[In updating the government’s butt stupid department, we witnessed today a major speech by SecTreas Janet Yellen assuring the Red Chinese that that US has no intention in surpassing them in international trade and economic progress, let alone outcompeting them in military matters. A minor but (to me) good example of why news reporting is shite.
For some stupid reason, I took a look at The Drudge Report this morning. I think it’s a gawdawful site, but felt the need to scratch the scab.
Tag line on Drudge: Italy Strips Gay Couples of Parental Recognition…
Leads to headline on WSJ: Italy Strips Some Gay Couples of Parental Recognition
Leads to story: it (Italian gubmint) is pushing for non-biological gay parents to be retroactively struck from birth documents.
Note how the story becomes less outrageous with the iterations. I honestly don’t know why a non-biological parent would be on a birth certificate in any case. There’s other paperwork for that.

I got the shingles shot, after my wife had an outbreak of it. I can resist everything but pain.
I had had a bizarre patch of itchy skin above my right ass cheek, and just hours after the shot it acted up a’gin, one last time.

I had the shingles shot. It was a reality check, about 10 years ago. The new doc (for me) gave me a script to go over to Rite-Aid and get it. I immediately protested saying shingle shots were for old people! The doc simply paused and said I was in the age category. Reality check for sure. I sometimes look in the mirror and wonder who is that old fart looking back at me. In my mind I am still a nice looking 30 year old. A stranger in the mirror.
Guess I should have known by the hearing aid junk mail I receive on occasion.
Think the shingles shot lasts for ten years. I, like Gregory, do not suffer pain graciously.

Maybe it was 5 years ago I got the shingles shot. Sure wish I got the flu-pneumonia shot last fall. It’s late April and I have been down since right after Turkey Day. Kinda like Dr. Rebane without all the doctor’s visits. 🙂
I remember when there were chicken pox parties for the kids. Get er done and a break from school.

Efficacy of shingles shots seems to depend on the vaccine, I usually assume that flu shots rarely track current variants. In any case, it’s probably all some kind of Monte Carloish sort of thing. You are basically nudging probabilities. TANSTAAGL (there ain’t no such thing as a guaranteed lunch).

While perusing The Union I came across a recent article by Tom Durkin responding to Jo Ann Rebane wanting a place where information and opinions can be posted. Apparently she does not appreciate negative feedback. Tom Durkin suggested the new publication, Sierra Thread.
It looks like there might be an alternative to The Union in some respects.

It made me consider risk tolerance, how it’s acquired, how it molds your philosophy, the power of pattern recognition and personal experience, etc.
Voting is reflected, lifestyles, location, 1000 decisions. Surround yourself with beaucoup fatal cases of cancer, car crashes, suicides, infectious illness, people on their very last Benjamin, and that thing can become the overriding risk. Sometimes it’s innate.
A Stoic would argue that it’s all for the best, a Christian or personal favorite of Hera might ask for a little help, an AI-user would buy a new Volvo as it’s present economic value based on crash safety exceeds the cost by 12.7%.
These are tricky shoals.

I tell you what I’d like to see is someone who writes local news and mostly minimizes the puff pieces (NEW RESTAURANT GIVES CANDY TO ACTIVIST CHILDREN AT CELTIC FAIR!). “In her letter to the editor on 4/22, Jo Ann Rebane complained, “We need a vehicle where differing opinions can be expressed without threats or being labeled misinformation, lies, or conspiracy theories.” No, we don’t need a vehicle that allows misinformation, lies, or conspiracy theories to be promulgated. This would defeat the purpose of this newspaper, which does encourage differing opinions – as long as they’re based on provable facts and verifiable information. If Ms. Rebane wants a vehicle that will spread misinformation, lies, or conspiracy theories, the new publication Sierra Thread should be happy to indulge her desire.

Gregory, don’t forget about Barry! Tom is a REAL journalist, lol. Sounds exactly like our former former new director for the local alternative FM station. Barry has no credibility, like VDH.
“MISS (from Editorial Board member Tom Durkin): To the new Sierra Thread website that self-righteously claims to be ““transparent, uncorrupted, rigorous, fearless journalism.” Really? It’s not transparent who is running or financing this slick, well-presented, clearly right-wing opinion site. Authors of current pieces on the site include Barry Pruett and Jason Tedder who are failed political candidates, not bona fide journalists. Honest journalism requires more than self-serving claims to be such. Read this site with caution and consider the source – well, no, you can’t, because they don’t say who they are.”

re: Misanthrope@6:39AM
I’d certainly be more likely to spend two grand on books or some fine hand tools, but can certainly see the point of the uproar. The whole Adona affair seemed to form around the super feminist out-of-town highly political Team Blue elections official vs. highly political Team Red people in the community. Clerk-recorder is a gig that needs apolitical folks who simply follow the law, but you’re not going to get that in this day and age. Like district attorneys, it’s some low hanging fruit if you want to seize control of a society.
We basically live in the California version of one of those uber-old boy counties in the South somewhere. Drawls and white suits replaced by liberal true believers. Once in power hard to extract as their talons reach deep, a metastasized home owners association.
“framing 2024 as a choice between ‘more rights or fewer’”
I’m trying to think of how my rights have expanded in my lifetime in any way. It seems like every year there’s new rules, growth in scope of government, multiplication of the grifter class. Chasing power and status leads people to some weird places.
The counterexample is solely abortion rights (hang on, add the ability for children to self-prescribe body mutiliation). It’s like Jan. 6 being used to excuse the thousands of crazy people riots, building burnings and the like. Those damn Republicans are evil because they want to assign some human rights to a pre-breathing human (or simply remove .gov funding for fetus killin’) so we’ll make them behave in every do-gooder fashion we can think of. Viability-based law seems as good a compromise as anything, but instead we get the stupidity of Oregon vs. Texas, although you can imagine the uproar by US pro-abortion activists if they had to live in most of Europe.
In any case, fetus killing and child mutilation seem like ideal GOTV concepts in 2023. Any philosophies generated by the founding fathers are largely dead to be replaced by internet-addicted Karens and mentally-ill children. Like a battle, it’s a marvelous thing to watch from afar.

It’s just a playground insult, probably expected as the brain cell plaque accumulates, although it’s interesting to think of ‘connection’.
My general take is that you are only really connected to the town you went to high school in, for good or ill. Your parents worked locally, you knew your friends’ parents, there’s a local culture that was organically come by, they are formative years generally. In the case of military brats, there’s an unavoidable grasping at place once they are on their own. They never have the ties, at all levels, that a ‘local’ really has. It’s just another hole in their psyche that a lot of modern people have.

Took a close look, not seeing a gun.
Potentially, there’s some sort of muzzle flash to the right, but that could easily be a kind of artifact of the camera.
Given the number of privately-owned miniguns, they could have made a more dramatic video, but the cost per trigger pull is kind of off-putting.

Democratic lawmakers caught on hot mic mocking parental rights as ‘garbage,’ ‘stupid’
Concern over parental rights propelled Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin to victory in 2021
Two Democratic lawmakers in Virginia were caught on hot mic last week mocking parental rights as “garbage,” “crap,” and “stupid,” according to two recordings posted on social media by the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC).
In the recordings, which were taken at a Friday meet and greet at Christopher Newport University, state Sen. Monty Mason and state Del.
