‘PolitiFact Kneecaps Media Attempts to Blame Trump for Ohio Train Disaster’
The leftist fact-checker conceded Feb. 17 that even if the 2015 Obama-era regulation “requiring high-hazard cargo trains to be equipped with electronically controlled pneumatic brakes by 2023” was still in effect, it wouldn’t have made a difference in preventing the Ohio train disaster.
“[The rule] would not have applied to the Norfolk Southern train that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, because it was not categorized as a high-hazard cargo train,” PolitiFact wrote.

I’d like to know why if the left thinks the Obama train safety rule was so damn important, then why didn’t Biden re-instate it?
Apparently what they really want isn’t train safety – just something to try to club Trump with.

Looks like reality is setting in for the dems in the shitholes-
For years, Republicans have sought to win over voters by depicting Democratic-led cities as lawless centers of violence that need tough-on-crime policies. In Chicago, some of the Democrats running for mayor are deploying the same strategy as they debate how to make the city safer.
One leading candidate, who touts his endorsement from the Chicago police union, says “crime is out of control” and the city needs hundreds more officers patrolling its streets. Another hopeful says that if suspects flee a crime scene, officers should be able to “hunt them down like a rabbit.”
Even incumbent Lori Lightfoot, the first Black woman and first openly gay person to serve as Chicago mayor, has used language right out of the GOP playbook, accusing a top rival in her reelection bid of wanting to defund the police.
The shift in rhetoric reflects the degree to which concerns about crime have dominated Tuesday’s mayoral election in Chicago and threatened Lightfoot’s reelection bid. Far from being an outlier, the nation’s third-largest city is just the latest Democratic stronghold where public safety has become a top election issue.
The increased attention on public safety follows a spike in crime rates in many communities that coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic.
there has been disagreement even among Democrats about so-called progressive public safety policies such as ending cash bail or providing safe injection sites for drug users.
The difference, he said, is that crime is no longer largely isolated to some predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods. As more crime is occurring in other parts of the highly segregated city, including in the downtown and other areas frequented by tourists, public safety is also top of mind for white voters
Chicago has a higher per-capita homicide rate than New York or Los Angeles, but it’s lower than other Midwestern cities, such as St. Louis and Detroit. Still, the number of homicides in Chicago hit a 25-year high in 2021 with 797, according to the Chicago Police Department.

“Before the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, Albert Speer, who became the Third Reich’s Armaments Minister during World War II, blamed the dangers of modern technology, rather than the decisions he and others had made, for the catastrophes of the war and the Holocaust.”
You know, there’s probably some truth to that. The ‘modern technology’ could be thought of as including improved organizational skills in addition to more mastery of the physical world. The sheer scale of the GULAG system is another example.
Thing is, whether it’s Edward I expunging Jews from England or the French chasing around Huguenots, the dominant tribe stomping the lesser one is baked into the cake of humanity, it’s just that we’ve become more efficient at it.
Them German philosophers sure can be a read though. Lotsa phrasing that sounds funny in English, a certain amount of word salad. If anything, a lot of this stuff lacks predictability. The seeds are always there. When you combine moral superiority with opportunities for personal advancement, most anything can happen.
Dunno if it’s worse when the two sides are more evenly matched.

Both maybe?
Aviation appears to have gone down the same Moore’s Other Law path that high-end semiconductors did. Every so many years the development cost doubles.
At some point the situation looks to be so intertwined with government, and all it’s absurdities, that it breaks. The grit of monopsony and monopoly gets pounded into the bearings of the economy and things get ugly.
There’s certainly no reason for government to encourage real marketplaces as it makes .gov control of it all more difficult. It’s a lot harder to build a bureaucratic empire atop a hoard of smaller businesses.
C’est la vie. We’ll just have to hope that organizations like the Boeing DEI Department pull everything together through the superpowers of diversity and equity. It’s our only chance. Elon Musk would be well advised to steer clear of the airliner biz.

A really funny thing about that piece of our wondrous economic pie is that the Soviets had significantly more competition between aviation and space organizations (design bureaus) than the US did post-WWII. I believe that there were three separate space efforts at one time.

U.S. District Court Chief Judge Beryl Howell unsealed her extraordinary Dec. 28 decision on Friday evening, determining that the “powerful public interest” in seeing the previously secret opinion outweighed the need for continued secrecy.
Perry, a Republican lawmaker from Pennsylvania, had urged Howell to block the Justice Department from accessing 2,219 documents stored on his phone, which was seized and imaged by the FBI last August as part of the 2020 election investigation.”

I find the newer Harbor Freight hand tools to be actually quite good – I’ve never broken a single one and the chrome is perfect so far. The off-shore Craftsman tools are junk. Flaking chrome and soft metal. I look for the older American made ones on flea-bay or yard sales. I do have some Koken sockets (Whitworth) from 1970 that have served well and can recommend them. I do love good tools made when quality was paramount. My fine measuring tools are mostly Starrett (est 1880 Athol, Mass) but Mitutoyo ones are in there as well.
Kipple is an interesting term and I admit it is a constant fight to rid my life of the stuff. About 40 pounds of the stuff went into the garbage can last week.

Like other woke Hollywood awards shows, the SAG Awards is facing dwindling public interest, with ratings plummeting to alarmingly low levels. In 2013, the SAG Awards drew more than 5 million viewers, which was considered low at the time. Last night’s viewership represents less than 30 percent of that.
As a result, broadcasters like TNT and TBS are opting to dump the low-rated broadcasts for which they would normally have to pay a hefty price to the awards organizer. The IFC Channel recently decided it won’t air the low-rated Indie Spirit Awards, which will now be streamed on YouTube.
As Breitbart News reported, Netflix announced in January a multiyear deal to stream the SAG Awards. This year’s broadcast was streamed on Netflix’s YouTube channel, with plans to stream the event live globally on Netflix’s platform starting next year.
This year’s Golden Globes broadcast on NBC also saw its ratings tumble to a new low.
