Today is Veterans’ Day, a national holiday with a bit of a convoluted history (here).  It started out as Armistice Day to honor those who served and fell in WW1.  Then through a series of congressional acts starting in 1954 it became a day to honor all veterans who served in the nation’s armed forces, and its observance was returned to 11 November.  Memorial Day is reserved, as it should be, for those who gave their “last full measure of devotion” to America.

My thoughts on this day also turn to how our military is now constituted as an ‘all-volunteer’ fighting force.  The bar to get into the services has been significantly raised so that many young men and women who might benefit from the experience will not qualify.   I side with those who believe that in a broadly franchised liberal democratic republic everyone who is able to contribute to the forceful defense of our nation should be required to man the ramparts – in short, I would like to see a new version of the draft returned, similar to the one that provided millions of our young, especially the men, with an irreplaceable coming-of-age institution.  Yes, it may be a less efficient way to defend our country, but having an all-volunteer professional military in its stead also comes with dangers known and unknown.

Last night’s Republican debate sponsored by Fox Business News and the WSJ set a new standard for how such events should be conducted.  The moderators – Neil Cavuto, Maria Bartiromo, Gerard Baker – showed everyone how professionals can and should draw out the substantive policies, beliefs, and backgrounds of the candidates.  The bookend to this debate was the last one by CNBC where the obviously leftwing moderators couldn’t outdo each other in their attempt to discredit the whole Republican field with questions like, ‘Senator A, in his recent campaign ad Mr B calls you an asshole, how do you respond to that?’  From the latest debate that gave ample time for candidates to speak, we learned the candidates’ positions on important issues focusing on the economy and the nation’s foreign policy.  This morning on countless blogs and media outlets you can read how these positions compare/contrast, and how well thought out they are at this stage of the campaign.  We will welcome more of this kind of debates.

IMHO progressives are bad news for the country in whatever form they express themselves.  The latest, of course, are the insane student demonstrations on our college and university campuses.  These young people and their useless professors are functional idiots who have to a large degree changed our centers for learning and new ideas into Orwellian enclaves where allowable thought and speech are today dictated by people who really should apply for tuition refunds because their schools failed to teach them anything, even in the lightweight majors they have attempted to study.  The Univ of Missouri situation has become the most recent posterchild of how students from union K-12 schools are now participating in the destruction of our institutions of higher education.  And don’t get me wrong, their politically correct and cowardly administrators and teachers are aiding and abetting the ongoing travesty.  We have to remember how many generations have been intellectually polluted since the Great Society vulture spread its wings over academe.  You can read a brief but insightful summary of these goings on in ‘Bonfire of the Academy’.

[Later]  And as more inquiry is devoted to the U of M affair, it appears that no one can provide any evidence for all the alleged race-based infractions that got the campus light thinkers agitated.  It turns out that even the report of the football team walking out en masse is wrong, only a few players refused to play if the resignation demands were not met.

Especially on this Veterans’ Day, this video is worth watching.  (H/T to reader)

[14nov15 update]  Friday the thirteenth in Paris – bad omen.  ISIS, Obama’s JV team of terrorists, is operating freely on three continents, and most freely in western countries with liberal democratic societies.  Yesterday’s attacks in the City of Lights is a definite game changer, and will also affect attitudes about the hordes of illegal Muslim migrants now swarming across Europe’s borders.  My irritation continues with the know-nothing journalists who still continue to call this the ‘war on terror’ of which it is nothing of the kind – as before, WW2 was not a ‘war on the mechanized division’.  For a broader view about the portents for Europe and perhaps America, I direct your attention to this Stratfor report – ‘What to Expect After the Nov. 13 Paris Attacks’.

We owe our freedom to American Vets, thank you all. When diplomacy does not work or needs to be backed up, who is there? It is America’s vet’s! I was just reading a speech that Francis Scott Key, Maryland Militia Member in the 1812 war and Star Spangled Banner author made on July 4th 1831. He had much praise for our veterans and how much our citizens owe them. He said “We who inherit freedom may value it less than men who won it.” It was 16 years after the end of the war and he warned about becoming “listless and luxurious in times of ease and security”. How true this all still is today! Thanks again Vets!!!

I’ve yet to see any comments here (other than yours) about the debate. Has everybody seen enough to make up their minds, or did they just not watch? (I live in Suddenlink cable territory–roughly Alta Sierra to Auburn–and it doesn’t carry Fox Business News.)
I’ve long thought we should have universal service along the lines of what Israel does. And there should be few exemptions–if you’re not in jail or prison, missing a limb, or certifiably insane, you should serve in some capacity.
I’d had already graduated from college by the time I was drafted, so the experience did little to shape me. But I saw a significant change in a lot of the people I served with, particularly poor Southern boys whose best option was the military when they got out of high school.
The experience would also be beneficial to people who are later elected to Congress and have to decide whether to send our troops into harm’s way.

What I don’t understand is how the neocons plan to get working class white people to fight the next war they have planned?

My suspicion is: They won’t. The results shall be … interesting.
One prediction: I expect sometime within the next decade, there will be a sudden revival of interest in bringing back the draft — among both the left and right. The globalist right will be drooling at the prospect of more cannon fodder for their wars; the multicultural left will start to realize the possibilities inherent in a widespread forced compliance to their social agenda, especially once they understand how unpopular their ideas are when people are given a choice.

I too think universal service might just be the right thing in America. I agree with GeorgB.
The debate was very well run and the moderators were professional and calm. The CNBC putz’s kept shouting at the candidates and were so irritating I wanted to zap their sorry asses with electricity. LOL!
I think Kasich and Bush crossed a line though on immigration. The base, and I suspect many working people in the trades and many other jobs are not working because illegals work for less. I saw this in home construction last decade. So the point is not a racist one but an economic one. Do we want lawbreakers to come steal the jobs? I am sad that illegals have broken the law but they need to go home and let Americans get back to work. Why Kasich, Bush and all the democrats fight for the illegals while Americas are out of work caused by illegals is something I don’t get.
Overall the R’s show a lot of smarts for the economy. Especially the millions of regulations never voted on by our representatives. Those regulations placed into the Federal Register need to be stopped. Also, the SCOTUS saying they agree CO2 is a pollutant , upholding a EPA regulation was the stupidest thing since John Roberts making law from the bench I have seen We are governed by stupid people, just like Trump says.

GeorgeB 349jpm – I too was a college graduate when I went on active duty. But I still remember the years I trained and was in the military as my coming-of-age period. Looking back, I would not have changed it for anything. But I do understand that it didn’t have to be that for everyone who served, and there’s no blame or shame in that.

So our side of the issue has the Democratic Senior US Senator, the very popular and well funded Democrat Governor and now the Dem. Leader of the State Senate. Regarding the campus unrest, let’s remember 2016 is the 50th anniversary of a particular period of unrest in China.
What we have on our campuses is a Multicultural Revolution, only this time led by the (thankfully unarmed) children of the bourgeoisie against left-liberal college administrations because they aren’t panderingly left-liberal enough to suit the kids who don’t want to be challenged, they want assurances they won’t have to confront anyone who disagrees with them.

One of the biggest kept secrets (at least from our leftwing) is the human toll of China’s Cultural Revolution (circa 1970). When you get to talk to an educated Chinese national in private, the tallied numbers of the dead fall in the 100-120M range. And that was just one of several Great Leaps and other internal ‘revolutions’ that was all kept out of our lamestream. Mao puts Stalin and Hitler into a distant JV category.
The campus numbnuts with their pathological ideologies are prime candidates for replicating the rampages of the Red Guards. All they need is a government that looks the other way and gives them a nod to proceed on their Multikulti Revolution (h/t Gregory). Ferguson was a primer.

After the Turkish worker influx of the 1990s – most of whom went back to Turkey – the net benefit of the successive waves of Muslim influx became immeasurable. Today Team Merkel entertains no doubt that Germany’s grudging acceptance of more economic migrants from Islam is a drain on the nation, and the political cost of mollifying its Left and not awakening memories of a racist past is very great and growing larger by the day.
In the meantime the ignorance of our own journalists in reporting on the great migration is visible every night. As the latest, I offer Greg Palkot of Fox News who showed Hungary and neighboring countries erecting barbed wire fences on their southern border while grimly wondering whether they were constructing new Berlin Walls. The man has no idea what the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain was and from what side was it intended to deny passage.
