This gives me a good idea for a business. It’ll be a sort of REIT except we’ll invest in lawyers and the Advocacy Industrial Complex. We’ll hire poor people (and screen them for the most photo-worthy), scout for empty dwellings, move ’em in, swing in the lawyers and protestors to hang onto the thing, turn it into a rental in a couple of years. Once it’s a rental, use Russian private security to evict people if needed.
Accept the new lawless society. Prosper in the new lawless society.
This could work. Organized on the bigly scale, some serious dosh could be made.

Iran Retaliated, Sort Of: So Now What? “Trump’s attitude seems to be that if the Mullahs want peace, they can have it. If they don’t, he’ll do to the next guy what he did to Suleimani. If last night’s ‘retaliation’ is anything to go by, Tehran seems to be very receptive to Trump all of a sudden. Iran reportedly alerted both Baghdad and Washington, quietly, that an attack was imminent, and then made sure the missiles were badly targeted. Hence, zero casualties. The harmless explosions were mostly for domestic propaganda purposes, so the Mullahs have something to show the people on TV and claim to have killed a jillion infidels with their mighty missiles or whatever. But the whole world knows exactly what they just saw: Tehran backing down after Trump ordered the death of their terror mastermind.”

Here comes the Occupy Wall Street crowd again…
In the December issue of Harper’s, Wes Enzinna shares his preposterous personal odyssey under the headline “Down and Out in Silicon Valley.” Housing is indeed absurdly expensive in the Bay Area, for reasons that are largely political rather than organic, but Enzinna’s story, colorful as it is (he took up residence in a shack with no plumbing), tells us nothing useful about that. Early in his career, Enzinna moved to work “at an investigative reporting magazine in San Francisco,” by which I assume he is politely indicating Mother Jones, the investigative-reporting magazine in San Francisco where his work has appeared. “My situation,” he writes, “was evidence of how distorted the Bay Area housing market had become, the brutality inflicted upon the poor now trickling up to everyone but the super-rich.
His situation was no such thing.
For personal reasons, he had decided to keep paying rent and residential bills on an apartment in New York City, which, like San Francisco and environs, is very expensive. Enzinna is a 2010 graduate of the graduate journalism program at Berkeley, and his problem is that while working as an early-career magazine journalist he could not afford to rent homes in New York City and the Bay Area simultaneously.

Dems’ chickens come home to roost in lack of Soleimani consultation.
“A furious Speaker Nancy Pelosi bitterly complained that “this action was taken without the consultation of the Congress.”

Our Elites Are Steering Us Towards Civil War
They are as clueless as the ancien régime
“The peaceful transfer of power that accompanies a free election is only possible on the basis of civic friendship and trust; each side must believe that, win or lose, the rights of the minority will be protected by those who take power. On both sides today, that trust seems to be slipping. While most Americans acknowledge the fact that America is deeply divided, many of our leaders remain in denial about the potential result of this growing, fundamental distrust. We are confronting again the dire situation New Birth describes prior to the Civil War: “both parties [see] the contest as a zero-sum enterprise in which the advantages of one side [are] losses to the other. From this viewpoint, ballots can never really substitute for bullets.” Not for the first time in our nation’s history, if this state of affairs continues force may be embraced as the only alternative when reason fails. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. We must fervently hope that things will change before they become violent. But if the clueless attitudes of our sclerotic elite remain unaltered, it is not hard to see what’s on the horizon.“

Will the NRA start getting damage judgments against the liberal cities that tried to destroy it? –
Not long ago, progressive state and local officials nationwide were vowing to take down the hated National Rifle Association by targeting its pocketbook. When city authorities in Los Angeles and San Francisco gave that idea a try, they were following the lead of Governor Andrew Cuomo, who had unleashed New York financial regulators to go after the gun-rights organization’s access to insurance and banking services.
Now all three are facing a reckoning in court, based not on the Second Amendment but on the First. Without needing to even consider the issue of gun rights, federal courts are recognizing that boycotts enforced by government power can menace free speech and free association.
The amusing part is that the public officials themselves are helping to provide the basis for these rulings by tweeting and speechifying about how much damage they intend to do the NRA.
One reason the California disputes went so well for the NRA is that the officials just couldn’t help grandstanding at every turn in search of followers’ applause. That’s how O’Farrell, in Los Angeles, helped tweet his side of the case right out of court. But Cuomo, while he’s been more circumspect, has not covered himself as thoroughly as he might have. “If I could have put the NRA out of business, I would have done it 20 years ago,” he declared in response to one legal development.
Tell us more, Governor.

Five Years Later, We Still Haven’t Learned from the Charlie Hebdo Massacre
“For a brief moment after attack, the free world rallied around Charlie Hebdo. “Je suis Charlie” became a global rallying cry. The massive march through the streets of Paris that followed included virtually every major world leader, including those hypocrites who are happy to clamp down on free expression in their own nations. One leader conspicuously, and embarrassingly, absent from the proceedings was the president of the United States, Barack Obama. He sent the U.S. ambassador to France instead.
It’s worth remembering some of the Left’s passive-aggressive victim-blaming after the second attack. “Shooting people is wrong,” wrote The Daily Beast’s Arthur Chu, a guy who puts quotation marks around “free speech” when the thoughts being expressed offend his sensibilities. But, he warned, do not martyr the “trolling” satirists of Charlie Hebdo, and do not act in a way that “valorizes free speech for its own sake.” The latter is an argument we hear all the time today.
Taking a slightly different tack than Chu, Max Fisher at Vox lamented that these white French people were punching down at powerless brown people. Fisher now works at the New York Times, a publication that has no compunction punching down when it comes to American Christians. If an anti-abortion extremist shot up a major newspaper, would anyone argue that “the shooting was terrible, but we really should start thinking about pulling our rhetorical punches when it comes Evangelical conservatives or pro-lifers?” Doubtful.
Criticism of Islam is a completely legitimate form of political speech, as is criticism of Catholicism and Mormonism and Judaism and Scientology, all of which Charlie Hebdo has also satirized. We have no responsibility to “respect” anyone’s ideas about the world, or the afterworld, nor do we have any right to expect to live in a world free of offense. The argument that a subset of people — in this case Muslims — should be afforded special protections from open discourse is itself a bigoted way of saying you don’t believe Muslims can live peacefully in the free world…….
—
In any event, the trial of the terrorists who help facilitate the Charlie Hebdo massacre began this week. Only five of the 24 jihadists who helped plan the attack will be appearing in court. The other 19 suspects, most of them dead, had long ago left to fight in Iraq and Syria with ISIS. They were probably really mad about the tone of French political cartoons.
In the meantime, Charlie Hebdo should remind us that giving a bunch of religious extremists or government bureaucrats veto power over our speech is a terrible idea. It does nothing to make us safer. It only makes us less free.“

HOT AIR ON ENERGY
“Ask a climatista who is the leader in climate action in Europe and you’re likely to get a word salad about Germany’s energiewende (“energy revolution”), which has seen the Fourth Reich spend something like $1 trillion Euros on “green” energy over the last 25 years. Worth mentioning in passing that when I visited Germany on an energy junket as a guest of the German government in 2008, every expert we met said that Germany couldn’t possibly meet its 2020 or 2030 greenhouse gas targets unless they kept their nuclear power, which the Green Party had demanded be phased out as a condition for joining the coalition government back then. And then came the Fukushima in 2011, and Germany’s very worst ever Chancellor-Without-a-Mustache decided to phrase out nuclear power even faster, apparently fearful of tsunamis from the Rhine River or something.”

GERMANY’S GREEN ENERGY FACEPLANT
No sooner do I post an item yesterday about Germany’s pathetic energiewende than the thesis is confirmed today in, of all places, the New York Times!
“German journalist and Times op-ed contributor Jochen Bittner today writes of “The Tragedy of Germany’s Energy Experiment,” where these familiar-sounding highlights appear:“…….
“The epidemiology behind the claims of large health effects from conventional air pollution is likely shakier than we are usually told, but it is still notable that even the slowest of learners among the environmental left are actually starting to recognize that real life involves tradeoffs. I never thought I’d live long enough to see any environmentalists express second thoughts publicly about their previous reflexive anti-nuclear position, but here we are.”

U.S. officials confident Iran shot down passenger jet
U.S. officials are confident Iran shot down a Ukrainian jetliner in the hours after the Iranian missile attack on U.S. targets earlier this week, CBS News has learned.
U.S. intelligence picked up signals of the radar being turned on and satellite detected infrared blips of two missile launches, probably SA-15s, followed shortly by another infrared blip of an explosion.
The current thinking is the plane, Ukraine International Flight 752, was mistakenly targeted, CBS News’ Kris Van Cleave reports.
President Trump said Thursday it could have been a mistake.
Federal officials were briefed on this intelligence Thursday morning. A source who was in the briefing said it appears missile components were found near the crash site, Van Cleave reports.

Blew it for sure –
The gaping hole in this argument, and the reason Democrats are losing the debate, is that they’ve already claimed to have conclusive evidence of Trump’s wrongdoing. They claimed they had proof of bribery, but they didn’t include it in the impeachment articles. They claimed to have proof in the Mueller report that Trump obstructed justice, yet it’s not in the article of impeachments either. Rubin herself has alleged, dozens of times, that we already have definitive proof Trump has committed an impeachable offense.
In truth, if the House had made a persuasive case, there would be public pressure on Republicans to act in a different manner. That the House did not is the only reason Pelosi embraced John Dean’s silly idea — which has drastically backfired.

For the record: “This is a parody of impeachment. House Democrats said they had to rush to vote before Christmas because President Trump poses a clear and present danger, but now the urgency is gone. The House didn’t subpoena John Bolton, the former national security adviser, but now the Senate must call him or the trial won’t be fair. The House refused to call witnesses requested by the GOP minority, but now the Senate GOP majority is supposed to heed every request by the Democratic minority.” —The Wall Street Journal
Non compos mentis I: “We should have a foreign policy that is focused on climate change and not endless wars.” —Ben Rhodes
Non compos mentis II: “We should not be allowing plastic. And what we should do is phasing [sic] it out.” —Joe Biden
Grand delusions: “What scares me is every time you go back to the scientists, they tell you two things: It’s worse than we thought, and we have less time. That means we’ve got to be willing to do things, for example, like regulation. By 2028, no new buildings, no new houses, without a zero carbon footprint.” —Sen. Elizabeth Warren
The BIG Lie: “I believe that President Obama had a strategy … that would prevent Iran from becoming nuclear. There weren’t these incidents during the Obama administration. We didn’t have protests against our embassies, the killing of American contractors. Americans were safe at that time.” —Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) (As Charlie Kirk put it, “4 years ago Iran captured US Troops, held them captive, and made them pose for humiliating photos. John Kerry ‘thanked’ Iran for how our troops were treated. Barack Obama sent them $1.7 billion in cash just weeks later.” And that’s not to mention four dead Americans, including a U.S. ambassador, at our consulate in Benghazi.)
Braying jackass: “We live in a time where Republicans pretty much right now the party of hypocrisy. It’s not the old Republican Party, the party of principles, the party of values, the party of Max Boot … where character counts. It’s a party of hypocrisy.” —CNN’s Don Lemon
And last… “[Democrats] mourn Soleimani more than they mourn [with] our Gold Star families who are the ones who suffered under Soleimani.” —Rep. Doug Collins

Talking about Democrat lies. This is a question for PaulE et al. Did Pelosi lie when she said before Christmas that the impeachment had to be rushed through because Trump posed a clear and present danger to the Republic that was becoming more imminent every day? Was this a big lie, little lie, political posturing, gratuitous bullshit, or what? Since the libs here are counting Trump’s ‘lies’ into the tens of thousands, maybe they could tell us what was this mouthful from Pelosi.

‘Poll Finds Most People Would Rather Be Annihilated By Giant Tidal Wave Than Continue To Be Lectured By Climate Change Activists,” the Babylon Bee reported in December, adding in an attached news story that one man’s response to hearing “just 30 seconds of a Greta Thunberg lecture” was to scrawl on the survey form, “Come, sweet death.”
The Bee was, as usual, ahead of the pack, but these days it’s becoming common for even left-leaning comics to mock Thunberg. “Iconic”? “Courageous”? Nah. Just tiresome. Far from being a visionary difference-maker who put it all on the line for her righteous cause, Thunberg is increasingly being derided as just another hyperemotional, tantrum-prone, attention-seeking teen brat.
Joan of Arc became Veruca Salt.
Ricky Gervais (a lifelong lefty) saw the opportunity at the Golden Globes Sunday when he smacked the audience and the tiny Nordic doom-monger with a classic double punchline: “You know nothing about the real world,” he told a ballroom full of celebrities. “Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.” BBC Scotland ran a skit in which comics playing Thunberg’s parents talk about all of the fun they’ve been having while she’s been away and blanch when she returns. When the BBC starts making fun of Greta Thunberg, it’s like L’Osservatore Romano satirizing the pope.
Meanwhile, Thunberg has become shorthand for environmentally based vapidity, which becomes all the funnier the more clueless earnestness with which it is delivered. After fashion designer Stella McCartney presented Joaquin Phoenix as the new world champion of climate-change activism for committing to (top this!) wearing only one tuxedo during Hollywood awards season, the deluge of mockery that followed on Twitter included lots of collateral comic damage to Thunberg. Personal favorite: the British man who replied, “f*** me. I wore the same undercrackers for over a month before I got some new ones for crimbo [Christmas]. I’m basically a sexy, bald, bloody Greta Thunberg.”
On The Last Leg, a British chat show, comic Rosie Jones (who has cerebral palsy and is no one’s idea of a bully) made a dirty joke at Thunberg’s expense on New Year’s Eve, and another standup, Josh Widdicombe, called Thunberg “the first person to perfect the art of bunking school.” Days later, Dave Chappelle joked about Thunberg in a San Francisco set. I don’t know what Chappelle said, but a San Francisco Chronicle writer who declined to quote the remark instead wrote, “Let’s just say the 17-year-old activist irks him, to put it mildly, rather than going into detail about Chappelle’s joke involving R. Kelly and [Thunberg].” Do tell.

from DonB’s article:
“The CNN analyst wasn’t the only journalist who expressed that sentiment. NBC News correspondent Heidi Przybyla said that the plane crash was “at minimum, related to crossfire.” The Atlantic staff writer Anne Applebaum similarly wrote that Ukraine was “sucked in to a geopolitical conflict created by others” and that plane was caught “in the crossfire.””
Ya know, a more cynical person than me might say that they probably are all on the same private mailing list and picked up on some thought leader that steered the hivemind. As far as the press is concerned, it ain’t too different than merely getting marching orders from KAOS.
Of course, by the time the crack news team reaches out and blearily tears a sheet off the teletype it’s probably too late. On the other hand, it’s always 4:20 somewhere.
