George Rebane

Hearing that strong assertion, the Christian answers joyfully, ‘He is risen indeed!’

For us, Christmas is the promise, and Easter its fulfillment.  The summation of all Christianity is Christ’s covenant in the promised transcendence of Man, all concentrated into one simple declaration – ‘He is risen!’  Without this, our faith is a fraud; with it, Christianity promises Man to become an unending part of God’s love of all Creation.

This is RR’s annual message celebrating Easter.

Hopefully everyone had a good Easter holiday.

What I spent part of it doing was a deep dive on Melito of Sardis. Interesting, there’s just so much to know out there. It’s like every time I dabble in Biblical archaeology to any degree, my ignorance is breathtaking.

Like me absolutely not having a clue as to who Melito of Sardis was.

Three Wikipedia random links in and you’re 1500 years away….

For anyone else out there, courtesy of some Google AI or the other:

“The earliest recorded observance of Easter (as Pascha) dates to the mid-2nd century (c. 100s AD), with the earliest primary source being a Paschal homily by Melito of Sardis.. “

To be fair, major religions all seem to overlap, often picking up each other’s habits and belief systems. Rebirth, floods, creation ideas, it looks to me like the network of ideas that linguists cook up for language evolution. You do have to wonder about the millennia before more historical times. Mrs. Yahweh, for example, is a thing, but the record is pretty sparse.

Maybe somebody will find a way to pick up audio from clay on a potter’s wheel, like a crude LP.

The trap is the easy, yet plausible story, about interconnections where the evidence is not very solid. People love them their patterns in clouds.
