[On the face of it I am not in favor of withdrawing US troops from Syria, especially viz the Kurds.  My own long-stated Rebane Doctrine is that the US must continue its role as the world's white hat policeman (hegemon) using responses and methods that will evolve with needs and time.  But before we continue hyper-ventilating on the withdrawal, can someone cite the exact parameters of Trump's withdrawal announcement – e.g. is it more than pulling a few tens of troops back from the 20-mile buffer zone?  gjr]

Turkey fires its first shots: Ankara bombs Kurdish supply route in preparation for invasion to create a ‘peace corridor’ along its border on day after Trump pulls US troops from the area, despite claiming ‘we haven’t abandoned the Kurds’

The Trump administration’s trade policies are not raising prices of goods for U.S. consumers. And business margins are improving, suggesting that some of the adjustment pains from moving supply-chains out of China are in the rearview mirror.
Prices for goods in the U.S. fell by four-tenths of a percentage point in September, after following a half percentage point in August, three months after tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports rose from 10 percent to 25 percent, the Labor Department said Tuesday. Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, prices for goods were down in the month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Not even the President can cite the parameters of US troop withdrawal, obviously, since he did not coordinate his announcement with Congress, the JCS, State, Defense, or CENTCOM.
I short, the President just blurted it out and now all of the institutional entities that normally plan, consider ramifications, provide advise about, and implement such actions are stuck catching up with the whim of der Führer.
This is what happens when a nation gradually slips under the control of the Führerprinzip. It’s also what happens when stupid, misguided, or like minded people go along with authoritarian anti-American governance and empower a Führer.

    Well put Steve,
I’ve spent the morning researching and looking for the parameters of our emergency troop withdrawal. It seems to be something like, “The Turks are coming, get out the way.” This is what happens when foreign “policy” is a fluid construct bouncing around inside the head of a single aged man; and that man is completely incapable of articulating said policy. Kind of scary. His finger is on the button.

I believe that Walt’s conventional position is the most likely….but….
Let’s be clear, most elected Republicans can’t stand Trump. He is a thrice married, pussy grabbing, New York, amoral, self serving, corrupt, criminal who is perverting what the Republican party has stood for for the last 50 years.
Sure there a several brainwashed mouthpieces..Meadows, Jordan, Nunes, et al…but the rank and file elected merely tolerate Trump to hold on to power.
As soon as 60% of Americans support removal from office they will abandon him to try to save their own skin…the question is solely, is there enough to get to that 60%

That is beside the point. What is happening is classic rope a dope where Trump is being kept off balance and having to be on the defensive side of the argument. He hates that. There is little doubt that, technically, he will not be removed, but with the numbers where they are, few Pubbers are going to stick their political necks out to support his positions. Trump is a proven quitter and when people don’t love hm as much as he thinks he deserves, I can see him simply walking away from the job with some face-saving sour grapes excuse. Like Todd, it’s never his fault. Just ask him.

But his usual diatribe about the “Führerprinzip” is also off the wall and without supporting evidence. Whether we agree with Trump’s process or not, the Constitution allows him to do what he’s doing, the rest is ongoing progressive narrative.

    Steve,
I remember your trip to 北京. I landed in Bejing this afternoon and will stay until the end of the week. This is my second trip to mainland China (Shanghai in November 2018). And Shannon and I visited Hong Kong in March. China fascinates me. Being here for the People’s Republic #70 has been a hassle from a traveling standpoint (more traffic jams and crowds than usual) but a rich and unique learning experience.
We’ve been fortunate to have traveled a lot (Mexico, Canada, Caribbean, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, South America). But until we visited Tokyo in November 2015, we hadn’t been to Asia much. The dynamics of the region and its relationship with the U.S. become much clearer when viewed firsthand. There is much more to it than the “us” versus “them” narrative we are exposed too. And it becomes clear how Trump and Navarro are not them best “team” for “us.”
I lived in the International House (of Pancakes?) when I went to Cal in 1976-81 — during the Iranian hostage crisis, no less. I have made lifetime friends with foreign students I met at Cal, including ones from Asia. It’s was an important educational experience. We have exposed our son to a lot of world travel too. “The State of Jefferson” is God’s gift to nature but not the best place to form a world view.
BTW, Shannon and Mitchell are touring out-of-state colleges this week, including a stop in Chicago (my alma mater Northwestern and University of Chicago). We included Rice U. in Houston into the mix, and he liked it (a strong engineering program). Also going East.
Our families are in different directions this week. Thank goodness for Jackie, our dog sitter. Ha! Exciting times.

    Exciting times indeed…….

While schiff for brains and botox Nancy are doing a kabuki dance things get worse for team 0 –
However, based on what he has been finding, Durham has expanded his investigation adding agents and resources, the senior administration officials said. The timeline has grown from the beginning of the probe through the election and now has included a post-election timeline through the spring of 2017, up to when Robert Mueller was named special counsel.
Attorney General Bill Barr and Durham traveled to Italy recently to talk to law enforcement officials there about the probe and have also had conversations with officials in the U.K. and Australia about the investigation, according to multiple sources familiar with the meetings.
Sol Wisenberg says whistleblower complaint is effort to discredit John Durham’s investigation
Certain segments of the intelligence community and the Democratic Party are ‘scared to death’ of what U.S. Attorney John Durham will find, says Fox News contributor Sol Wisenberg, former deputy independent counsel.
Barr assigned Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, back in May to conduct the inquiry into alleged misconduct and improper surveillance of the Trump campaign in 2016, as well as whether Democrats were the ones who’d improperly colluded with foreign actors.
The attorney “is gathering information from numerous sources, including a number of foreign countries. At Attorney General Barr’s request, the president has contacted other countries to ask them to introduce the attorney general and Mr. Durham to appropriate officials,” Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said last month.
Durham, known as a “hard-charging, bulldog” prosecutor, according to a source, has been focusing on the use and assignments of FBI informants, as well as alleged improper issuance of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants. Durham was asked to help Barr to “ensure that intelligence collection activities by the U.S. government related to the Trump 2016 presidential campaign were lawful and appropriate.”

You are a very gullible and sadly mistaken man to believe Nancy does anything haphazardly. Every day public support for impeachment grows stronger, and The Donald just keeps digging his hole deeper with his tweets and stonewalling. Nancy is holding impeachment just out of reach like a carrot on a string. She is a master at this. When she feels the public furor has reached a crescendo, she’ll let the guillotine fly. This is not about kicking Trump out of office, it about building public perception and the next election. Every minute of this is premeditated and choreographed.

Afternoon, gents. Boy, VDH is on a typing terror lately. These great articles seem to fly off his fingertips by the hour.
‘Groundbreaking’ disclosures fall apart, hoaxes are exposed, the media are discredited, over and over and over again.
What do the Kavanaugh hearings, Jussie Smollett, the Covington kids, the Mueller investigation, and now the Trump phone call all have in common?
“Staged melodrama, media collusion hysteria, progressive demands that justice be served immediately, promises of walls-are-closing-in blockbuster revelations from new witnesses, supposed surprise revelatory documents, fusions between Democratic politicians and Washington bureaucrats — and then bust, nada, and teeth-gnashing as the truth catches up to various rumor-mongers.
“The disgraced purveyors of lies — a Christine Blasey Ford, Michael Avenatti, Nathan Phillips, Jussie Smollet, Adam Schiff — for a time go mute, content with progressives’ praise that they lied for a moral cause and almost pulled it off.
“The particular narrative is not all that important, at least compared with a general overriding theme: We are in a virtual civil war, and the Left believes that it can win over the hearts and minds of 20 to 30 percent of the swing voters in the United States with therapeutic tales of racism, sexism, unearned white privilege, and right-wing greed and selfishness, and also by destroying the elected president. Particular events in the news are warped and twisted, to the degree that they can be, to serve that narrative — on the principle that the superior moral end of ensuring a radical equality of result more than justifies the often tawdry and dishonest means to achieve it…………………….
“When it is all over, there are no apologies and no contriteness, just a shrug. After all, if it wasn’t true, it could have been, or it reflected a higher moral truth, and lying for noble ends justifies the means. In fact, those who call out the rumor-mongers, sanctimonious scolds, and political hacks are usually themselves damned as racists, homophobes, Stalinists, Trump robots, conspiracy theorists, or any such slur deemed useful in projectionist fashion to deflect their own culpability.
“So here we are, on the eve of impeaching a president on the basis of disgruntled White House staffers, whose rumors in secondhand and thirdhand fashion were passed on to a “whistleblower” who worked hand in hand with partisan lawyers and Adam Schiff to circumvent the normal whistleblower protocols and smear a president.
“And we will all shrug and grow quiet — at least until the next Blasey Ford, Michael Avenatti, Jussie Smollett, Nathan Philipps, dream-team, all-star star chamber, James Comey, or “anonymous” crusading “whistleblower” comes forth to seek notoriety and do his yeoman’s work to rid the country of Trump and all his odious henchmen.
“Meanwhile, they have no idea of the wreckage they have inflicted on the intelligence agencies, the media, the Democratic party, themselves, and the country — or much less why a growing number of Americans are sick of them all.”

The juggernaut of a campaign has raised the most money ever –
Now, Trump has a roaring reelection apparatus. There are six main committees working to secure his second term, including the official campaign, the Republican National Committee and a super PAC. Together, they have already raised over $736 million – more than any previous presidential candidate at this point in the campaign.
Trump is armed with a bigger reelection operation than his predecessors had at this stage in their campaigns.
By this point in 2011, the official committees working toward President Barack Obama’s second term had raised at least $390 million – a little over half of what Trump has now, campaign filings show.
During the 2016 campaign, one way Trump saved money was by leveraging his celebrity, bombast and larger-than-life personality to attract coverage in the media.
“He was on TV all the time,” said Alex Conant, GOP strategist and senior adviser to Rubio’s 2016 campaign. It “turned out to be a brilliant strategy, and one that doesn’t require much campaign infrastructure – just a cellphone and proximity to a TV camera.”
Trump still enjoys those advantages. But he now has internal polling, a system to test messages on Facebook to figure out what ads resonate most with voters and a rapid-response team tasked with mounting a public relations offensive at a moment’s notice.
