Although an overstatement, I think that neatly encapsulates a sort of description.
‘States’ are something of a top down sort of thing, while ‘nations’ are bottom up.
I’m still attracted to the idea of differing foundation myths:
Right: Honest Abe, G. Washington’s cherry tree, C. Columbus, the western frontier, ‘murica, all that stuff you used to see in movies.
Left: Slavery, Hitler, colonialism, dead Indians.
Bring up Columbus to a ‘lefty’ and all you get is a litany of the evils of Europeans (even though they benefited directly). It’s like listening to vegetarians loudly announce their food preferences to the world.

Personally, I think it’s possible to build a strong economy based on a small elite and favelas, especially with increased automation. Does it become a better place to live? Maybe not.

Californians are fleeing in droves and the empty space backfilled by freeloaders. Look at the Newsome budget and dig into it to see where the democrat’s priorities rest. And the SacBee had a couple of articles on infrastructure today. One was the Department of Water Resources in charge of the Oroville Dam fiasco is exposed for a real typical example of their lack of brains. They hired a deaf woman to drive a truck down the spillway dragging chains to see if they could hear empty spaces under the spillway. Yje only empty space I could see was the space between their ears. The other was concrete chunks are falling on the roadway on a Bay area bridge.
