The funny thing is that they managed to make journalism even worse than it was. It’s a shame just how partisan it all is, 100% op-ed now, but that’s generally been the case. No doubt a late 19th C. newspaper makes the Washington Post look positively neutral.
The harm that the internet has done has been remarkable though. Click-bait, no-one-knows-yer-a-dog expertise on all matters, inability by anyone under the age of (say) 40 to read more than a paragraph, stories based on what some guy posted on X or Reddit. Phoned-in outrage is the order of the day.
Add this to the increasing importance of large organizations, companies or government, on one’s life and you end up with a mob running from pillar to post. It’s easy to pick on psul, but really no one is as stupid as all of us together. Maybe it’s just natural for a lack of self-reliance to result in grasping after one religion or the other.

You can understand the roots of the word ‘hysteria’ when you read the local paper.
Here’s my solemn wish. People writing these screeds should have actual direct experience in and at least a little domain knowledge about their subjects when they actually get them officially published like this. ‘Activists’ could stand to go to city council meetings, watch the Stupidvisors do their thing at the county, dig into zoning or funding or local schools or whatever.
It would be a lot more interesting to hear what someone has to say about the ever-proposed $750k for the Nevada City skate park (for, what? there’s probably 100-200 kids in that age group, and only a fraction of them would use the thing) than what crazy ladies think about world affairs, no matter how self-righteously fervent. Scammy local non-profits are an interesting topic. Maybe argue about the Nuremberg Rally flag display on Broad Street. Fire issues. How’s the local sewer and water plants doin’? Why is PG&E so broken? Where are all these people getting their Teslas fixed? Why is Jerry Cirino on the radio so much? Questions abound.
