[So now outfits that collect and search internet content want to start charging AI companies that make chatbots for the data they use to train their LLMs.  Companies like Google and Amazon get this data for ‘free’ – actually, what it costs them to scrape it from the web – as it is provided also for free by billions of online consumers.  The conundrum is that the very large data repositories don’t want to drive away the AI-based search engines by making their training datasets too expensive.  Until now the whole purpose of those freely accessible datasets has been to have third-party search results point to the data that the Googles and Amazons make available.  And since it costs tens of millions of dollars in power and processing time to make a functioning LLM, everyone involved already has skin in the game.  If it ain’t broke, … .  gjr]

Not emphasized quite as much was the large drop in March & February jobs-
“April’s upside surprise was offset by sharp downward revisions in previous months. March’s count was slashed to 165,000, DOWN 71,000 from the initial estimate, while February fell to 248,000, a REDUCTION of 78,000.”
The drops were much larger than the unexpected April increase. So let’s wait for the real-adjusted-April-jobs to come out in a month.
Also left out was the drop of 2.7% in labor productivity. This marks the 5th quarter in a row that productivity declined. If that continues, forget about pay raises and recovery. Productivity directly contributes to pay raises and better living conditions. If productivity keeps decreasing, in 10 years we won’t be able to afford to pay for natural gas to heat our homes!
And you thought JB was off his rocker for dumping methane from new construction. He was merely looking ahead – he’s a real wizard.

Looking into parking mula in 6 month T-Bills. The tax exempt status is worth it with no management fees. Know a guy who just parked cash yesterday in a saving account at 4.6 percent. Unbelievable. Tax exempt is the way to go at my age.
I mentioned before how I am living off a modest Social Security Supplemental Income check and monthly CA muni bonds. What I failed to mention was muni-bonds bought years ago are only 10% of my liquid holdings….lest the reader got the wrong idea. The stocks are holding their own….but I am concerned about that 90%. Yes, I worry.

Right after the report came out that the Biden Administration had no idea where 85,000 migrant children had vanished to, Susan Rice got the boot. Rice’s problem is she knew all about it but refuse to acknowledge it. Blind eye. As Biden’s top domestic policy adviser and Obama insider, she withheld facts from the President. In her place will be the first Asian female to hold the post.
‘Biden names Neera Tanden as new domestic policy adviser’
“I am pleased to announce that Neera Tanden will continue to drive the formulation and implementation of my domestic policy, from economic mobility and racial equity to health care, immigration and education,” Biden said in a statement.
He noted that Tanden will be the first Asian American to lead any of the three major White House policy councils in history. Tanden was previously president and CEO of the Center for American Progress and the Center for American Progress Action Fund.
Biden had nominated Tanden to head the Office of Management and Budget in 2021 at the start of his administration. She withdrew her nomination after not getting support from centrist Senate Democrats amid controversy, which stemmed from her time at the Center for American Progress. She had written risky tweets, including one comparing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to the “Harry Potter” character Voldemort.
Tanden previously worked as senior adviser for health reform at the Department of Health and Human Services under former President Obama.
“She was a key architect of the Affordable Care Act and helped drive key domestic policies that became part of my agenda, including clean energy subsidies and sensible gun reform. While growing up, Neera relied on some of the critical programs that she will oversee as Domestic Policy Advisor, and I know those insights will serve my Administration and the American people well,” Biden said in his statement.
Tanden also has had her hands in campaigns, and her promotion to domestic policy adviser comes a week after the president launched his reelection bid. She was director of domestic policy for the Obama-Biden presidential campaign and policy director for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.“

Here’s a quote from the man a majority of Republicans would like to see return as President of the United States:
“The deposition, taken in October at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, was made public a day after Carroll’s lawyers rested their case at the trial for the suit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. Trump’s lawyers presented no witnesses of their own.
In the deposition, Trump says “that over the last million years … unfortunately or fortunately,” people who are considered “stars” could grab women sexually without their consent.
Trump told Carroll’s lawyer that he considered himself to be a star.”

Miss (from Rebane): To Union readers (April 25, 2023) who don’t realize that the Union has more than one way to shut down differing opinions submitted by community members. The powers that be there, via email tell writers that what they have submitted are conspiracy theories, lies and misinformation and rudely tell the writer that their opinion will not be printed as submitted. Those same powers have another tactic, hold submissions for weeks at a time without communicating with writers. The Union also simply cancels and removes previously printed opinion pieces from the website.

Yes, there’s been some announcements lately on smaller reactors, I’ve run into them too. The moment there’s an actual design win and ground breaking I’ll believe it. The anti-nuke political forces are too strong. Hell, you’re not even allowed to use a pipeline instead of truck/train. The anti-mine people will just expand their portfolio.
It’s hard to avoid $$$/watt as an issue, and my bet is that these things have economy of scale.
At this rate, the Forces of Darkness will simply require solar and wind power, provide no plans whatsoever for base load, and simply devolve us to rotating blackouts when it’s hot (or dark outside). It’s for the children after all.

Naturally, once a first world nation has it’s population growth diminish due to wealth, they are now forced to take an ever greater number of people from elsewhere. There’s probably a name for that in economics.
