A Carefully Happy Thanksgiving – 2020

This year Jo Ann and I wish our readers a very special, carefully conducted and happy Thanksgiving. It has not been the best of years, and for the first time in several years we apprehensively face a very uncertain future for our beloved country and for our families, friends, and loved ones – all are targets of an historic collectivist assault on our health, wealth, and freedoms, an assault not witnessed since FDR’s New Deal over eighty years ago. That one required a tragic world war, with the participants of two (three?) iconic tyrants who became known to all Americans, to overcome and work out. What will be our saving grace this time?

In the meantime, the classic Norman Rockwell painting, celebrating a very American Thanksgiving, illustrates a gathering that in much of the country today is unconstitutionally illegal. A most egregious example we find in Oregon where such get togethers can land you fined and in jail, but a progressive state where it is now totally legal to shoot heroin or ingest any other mind-killing substance of choice. One such policy is intended to destroy our familial culture, the other to destroy the ability to be a productive and politically discriminating citizen. Compliance and dependency über alles.

My wish for you is to ‘just say NO!’, and join together as you will and have always done. You will know how to do it right.

We know how you feel. We have the VERY pretty Gavin Nuisance with the same “rules for thee, but not for me” attitude.
The turkey laws are almost as bad as the gun laws.. Still no permit, background check or permit required for the holiday bird.

Bob Evans (regional restaurant chain) did require ID for me to pick up the turkey & fixin’s, which I ordered a week prior. Only 6 to eat together this year, instead of the usual 15 or so.
Maybe this method can be used for voting next year – in March, call in a reservation to vote for (insert your favorite pol here) for the primary, then show ID to ‘pick-up’ your vote in person in April to officially record it.
Worked for me.

On the 5-4 Supreme Court decision to strike down Gov. Cuomo’s stifling of religion in New York:
The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) condemned the decision and warned it could “undermine New York’s efforts to curb the pandemic.”
On the other hand, the other ACLU (American Chilled Liberties Union) stated that they were OK with the decision, since they are all-in for limiting the liberty of dictatorial politicians.

Caroline and I are in Seattle enjoying a small family gathering with our son and daughter-in-law. We managed a meal out at Sawyers in the Ballard District. Ballard is a depressing sight with so many store fronts and venues boarded up (complete with left wing graffiti sprayed all over). Some store fronts simply empty. Lots of signs out in front of homes and businesses proclaiming an undying allegiance to all that is currently in moral vogue. The funniest (and very popular) statement is: “science is real!”. OK.
One store had a sign listing a litany of necessary personal attributes (#6 – tolerance) and then declaring: “if you don’t agree, then don’t come in”. Very tolerant.
None of which is stopping our good cheer and ability to feel very grateful for what we have.

Rejecting as is my norm the Newsom noise, I am nonetheless alone at home. Dinner will be baked chicken and mashed taters. Wife is over the hill at her son’s home, with grandkids, for a small gathering, my son is traveling with his bride in AZ at the moment, on way to Zion National Park for a short stay,
I was originally planning to be with my wife but the spiking CoV numbers everywhere (but especially here and in Reno) spooked me. If there were no prospect of a vaccine as far as the eye can see, I’d have gone, but damned if I want to be one of the last to be intubated for the Wuhan SARS just for a dinner with family, traditional though it is.

Unfortunately, Roberts seems to be a wire-walker, leaning toward the left, without a 40-pound balance bar to keep him steady. I think that the Supreme Court needs a 7-2 conservative edge to ensure 5-4 decisions.

A little historical perspective and the final word on Thanksgiving –
The theme of Crocker’s sermon is the revival of American greatness. It takes as its starting point Philippians 4:6: “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God.” In other words, be bold when you speak to God, when you reach out to God for your needs, because you are special to him. You are deserving of his love. Do not meekly accept what the world offers but courageously appeal to God.
For Crocker, this was not just a personal admonition—although it was certainly that. It was also teaching for the United States, which she believed had been bestowed with divine favor. What was needed was a return to faith in divinely ordained American greatness, an embrace of American exceptionalism, and a rejection of those who would say all we can do is manage our decline. We needed to replace our fear and anxiety with thanks, prayer, and confidence that We the People of the United States were deserving of the love of God.
