[Given the Iran regime’s record over the last decades coupled with America’s demands to resolve the current conflict and put Iran on the path to peaceful and productive membership in the community of nations, what possible points are there left to resolve through negotiations? I think that’s generally true as the West seems to be in terminal decline and these things are mostly here to make me laugh.
By the same token (so to speak), Jason Arday seems like the perfect man for the job. I wouldn’t fire him, I’d put him in charge of whatever now-useless department he is in at Cambridge. For triple-duper fun, some smart guy should apply an AI to published papers and look for plagiarism everywhere, next up…search for trivialness or nonsense when Grok gets a bit smarter.
You might think we could bring down academic institutions left and right, or left and left, but my guess is that they would solidify in their craziness and griftiosity. A culture fueled by overpaid bureaucrats, non-profit ‘leaders’, and a whacked-out education establishment provides a lot of fun in it’s augering in.

You mentioned Estonia along with Sweden were good examples or former Communist leaning countries that have now mended their ways and are good examples for the rest to follow. The Estonian healthcare system is funded through mandatory contributions made through a payroll tax. The health insurance system covers about 95% of the population.

I suppose that one advantage to simple payer systems is that they have more bargaining power than in the US. I expect that US doctors, for example, make 3x what they do in Estonia. I’m thinking that psul can be in charge of telling all the health professionals they have to take a 60-70% haircut.

I’m sorry, Paul – your grasp of financial reality is akin to a 5 year old’s understanding of particle physics.
Health care costs have gone up at a rate far exceeding the rate of inflation and the cost of living. We need to look at the reasons for that. But good luck with that.
Those that do are demonized by the left and the Dems.
We already have “Medicare for all” and it’s going broke because of fraud and mismanagement. The Dems said they fixed health care with Obama care. Now they admit it didn’t. Why in the world should anyone listen to them come up with any more fixes?

Re healthcare: For the record Rebane Doctrine has prescribed a total tax revenue for our govt being 15% of GDP. If someone can figure out how govt run healthcare can be fit into that budget, then I’m for it as long as services are not cut. Comparing the US to Estonia is comparing apples and oranges on more dimensions than one (especially PaulE) can imagine.

We already do. It pays for Medi-Cal for bar musicians and is called ‘income tax’ and ‘property tax’.
The thing with this hand waving about healthcare is that it’s never organic, never defines an entire system, usually involves someone else paying your bills. I did get to spend a few minutes reading about how Estonian physicians flee the country to make more elsewhere. It probably does help that they have essentially no immigration (in fact, negative immigration) and aren’t actively inviting in the Third World.

psul: just to butt in here. If you defined what ‘similar to Estonia’ health care program was, besides just some ungainly handwaving about it being financed through a bespoke tax, I expect anyone might give a shot to that answer.
Heck, I’m usually in favor of taxes that only go to something or the other if it worked. The normal model is to raise money via, let’s say, an increased sales tax, to FIX THE STREETS or HELP THE CHILDREN GIT A SKATEPARK or something and then it gets spent on any old thing. Generally, the more that Progressives run matters, the more money is funneled to their good friends. Not that Conservatives don’t do that, but that’s often viewed as a crime, while Libruls view it as a feature.

There’s been this slow replacement of interviewers like Brian Lamb on CSPAN with Whoopi Goldberg on The View. Half-bright people with a POV are the order of the day, and naturally their need to give opponents what fer is nearly infinite. It’s the kind of thing that leads you to running Democracy Now! as some kind of pretend news show.
I’d give a break to the chattering nabobs if they actually did anything useful for a living in their day jobs, but they never ever do.

I was thinking about that this morning. If you bifurcate humanity into two great clumps of thinking, the first being people oriented and the second being more concerned with general principles, it all makes a lot more sense. The fascination about personalities in politics is really a kind of tribal (and feminine) kind of inclination and can be powerful as all get-out in some people.
The trouble comes when that mindset becomes ascendant. Corporations taken over by HR departments, schools and governments run by Karens, huge design and infrastructure decisions made by feelz.
This all works fine in a 50 person tribe, not so much on the large scale.

Listening to KNCO this fine morning. Some words about California and Nevada City and housing and the State forcing towns to rezone so they can have lots and lots of new dwellings. I was considering the sorts of things that make me laugh.
. Activists hit way way above their weight in Pride Town. Expect a ruckus for tinyhouses and leaky rental trailers and other silly ideas.
. This sort of thing brings non-profit grifters like flies to honey.
. The State wants 424 new dwelling units in a town with roughly 1600 that hasn’t grown much for decades.
. The State also wants infinite immigration from parts south, largely causing the statewide housing issue.
. You can argue there shouldn’t be a town at all, certainly no growth. Wildfire problems are unfixable and sustaining a place on retirees and coffee shops isn’t much of a future.
. As usual, the town is skint, so it’s not like there’s enough money for roads ‘n sewers ‘n water as it is.
. I’ll bet there’s lots of handwaving about ‘grant’ money. That’s the coin of the realm anymore and your special friends get more coins than everyone else.
Planned economies can be a hoot to watch.

Of course, his ignorance may be explained by the only news that he consumes is that carefully doled out by the lamestream media which would not mention such embarrassing items. Here’s what a quick search of who advocated $8/gal gas turns up.
In September 2008, before he was appointed as Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu gave an interview to the Wall Street Journal where he stated: “Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the ($8 to $10 per gallon) levels in Europe.” However, after joining the administration, Chu walked back his 2008 remarks.
An out-of-touch Democrat never has to apologize or admit his deficits.
