh well, it was a nice time on the patio.
Hey, can someone answer this for me. My Mom went to the Empire Mine and got down the shaft. Seems to me the only people who get the special tour are out of towners visiting. I have been here for decades and have not met one local who has gone on the tour by themselves, only when relatives arrive. Whatz up with dat??

Its a treat for my family also. Super nice people at Three Forks, and service has really gotten better since they opened 18 months ago. Nice to eat and drink at a place that feels like the City. Out of towners probably 90% of their food customers, but there are lots and lots of them who can throw down some serious money. Good for them. Very few trimmigrants spotted yesterday, but clearly they are an important seasonal addition to the area economy. Totally different vibe yesterday than in early October.
