[DOGE was an effective but short-lived effort to identify and recommend federal bureaucracies and programs that were wasteful, abusive, and/or fraudulent. While its dollar savings are in dispute, it did motivate the reduction of the federal workforce by about 300,000 employees. A good way to identify waste, fraud, and abuse in government is to motivate federal workers to report such practices since they are the daily ‘boots on the ground’ who witness/practice what’s not good. IBM had a program for years in which it gave employees sizeable bonuses for identifying bad processes and suggesting new/better ones. It saved the company millions, but required a dedicated accounting department to coordinate the overall program and assess the dollar worth of the suggested savings/benefits. Other companies have similarly rewarded programs for employees to identify inefficiencies. Could the feds do something similar? gjr]

Sorry Fishy, your hero is a lying sack of donkey dung….
“When President Trump returned to office last year, the administration had revenge on the agenda. First, the FBI purged agents who’d been involved in investigations into Trump while he was out of office. Second, the Department of Justice launched a major probe to prove a “grand conspiracy” to politically persecute Trump, which would rely in part on the former agents’ cooperation and testimony about improper or illegal actions.
Perhaps you have spotted a potential flaw in the plan. The administration apparently did not.
The team conducting the probe sought to compel testimony from agents involved in an August 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago, in which the FBI recovered documents that Trump had removed from the White House. Last week, lawyers representing agents involved in the search filed a motion saying that if they were forced to testify to a grand jury, they would relay “their firsthand memories of investigating a properly predicated allegation” that Trump had “unlawfully retained hundreds of highly classified documents,” as well as “factually supported opinions on why and how such retention put the country’s national security at risk.”
No one should be surprised that the agents, who appear to have already been fired for simply doing their job, were not eager to testify in court that they’d been involved in anything untoward. Although such testimony would pose serious problems for the DOJ probe, the motion’s intent was not to sabotage it, The New York Times notes, but rather to seek assurances that if the agents testified, they would not be violating a federal judge’s order that bars publication of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report about it. (Smith testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee today—more on that in a moment.)
More to the point, the agents were never likely to have the sort of damning information about a conspiracy that prosecutors want. The facts of the Mar-a-Lago case are not complicated: Trump absconded with documents, many of them highly sensitive; did not turn them over when asked to do so by the National Archives and later via a subpoena; and was found in possession of them at Mar-a-Lago. Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing, didn’t really dispute any of these facts. He argued that he had declassified the materials—a claim for which he provided no evidence—and that he rightfully possessed them. (Prosecutors further alleged that he’d suggested to his lawyers that they hide some documents, and that he’d tried to hide others from them.)
The grand-conspiracy probe, which attempts to tie together the documents case, investigation of the 2016 Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, and other investigations into Trump allies, has been a mess. In April, a career prosecutor leading the team was removed, reportedly after she concluded that there was not enough evidence to charge John Brennan, the CIA director under President Obama who has repeatedly tangled with Trump, with any crimes. (Brennan is reportedly facing two separate DOJ criminal investigations, which a law professor told The Washington Sun is an indication of either prosecutorial incompetence or malice; those might not be mutually exclusive.)”

Differences from the earlier arrangements
1941 Kauffmann–Hull agreement: this was a wartime protectorate signed by the Danish minister in Washington without Copenhagen’s authorization. The 2026 deal is a three-party treaty-level agreement among governments.
1951 agreement: this was bilateral (US–Denmark) and set up the defense-area model that the 2026 deal extends. Greenland had no formal seat.
2004 Igaliku Agreement: this brought Greenland into discussions about Thule but was not a full amendment of the 1951 framework.
2026 deal: Greenland is a signatory. Its minister Naja Nathanielsen called it the first binding agreement Greenland has signed as a country. Other reported features:

It would still apply if Greenland eventually chooses independence.
kttc
Contracts for setting up, maintaining or dismantling bases go to Greenlandic sources to the maximum extent possible.

The most corrupt clownshow of a Presidential administration rolls on….
“An appeals court Tuesday sided with a lower court judge who determined President Trump colluded with the Department of Justice (DOJ) in bringing and later dismissing a case seeking $10 billion in damages from the IRS.
Florida-based U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams in July found that the lawsuit that served as the hook for the $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund amounted to collusion as the two parties were never truly averse. She also sanctioned two Trump attorneys in the process.
The president, who sued his own administration in January over the leak of his tax returns, struck an agreement with the IRS in late May to dismiss the case, with the DOJ then creating an “anti-weaponization” fund to provide payments to those who claim to have been wronged by the government.”

The proto-fascist Orwellian Trump administration rolls out America.gov and immediately has to censor it for telling the truth…
“The Trump administration’s newly launched AI-powered government website, America.gov, quickly ran into contradictions and adjustments during its rollout on September 29, 2026. [1, 2, 3]
Key Issues During the Launch
Contradictory AI Answers: According to reporting by the Associated Press (via ClickOrlando), early users asking the AI-powered portal questions—such as who won the 2020 presidential election or naming the federal department operating out of the Pentagon—received official government-sourced answers that directly contradicted statements frequently proclaimed by President Donald Trump. [1]
On-the-Fly Modifications: As Trump was still delivering his launch address in Washington, D.C., the site began altering how it handled sensitive prompts. [1, 2]
Refusal to Answer: When queried again regarding the 2020 election, the platform shifted to stating it could not answer “political questions”—a restricted fallback response it also applied to inquiries about whether Trump had been impeached or convicted of felony charges. [1]”

George. I have a question. If totalitarianism is on the far extreme right of the political system (à la North Korea) and on the far left of the political spectrum is anarchy (no internal or external chains on individual behavior or passions), can a political system’s place on that spectrum be quantified? If so, what data points would one need in order to determine where on the spectrum and whether such controls derived from internal factors (morality or religion) or from external factors (government control)?

BarryP – “Anarchy is a society or state without rulers, formal government, or hierarchical authority.” Totalitarianism is NOT on the extreme right, it is the inevitable and stable form of collectivist (extreme left) governance. Both conservative (free market capitalist) and collectivist (e.g Marxism, communism) acknowledge anarchy as their potential and/or desirable endpoints of governance. The two types of anarchies are culturally cohesive and culturally incoherent. Human nature neither promotes nor permits a culturally cohesive anarchy like that sought as the ultimate goal of organizing a communist society. The road to that goal always ends in a stable tyrannical totalitarianism. The desired (not guaranteed) goal of conservative ideologies is a minimal stable governance of sufficient cultural cohesion that is based on universal observance of the Bastiat Triangle of Rights. That not being achieved will plunge society into a ‘Mad Max’ anarchy which may well also end up in a stable tyrannical totalitarianism. The Left’s road is to a certain dystopia, the Right’s destination has a good likelihood of halting with the stable minimal form of governance. And there you have the Great Divide.
LikeLike
George likes to judge “the Left by its record (“always ends in totalitarianism”) while the Right is judged by its aspiration (“good likelihood of a minimal stable government”). Utopian dreams?
No large state has stably reached a Bastiat-style minimal government to test that claim. If you compare records instead, the right-leaning side includes Franco, Salazar, Pinochet, and the fascist regimes, and market economies coexist comfortably with authoritarianism today (Singapore, and China’s hybrid system).”
“What the evidence best supports is something like: regimes that seek to remake society through concentrated, unchecked power tend toward tyranny, and anarchy tends to collapse into rule by whoever is strongest. Both are fairly well supported. The “Great Divide” is then less about left versus right than about institutional design: whether a society has checks on power, a rule of law that binds rulers, and enough social trust to need little coercion. Many people on both sides would accept that framing, and the real disagreements (how big the state should be, how to weigh equality against liberty) mostly happen inside it, not across it.:”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sipping tea from beer mugs with his coworkers, Kyle Bos listed the ways his life is changing.
Bos has two daughters, with a third due in January. At the grocery store, five items cost as much as a full cart once did. And on Wednesday, Bos and nearly 1,400 other people were laid off from their jobs at what had been the Navistar truck factory in southwestern Ohio.
The layoffs — occurring just three days before Donald Trump’s rally on Saturday at a nearby high school — were large enough to basically erase an entire year of job growth in the greater Dayton, Ohio area. And they are one reason why Bos, 30, plans to spend the final weeks before the November election canvassing votes for Democrats.
Asked how many times he voted for Trump, Bos held up three tattooed fingers. But he said he’s done with the president.
“Something has to change politically in this country,” said Bos, a member of the United Auto Workers who identifies as a centrist.

RH (Claude) – All of this kind of differentiation is moot when you consider the litmus test between conservetarian and collectivist governance. If an ideology demands the unlimited growth of government, the conformation of behavior toward a common state-dictated standard, and the ratcheting loss of private property, then it by definition is leftwing and collectivist. All fascist governments have been leftwing, and mis-designated rightwing only by Marxist propaganda seeking to promote a global collective. And that is the basis for our current Great Divide, correctly framed by Claude as resulting from “institutional design: whether a society has checks on power, a rule of law that binds rulers, and enough social trust to need little coercion.” The Left (socialist, communist, Marxist, fascist, …) has a demonstrated history of violating these tenets. That neither side has reached its stated goal of governance (communism’s ultimate absence of government, conservetarian’s minimalist government based on Bastiat’s rights) is a moot point in this debate. All social goals have been and are aspirational, and therefore serve to guide the organization of societies in the pursuit of such goals. Today we are no different.
Have no idea what Claude means by “the real disagreements (how big the state should be, how to weigh equality against liberty) mostly happen inside it, not across it.” Inside?? Across?? The Left has already declared its goal of limitless government that enforces equity over liberty. The Right fosters decentralization, letting localized cohesive cohorts sort out how much overarching government is needed to sustain stable free market capitalism. That was the aspirational goal of Founders when they bequeathed us a constitutional republic. With some bumps on the road, it has worked out for 250 years with historical benefits accruing worldwide.
Thank you for this civil discussion.

“Save that shit for the cowards who don’t care if you fail,” the retiring senator continued. “I care if you fail and right now we are failing.”
In a June 6 message, the senator pushed back against the suggestion that Trump had threatened him with a Republican primary challenge.
“If you had ever threatened me directly with a primary, I would have immediately told you to fuck yourself, and I would have announced my retirement immediately,” Tillis wrote in another stunning text.
“Save those threats and head games for cowards and fools,” the outgoing lawmaker added.”
