Allowing Russia to exercise asymmetric control of Ukraine’s airspace during its unwarranted, illegal, and rapacious invasion of the country is a big mistake.  At every turn in this war and the lead-up to it, the west, led from behind by Biden, has been visibly and overly concerned about how Putin may respond to this or that initiative designed to dissuade or delay the conquest of Ukraine.  Even politicians ignorant of history have now seen how such behavior does nothing to stay the hand of the tyrant.  Does no one on our side counsel that we too should demonstrate our strength against tyranny by actions that would concern Putin as to how we may react to his next atrocities?  At what point do we say ‘Enough!’?  No dictator with territorial ambitions has ever stopped on his own; they have all had to be stopped by nations allied with a common purpose to restore a humanitarian and peaceful world order.

My own strong opinion is that were we to populate Ukrainian skies with F-22s and F-35s (inviting other NATO nations to join), thousands of lives would be saved and the war would soon be over.  As Joe Lieberman also argues (here), in doing so we would be implementing “responsibility to protect”, the international norm that was unanimously adopted by the United Nations World Summit in 2005.  As I argued in the 12mar22 Scattershots (here), there is no natural stopping point for Putin before he controls the Eurasian continent.  And the more of his successes we continue to tolerate, the bigger will be the resulting war required to put an end to such conquests both in Europe and Asia.  If we don’t start Putin worrying about his own survival now, then when will there come a better time to re-establish the Westphalian world order?

[Addendum]  A longtime reader (@502pm below) contested the wisdom of NATO allies imposing a no-fly zone over Ukraine with the now widely accepted prognostication that such a tactic would immediately cause Putin to escalate his invasion into a cross-borders nuclear war – in short, WW3.  It was offered as the most probable response and ensuing scenario.  In my 547pm I rejected that as the only possible contingency, and offered the much more likely alternative contingency were we to continue Biden’s strategy of a limited defense that in effect is no defense.  This is corroborated hourly by Putin’s rapid expansion of the scope of his invasion, now expanding it into western Ukraine with attacks on multiple targets with scores of cruise missiles.

The west’s current response that lets Russia maintain air superiority to support his overwhelming numbers of mechanized infantry, armor, massed artillery, and amphibious assault will result in the inevitable ‘rubbling’ of Ukraine, no matter how ineptly the Russians execute their land attack.  To date, the west led by Biden, has made it clear that saving Ukraine is not our top priority; minimally irritating Putin is.  Given our feckless support and promise not to do more, President Zelensky will soon come to the decision to either surrender sooner and save Ukrainian lives or surrender later, leave Ukraine in a pile of rubble, and sacrifice tens of thousands of lives to no avail.  As he continues to shame NATO, Zelensky will do the right thing and save lives if the west is not willing to up the game and also start giving Putin worries as to what we will do.

And the latest surrender of Ukraine will cement Putin’s list of conquests – Georgia, Chechnya, Donbas, Crimea – as the proper strategy to continue expanding Russia.  We will inevitably then fight in Poland and the Baltics.  It will also affirm Xi Jinping’s assessment (repeating that of Hitler, Stalin, and Tojo) that America is now a weakened and fearful paper tiger, willing to surrender all in order to assure peace in our times.  Appeasement will most certainly bring about a drastic change to an Orwellian-structured world order.  My counter contingency of today’s ongoing appeasement has a long history of being practiced along with the mass suffering by all concerned.  And this contingency has a demonstrated high probability of coming to pass.  Putin pulling the nuclear trigger and thereby assuring his place in history as humanity’s ultimate pariah, eclipsing Mao, Stalin, and Hitler, is to me a reach and a low probability event.

So that’s the debate.  It’s all a matter of probabilities that the opposing sides assign to their contingencies going forward.  I’ll take my stand with history and Putin’s desire to live to fight another day.

[16mar22 update]  Brookings Institute leftwing maven William Galston is a nationally known regular contributor of progressive perspectives in the WSJ.  In the paper’s 16mar22 edition (here) he concludes “We shouldn’t risk nuclear war, but there’s still a lot more we could do” while arguing that we have a “moral obligation to help Ukraine against Russia”.  In supporting his argument he uses profoundly misguided and inappropriate examples of America’s reticence to intervene in the Rwandan slaughter of Tutsis and the 1964 stabbing of Kitty Genovese while bystanders watched and did nothing.

In these citations Galston misses two major points that characterize the Ukrainian war.  First, the assailants in both cases were weak, and not able to overwhelm the proximal agents able to aid the victims.  And second, neither attacker was prepared or capable of continuing his murderous rampage beyond committing their initial atrocities.  This is not the case with Russia invading Ukraine.  To the world Putin has made it clear that his intentions have been and will continue to be more than simply the return of a compliant Ukraine into the resurging Russian empire.

And echoing Biden’s peremptorily cowering announcement (joined by many Republicans), that the US will do nothing to risk nuclear war with Russia, seals an extremely dangerous future for all, while not reducing the eventual risk of nuclear war one whit.  For the decades during the cold war it was the prospect of MAD (mutually assured destruction) that reined in the USSR and kept us from a nuclear holocaust.  Had the Left’s ‘better Red than dead’ become the geo-strategic policy of the west and NATO to contain communism, we would all be fluent in Russian by now.  MAD worked only because Moscow knew we were willing to risk a nuclear war as we implemented policies (the ‘minor wars’ presaged by George Kennan) to stifle the spread of communism.  Without communicating such risk to the Politburo, MAD would have been toothless.

So, the bottom line for us today should be to counter Putin’s nuclear saber rattling with that of our own – ‘if you pull the nuclear trigger Vlad, we will incinerate you.’ – and bring back MAD. The time to stand up to a thug is early in the game before he and his star chamber become invested in the success of his previous threats – that should be our Plan A. The later we trade in our wish bone for a back bone, the more likely the thug will be willing to initiate a nuclear exchange.  Remember that Stalin blinked in 1948, Khrushchev in 1962, Brezhnev in 1981, Gorbachev in 1989.  Today again there is no endpoint in sight for retreating from such threats and conquests that does not involve eventual wholesale worldwide misery.

Anybody have a workable wishbone Plan B?

It is real that the Ukraine situation has caused a big riff in the Republican Party. No so with the Dems as they will go along with whatever Biden says at the moment. Interesting debates and opinions on the right. Haven’t seen such a split in a year or so. Anyway, another “one man’s opinion.”

Will a no-fly Zone prolong or shorter the war? I see a big stalemate as Ukraine can be easily resupplied from the border South and Southwest of Kiev. Russian hasn’t closed off the borders with NATO, so it will be like other entanglements that our enemies can resupply themselves as in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Does resupplying Ukraine prolong the war and cause more deaths? These are questions that are ballyhooed around. What is best for the USA? For Ukraine? For Russia?

I admit that Biden does appear to have been the perfect foreign policy storm for this country.
The crackhead kid shovels in millions from Ukraine and China at the same time as Ukraine becomes a sort of forward military base for the CIA. Ukraine, as opposed to being a large version of Denmark (as sold on TV currently) is really a mini-me Russia, oligarchs and all. The Bidens love them their corrupt states.
Biden bails from Afghanistan in an incredibly clumsy way, signaling to the other major powers that the US has lost it’s nerve. US allies are not pre-warned in any way so far as I can tell.
The DNC and Biden have prepositioned Russia as the 4th Reich for some time for domestic political purposes while wokifying the armed services at the same time.
US oil production has been knocked on it’s knees to please some Democratic voters. Dependency on foreigners increases.
I figure that Biden was sent by God to punish us or he’s just a sort of Chauncey Gardener character humming an aimless tune while the Republic crumbles.

So how would things be different in Ukraine if Trump would have been reelected? I mean Trump is famous for suggesting that we use nukes to diffuse hurricanes.
“Trump suggested nuking hurricanes to stop them from hitting U.S.
During one hurricane briefing at the White House, Trump said, “I got it. I got it. Why don’t we nuke them?” according to one source who was there. “They start forming off the coast of Africa, as they’re moving across the Atlantic, we drop a bomb inside the eye of the hurricane and it disrupts it. Why can’t we do that?”
There are several instances of Trump suggesting that.

Speaking of Ukraine, I hit some articles today showing that the Russians were using their fancy new aerospace devices. Iskander-M with decoys. Supersonic Kinzhal (Mach 10?) missiles.
Dunno if it’s just them throwing in the works, using Ukraine as a crash-test dummy for seeing how good the new stuff is, or Ukraine as airshow for selling the new stuff to the rest of the world.
Aside from the cost, there’s a lot to be said for tricky unmanned gadgets, but boy howdy the cost.
OTOH, I think you can buy 1000 of the less exotic surface-air missiles for the price of an Air Force F-35. I couldn’t tell you what some military planner’s spreadsheet is telling everyone is the current fact of the matter, but you just know there are a lot of arguments going on.

It looks like the ponytail of ignorance and the pillsbury dough boy are taking the same position on the laptop from hell –
CNN anchor Brian Stelter on Friday refused to walk back inaccurate claims he promoted on his program when he claimed Hunter Biden’s “laptop from hell” emails were “Russian disinformation.”
“Hey, just curious, when did I claim ‘Hunter Biden’s laptop emails were likely Russian propaganda’? Can you send me the quote?” he sent in a direct message on Twitter to this reporter, a reference to a Thursday Breitbart News article in which he was listed along with 14 others in establishment media for falsely suggesting the laptop was Russian propaganda and disinformation.
In response, Stelter was asked if he stood by the inaccurate claims he made on his show where he suggested the Hunter Biden emails may have been “made up” and could have been “Russian disinformation,” or if he was planning to retract the inaccurate comments.
Stelter was also provided with this video which clearly shows him using the phrase “Russian disinformation” to refer to the emails and suggesting they may have been “made up.”

Not even the ponytail of ignorance is willing to touch this one –
Perhaps the Progressives don’t realize how the environment is affected by war. Perhaps they don’t realize that the U.S. is the only country suffering significant economic impact by playing this silly Green New Deal game. Perhaps they don’t realize there is zero impact if we cut our production and someone else increases theirs by the same amount. To me, not unleashing our oil companies with the energy version of “Operation Warp Speed” is tantamount to treason.
To the Democrats who have hounded the NRA for years with the ubiquitous question, “Why do you need an AR-15 with a 30-round magazine?,” you now have your answer if you’ve been marveling at the performance of Ukrainian citizens. Think Putin wouldn’t appreciate a citizenry without the ability to defend their country?
Speaking of ability to defend their country, does anyone have any idea why Biden didn’t supply Ukraine with thousands of stinger and javelin missiles months ago?

    BAD ASS! –
Last night we sent the Ukrainian armed forces 24 Uragan missiles that were on their way here to fly over our cities,” says Yuri Golodov, the deputy commander of one of Ukraine’s Territorial Forces and a retired seaman from the Ukrainian Navy.
“We captured them intact, gave them to the Armed Forces of Ukraine at night and now the Ukrainian army has fired missiles back at them,” Golodov says.
Golodov plays a key role in repurposing military equipment abandoned by the Russian army – or captured from it.
He leads a team working at a military junkyard at an undisclosed location in Kyiv, repairing and repainting Russian military equipment for use by Ukrainian forces.
“Everything that we take away from the Russian army, we transfer to the armed forces of Ukraine,” he says.
Much of the equipment used by the Russian military is similar or the same to that used by Ukrainian soldiers, so they’re familiar with its operation.
“It dates back to the Soviet Union,” Golodov says. “It is quite reliable.”
“Everything is in working condition. It looks old weaponry, but actually if you use it correctly it will serve us for a long time,” he adds.
Golodov says his battalion is also responsible for capturing some of the equipment in the yard.
“We are special forces battalion of deep reconnaissance which works behind enemy lines,” he explains. “Our task is to destroy the provision of the Russian army – ammunition, fuel, food.”
According to Golodov, the vehicle was captured by his unit, when they attacked a Russian column.
“We shot at the first vehicle, and when it exploded the column stopped,” he says. “(Russian soldiers) ran away and we took their military equipment.”
According to Golodov and his men, this is a common occurrence on the battlefield.
“Russian soldiers are frightened, demoralized. They are afraid to part with each other, because they are being shot at from every bush,” he says.
He says some seem to be very young and inexperienced: “Most of them do not know or understand why they are here.”

    US reporting, surprisingly, is always:
. Concerned with personalities (Putin! Zelenskyy!! Trump!!!)
. Has an internal POV that is currently aligned with the War Party
. Loves drama and tales of derring-do
    . Is stuffed with op-ed
If you want to know purely what Ukrainian officialdom wants you to know, just stick to the Drudge Report.

I’m not sure what to make of it, except that it furthers my theory that both sides are insane, Ukraine simply being a mid-sized Russia in terms of economy and political system. Ukraine outlawed opposition political parties (11 of them?) and combined all media into a single government-controlled entity, so the needs of conflict appear to have pushed them along the Eastern Path a little quicker than in Russia.
Remember what Bismark said about the Balkans. I’d extend that somewhat north but I’m afraid that the folks who actually run the show here are having too much fun in their planning rooms.
