George Rebane

The ongoing Iran imbroglio is described by Gerard Baker (writes for the WSJ and London Times) in a level-headed piece, ‘History Repeats in Iran’.  I have been critical of President Trump’s diffidence on completing the Iran war that borders on pusillanimity (accurate words that are usually above my pay grade).  However, Baker views the conflict as “an asymmetrical 21st-century war where Iran defines victory simply as survival, utilizing asymmetric tactics to offset superior American and Israeli military strength.”  Gemini correctly summarizes his key points –

The Asymmetric Strategy

  • “Not Losing” is Winning: Baker argues that Iran knows it cannot defeat the U.S. or Israel in a direct, conventional war. Instead, it exploits power imbalances through proxy warfare and terrorism to exhaust the resolve of its more powerful adversaries.
  • Strategic Wear and Tear: While the U.S. aims for decisive outcomes, Iran plays a long game, relying on time and survival to achieve strategic advantages.

Critique of the U.S. Approach

  • Faltering Operations: In his column, Baker observed that the ongoing military operations against Iran appear to be failing to meet U.S. objectives. He has questioned the escalation, suggesting the U.S. faces the “ugly choice” of either accepting unsatisfactory ends or wading deeper into a difficult and complex conflict.
  • Messaging and Propaganda: Baker has delivered striking rebukes of the Trump administration’s messaging regarding the conflict. He expressed concern over the lack of clear objectives and timelines, comparing the administration’s contradictory rhetoric about the war’s progress to the unreliable narratives of wartime propagandists.

“Iran(the mullahs and the Revolutionary Guard) plays a long game, relying on time and survival to achieve strategic advantages.”

Also relying on their buddies in the US rooting for them to win just so Trump can’t have a positive result.

“Their buddies in the US”…are your ilk.

Just read George’s piece in TheUnion. I agreed with most of it until he got to the point of trying to find someone to blame for the failures of Trump’s plan…

“Democrats, the mainstream media, and public opinion are hammering the administration and Republicans. Iran is betting that this political pressure will force concessions before the regime suffers decisive damage.”

I guess he forgot about MAGA…

“The “America First” ideology—prioritizing domestic interests, strict immigration control, and non-interventionist foreign policy—is strongly championed by several specific groups today. The Modern Populist Right: This coalition, largely aligned with the “MAGA” faction of the Republican Party, believes U.S. interests should override globalism. They advocate for protective trade tariffs, robust domestic manufacturing, and strict border enforcement.Conservative Think Tanks: Organizations like the America First Policy Institute and America First Works drive policy research. They build legislative frameworks focusing on economic nationalism and deregulation.Nationalist & Nativist Organizations: Far-right and nationalist factions strongly advocate for this doctrine, with a heavy emphasis on zero-immigration policies and cultural preservation.Non-Interventionist Factions: Drawing inspiration from the historic 1940s America First Committee, some libertarian and anti-war groups favor keeping the U.S. out of foreign conflicts, focusing resources entirely on domestic needs.Historically, the phrase has ties to the nativist American Party of the 1850s and the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s, though modern iterations have generally shifted focus toward economic and geopolitical policies.” sez AI

RH – a more careful reading of my Union piece reveals that I nowhere blamed Democrats for the failures of Trump’s negotiations plan. What I do claim, to broad general agreement, is that Democrats are taking political advantage of Iran’s strategic delay tactics to bolster their comprehensive and perennial attack on all things Trump.

Sorry RH – once again you show your ignorance. America first means not allowing Iran to hamper our trade with other nations and threaten us with nukes. The Dems want only to pay tribute to the mullahs and ignore the on-going threats from Iran. You are claiming that the people who voted for Trump are all called MAGA and now you claim all of MAGA are both going along with everything the president wants and at the same time opposing him. Get your story straight dude. The Dems are calling for America to surrender to Iran – they are not supporting the president. The leaders in Iran are holding out for the Dems to come back into power so they can get another cargo plane load of cash from us.
