Student’s lawsuit against college officials for suppressing her First Amendment rights moves forward.
Maggie DeJong, who studied art therapy at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), expressed her Christian religious values and conservative political perspectives on social media, in student group chats, and in class conversations.
On February 10, 2022, DeJong was served with no contact orders from the University precluding her from any contact with three of her fellow students—including in classes. According to a letter sent on DeJong’s behalf to SIUE by her attorneys with the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the no contact orders not only “offered no factual basis” for the school’s actions but also violated her rights to free expression at a public institution.
When asked by Campus Reform what the final incident was that prompted DeJong’s compatriots to complain to the University administration, DeJong’s lawyer said the inciting incident is still unknown.
Though she had quickly forced her school to back down from trying to blacklist her, as described in a previous blacklist story in 2022, Maggie DeJong has now won a major court decision with a ruling on March 20, 2023 by the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Illinois that her lawsuit against three administrators at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) can go forward.
More important, the ruling stated that these three administrators do not qualify in almost all circumstances for qualified immunity. They are liable for their actions in violating DeJong’s constitutional rights, including her right to free speech.

Truth be told, I’d say that offshoring was ramping up pretty well in the mid 1980s.

Team Blue bombthrowers aside, it’s an interesting question, one of those tensions between the rights of individuals, the responsibilities of parents, the authority of The State. Given that a)’diversity’ is the absolute highest good, above all else and b)45% of marriages are between relatives in the Middle East and places like Afghanistan have an average female age of 15 for marriage, you probably won’t see much push for restriction here.
Dunno what the rules should be. Modern courtship and marriage practice is so far afield from the way it worked for the last 10k+ years that it’s probably a bit unnatural. Maybe the future is in the Japanese model of the ‘parasite single’.

I dunno know why he keeps going back to that well either. He keeps drawing the equivalency of pedophilia, irreversible minor genital mutilation, and under the legal age of consent marriages WITH legal and consensual marriages of those not legally adults. Different cultures still have arranged (forced) marriages. The only reason Muslims believe the marrying age for their daughters is 12 years old is because the Prophet took himself a 12 year old wife. If he married a 11 year old, that would be the marrying age of girls. The reason the Muslims force genital mutilation of their young daughters by removing the skin around and cutting the clitoris (the pleasure center of the vulva) is because they (and any future husbands) do not want the girls to become whores.

re:Arranged marriages. It’s worth keeping in mind that those aren’t always (or often) selling the daughter off into servitude somewhere. In an era when families (and extended families) still mattered, it was all as much business deal as anything. Both of the concerned parties weren’t expected to fall in luv until some time later, if at all. You might tell your Sikh friends about how awful arranged marriages are with that concerned Progressive face.
It’s not a thing I have a strong opinion on other than noting it’s just one more way to glue human groups together, like religion or bowling leagues.
