“Two things are infinite; the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.”  “The difference between genius and stupidity is that there is a limit to genius.”  Albert Einstein

George Rebane

Unfortunately, common sense is far from being common.

The Republicans are headed to a well-deserved shellacking,  The country will now bear the brunt of a fundamental transformation to an autocratic collectivism that our new Democrats – progressive Marxists, socialist, and communists – will now seek to inflict upon us.  In the final analysis history has shown that such people are formally stupid.

A theory of stupidity was formulated by the noted German theologian and anti-Nazi resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer outlined in a letter written from a Nazi prison cell in 1943 (published in Letters and Papers from Prison).  And his work is summarized in this YouTube video.

Economic historian Carlo Cipolla also gained worldwide notoriety 50 years ago by studying stupidity and documenting his findings in The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity (1976).  You can get a good summary of his findings from another short YouTube video.  The main findings of both men are congruent, and summarized below.

1. Stupidity is Far More Dangerous Than Malice

Both thinkers conclude that stupid individuals inflict greater net damage on humanity than openly malicious actors.

  • Bonhoeffer: Argues that stupidity is a “more dangerous enemy of the good than malice.” Evil inherently carries the seeds of its own disruption because it provokes resistance, creates unease, and operates with a recognizable motive. Stupidity, by contrast, operates with an untroubled conscience and cannot be deterred.
  • Cipolla: Formalizes this in his Fifth Law: “A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person”—specifically more dangerous than a “Bandit.” While a bandit merely transfers wealth or welfare from you to themselves (resulting in zero net change to total societal welfare), a stupid person causes losses to others while gaining nothing or even incurring losses producing a pure destruction of societal capital.

2. Rationality, Logic, and Evidence Are Useless Defenses

Both observe that ordinary tools of persuasion—facts, data, and reasoned debate—fail entirely against the stupid.

  • Bonhoeffer: Notes that reason falls on deaf ears. When facts contradict a stupid person’s preconceived narrative, they simply deny the facts or brush them aside as trivial exceptions. Confronting them with evidence only angers them or prompts them to recite slogans.
  • Cipolla: Highlights that because stupid actions do not adhere to any rational calculus or self-interest, they are fundamentally unpredictable. You cannot anticipate their attacks, defend against them with logic, or negotiate an equilibrium, because there is no rational objective to bargain against.

3. Independence from Education and Intellect

Neither author equates stupidity with low intelligence, lack of schooling, or neurological deficiency.

  • Bonhoeffer: Stresses that stupidity is a human and moral defect rather than an intellectual one. He observes people who are remarkably agile intellectually yet completely stupid in their behavior and judgment.
  • Cipolla: States in his Second Law that the probability of a person being stupid is entirely independent of any other characteristic. Stupidity occurs in fixed proportions across blue-collar workers, university professors, white-collar executives, and Nobel laureates alike.

4. Society Systematically Underestimates the Threat

Both warn that non-stupid individuals chronically misjudge the frequency and destructive power of stupidity, leading to catastrophe.

  • Bonhoeffer: Laments that civilized society repeatedly leaves itself defenseless because it assumes goodwill, intellect, or common sense will prevail in public life, only to be overwhelmed when mass stupidity takes root.
  • Cipolla: Codifies this in his First Law (“Everyone always and inevitably underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation”) and Fourth Law (“Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging potential of stupid individuals”). Non-stupid people continually make the fatal mistake of associating or negotiating with stupid actors, expecting rationality and paying an enormous cost.

I was again reminded of Bonhoeffer’s and Cippola’s work by recent polling that indicates the majority of our population now rejects free market capitalism, and looks favorably (longingly?) at socialism and communism as the way to set things on the right course.  Nowhere is this malady more apparent than in the voters of California.  Were our state an independent nation, it would surely launch social orders patterned after 1917 Russia and 1933 Germany.  Fortunately, we have the ballast of other more reasonable and less stupid states to still resist the rush to an unquestioned embrace of tyranny.  How long that shaky bulwark will hold is anybody’s guess.  In the interval, tonight with strong drink in hand, let’s count the socialists on their way to Congress and the state capitals.

[4nov26 update] Well, it’s done, stupid triumphs. We have chosen the socialist cum communist road, and now the Democrats will do all possible in the next two years to make that a smooth road to big government, autocracy, central planning, more taxes, confiscation of private property, limiting freedoms, high prices, empty shelves, and equitable misery all around.

My parents and I spent half of my first year of my life in a hole in a deep Estonian forest, hiding from roaming bands of communist partisans searching to execute people like my father, a small electrical contractor and a capitalist.  I pray that my grandchildren and great-grandchildren don’t have to repeat that experience, since they too are capitalists.

I just saw a report of an exit poll showing the “cost of living” was the major factor for 88% of the voters. Where is the highest cost of living? Dem run states. Where is the highest cost of fuel? Dem run states. So – these voters then voted for…? All you can do is shake your head sadly at the folly of humans.

Not about socialism or communism…about stopping the MAGA goon squad. America flipped off Trump.
Laughing with Zelenskky as he flips Trump off and he drones Russian refineries…
Europe flipped off Trump when he started his Trump War in Iran.
Sorry cheesebag, no peace prize for you.

Just as I thought – “Look ma – I’m slicing off my nose just to spite my face!” The “lowering the cost of living” BS is already admitted to by RH. Be sure to destroy lots and lots of Russian refinery capacity – that will surely lower the price of diesel and gasoline.

BTW – There is no actual policy difference between Steve Hilton and Trump.

Seen on X, in reference to Scott Galloway calling for the execution of Elon Musk for being a “traitor to the west” while being interviewed. (Look him up if you like)…

“I think it’s very important to realize that there is a small but quickly growing faction of the political spectrum that will cheer when

    — your family Tesla gets firebombed
    — a CEO gets executed in the street
    — a podcaster is murdered at a college debate event
    — a candidate for POTUS is shot in the head
    — the world’s greatest entrepreneur is publicly threatened with execution at a fairly mainstream event”

Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night, as the Team Blue Revenge Tour cranks up. I must say that James Talarico makes me laugh and laugh, he’s the perfect New Democrat and creepy as all get-out. The main problem isn’t that the Democratic Party wins or loses in some cyclical fashion, but that the march through the institutions occurred there as well.

“I’ll take that as your acknowledgement that progressive/democrat politics has nothing to offer except opposition to the “Devil”.”

It’s a decent rallying point, but I’d say it’s mostly a Party of Pay-offs. Immigrants want infinite immigration as it’s fun to import your country into someone else’s, plus there’s always an abuela or cousin-husband or something that needs to move here. Well-meaning younger women want girl-jobs in government or non-profits. Founders want to make a living in non-profits (just for fun, check how many there are in Nevada County). People want to follow their ‘passion’ and get free housing or healthcare. School loans for useless ‘education’ needs forgivin’. The Railroad to Nowhere and USAID needs unlimited funding to help out your relatives and friends.

There’s still a little meat on the carcass.

Plus, Musk, one of the few wealthy people doing genuine work as opposed to all the billionaires in the surveillance advertising or finance business, makes a pretty good devil. He did hold up his hand once after all. Expect plenty of activity on that front from the new ‘activist’ members of Congress.

There’s a lot of dying in a culture and it should be amazing to watch. I honestly don’t think we’ll vote our way out of this predicament.

As a side note, it’s super interesting to me that AI has fallen on a left-right divide. It’s been going on for a while…

    https://techcrunch.com/2024/12/14/why-marc-andreessen-was-very-scared-after-meeting-with-the-biden-administration-about-ai/

Plus there was the wholesale rejection of compute centers in most cases with this election.

Naturally, AI is such a force-multiplier that anyone who doesn’t use it will fall behind, it doesn’t even have to be any better than it is now. I genuinely hope that ‘progressives’ view it as the Devil’s Work and stick to their guns.

Sorry, Fish and Bessie, contrary to Fox and wackydoodle right-wing propaganda outlets who thought this was a viable culture war battle…

Total NCAA Athletes: More than 500,000 to 510,000 student-athletes compete across NCAA divisions.

Number of Transgender Athletes: In congressional testimony, NCAA President Charlie Baker reported that fewer than 10 transgender student-athletes compete nationwide across all sports (representing less than 0.002% of the total athlete population).

Women’s Sports Restrictions: Following federal executive actions and policy updates, the NCAA modified its guidelines for women’s categories, leading a spokesperson to note that the number of transgender athletes currently competing specifically in women’s sports is effectively zero.

It will be fun to watch the Dems tear each other to bits next year. One faction is represented by RH with the “we’re gonna git ’em” hate-mongers and the other group represented by Paul with the hand-wringing about the folks that are “struggling paycheck to paycheck”. Latest word from our new saviors:

“Host Bret Baier asked, “When the incoming House Oversight Committee chairman-to-be sends out two words, ‘LAWYER UP’, is that the message that you think some of these candidates are looking for?”

Martin answered, “No. Let me say — and you heard Leader Jeffries say this today, you heard Sen. Schumer (D-NY), and I have been saying it all day as well, we ran on and we won on affordability. That is going to be our focus. And that is job number one. And what you’ll see in the first 100 days of the new Congress, from both the Senate and the House, is a slew of bills to focus on the affordability crisis we’re facing in this country. Because, for Democrats, we made a lot of promises during this campaign, and we have to deliver on them. And I know that Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are committed to doing that.”

    https://www.breitbart.com/clips/2026/11/05/dnc-chair-garcias-lawyer-up-statement-not-what-some-candidates-want-well-focus-on-prices/

Yeah – there’s that “affordability crisis”. I never heard during the campaigns one word about how that gets taken care of. Massive wealth transfer or money printing. You go, boy! The radical left wants the old guard out – the old guard wants to hold on to their power. The Dem billionaires just happy the wealth tax didn’t pass in CA. Meanwhile I believe Trump is POTUS for 2 more years – right? Commander in chief as well as being in charge of the Justice Dept. Gets to veto legislation? Yeah – hang on – film at 11.

“No comment from Scott…” Gee, Paul – I just read the question about a minute ago. And that comment coming from you is hilarious. You’re the king of not answering my questions of you for years.

I can’t answer for everyone but looking at Texas we see the Rs voted in fairly normal numbers but the Dems magically came up with many millions more votes than even Kamala (or any other Dem) ever got. Since Texas doesn’t require proof of citizenship to register to vote and we aren’t allowed to now go back and check – I’d say in that state we’ll never know what happened.

Over all, it looks like a combination of the Trump haters and the fools that believed that the Dems will “lower costs” without ever once asking just exactly when and how that will happen. Of course the Dems can’t lower the cost of living but they will hold lots of hearings where they will bloviate, lie and baselessly accuse Trump and associates of all manner of imagined crimes. Also the Dems will do their best to help the Mullahs and the IRGC hang on to power.

    re: election.

Seat loss is what? number 17 of worse results? roughly the same as 2018?

Obviously Obama and Clinton did worse, and I expect Trump will govern like Obama when things went bad, but it’s just business as usual. Some people want Trump to fail So Badly, regardless of whether the country is better off or not, that it’s presented as some historic big deal. He really did break a lot of people.

To me, the real story is not that the Congress changed hands, but that the Democrats found so many batshit crazy people for those seats. It’s as bad as the new mayors they’ve dug up.

I read an interesting theory, based on demographics (which will dominate in the long run if our Robot Overlords don’t upset everyone’s applecart) is that as the country fills up with Latin Americans your government begins to pattern itself after Latin America…a whipsaw between Socialsm and Fascism.
