Interesting facts on the guy you would have our thinking done by…
“António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres GCC GCL … is a Portuguese politician and diplomat. Since 2017, he has served as secretary-general of the United Nations, the ninth person to hold this title. A member of the Portuguese Socialist Party, Guterres served as prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002… Guterres served as secretary-general of the Socialist Party from 1992 to 2002… He served as president of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005, and was the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015.[4] Guterres was elected secretary-general in October 2016, succeeding Ban Ki-moon at the beginning of the following year and becoming the first European to hold this office since Kurt Waldheim in 1981.”
A politician, and a Socialist at that.

You completely miss the point Scott. The Dems now have a strong issue to run on. You can see lots of State ballot measures in the near future that will drive votes to the Dems. Also abortion will be a huge issue in the fall. Kansas is a very conservative State and look what happened. Must be disappointing to you since you are so anti abortion.

Paul – “The Dems now have a strong issue to run on. You can see lots of State ballot measures in the near future that will drive votes to the Dems.”
What issue? As Gregory pointed out – this puts it right back at pre-1972. Was it a big driver then?
Kansas is mostly 3 large cities. And they are not very conservative. The rural areas and smaller cities no longer hold much sway.
If this is really such a big winner for the Dems, then why did they scream and cry about it when the SCOTUS decision came down?
Of course I’m disappointed – but if the people in Kansas want to kill black babies en mass, there’s nothing I can do about it. Interesting it gets Paul so excited. Does the body count of black babies get you a woody, Paul?

I actually hadn’t followed the issue in Kansas closely since I don’t live there and don’t pay any taxes to Kansas.
So – looked it up and it seems the big “upset” was nothing of the kind. Kansas simply voted to maintain their status quo, including current restrictions. Paul’s big wet dream of this issue leading to great wins for the Dems in Kansas seem to not have happened.
If the issue comes up again for a vote in the general, then we’ll see. In the meantime, meh.

Paul. Abortion will be an issue. You are mistaken about how. Progressives have only themselves to blame that Roe was overturned. They can’t blame conservatives. They can’t blame evangelicals. They can’t blame the Supreme Court. They can’t blame Trump. I think most people in the United States have always been sympathetic to the single woman who is pregnant and can’t afford a child or the drug addict that probably shouldn’t bring a child into the world. The moment progressives advocated to killing a baby during the 40th week of pregnancy, they lost the debate. Progressives have no one to blame but themselves, because what they want is roundly frowned upon by society.

Don’t think outright ban on abortions with the usual exceptions for rape, incest, and the severity mentally disabled is going to fly in too many states. Most all states have exemptions despite the leftist hyperventilating.
I am old enough to remember Punchy thinking 13 weeks was a reasonable time for a woman to decide if the unborn child should be executed. 13 weeks or the first trimester of life is under the 15 weeks that Mississippi abortion law covered which sent the Dems into a tizzy, lol. Surprisingly, Mississippi had the usual exceptions, save for the mentally disabled, but no one mentioned that. 15 weeks was a reasonable cut off date for Psul, until the Supreme Court put the issue where it belongs…in the hands of the local elected representatives of each State. The United States of America.
Thus, the Kansas referendum reveals the wisdom of our founding fathers once again…the Republic for which we stand.

While Darrell B’s opinion column in the Union states that guns and abortions are the winning issues for the Dems in the mid-terms, I do not. But, each of us has our own opinions. I still believe the Swamp Thing, aka, The Ragin’ Cagin’ when he was credited with the quip, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Darrell B and other live long Dems believe it is no longer the economy, but it’s Guns and Abortion, stupid.
I have yet to see any strong data that puts guns and abortions ahead of inflation, the economy, crime, a scandalous piss-poor public education system ahead of guns and abortions. Yes, there are single issue voters and party line voters and the Left needs desperately something to get excited about for the mid-terms. The enthusiasm gap between Left and Right (Dems vs Republicans if you prefer) is enormous this cycle.
Quality of Life issues include law and order, safe neighborhoods, a stable economy (inflation back to 2%) and good schools. There are just too many headwinds facing the Dems and Jon Q. public to overcome with Guns and Abortions. Time will tell in 100 days or so.
Speaking about Law and Order, some will simply flip SCOTUS the bird for political purposes, law or no law.

“Yet, there’s nothing new about a late summer ‘reassessment’ of midterm assumptions. In fact, like clockwork, the out-party right about now starts to fret that their advantage is slipping, while the in-party sees green shoots springing from a barren landscape. Or, as Washington Examiner’s David Drucker wrote on Twitter recently: “Midterm cycles since ’06 have certain rhythm: 1) Maybe POTUS’ party’ll avoid losses. 2) Things look good for out party. 3) Things look REALLY good for out party. 4) Hold on, maybe POTUS’ party won’t lose as many seats as thought. 5) Could POTUS’ party avoid wipeout? 6) WIPEOUT.”

Re-visiting monkeypox/Kansas vote:
From the latest issue of the Down-Load from MIT Technology Review-
Jessica Hamzelou article on monkeypox vaccine:
“The global outbreak of monkeypox has so far led to more than 24,000 cases in over 80 countries, and the World Health Organization has warned that the window of opportunity to contain the disease and prevent it from becoming endemic outside Africa is rapidly closing. Vaccines represent a potentially crucial measure.”
Never pointed out that the CDC sure was on top of preventing this outbreak by counseling gays to keep it in their pants for at least a month. And gays, being the considerate folks they are, complied willingly. OK, that laugher is out of the way now. Of course the gay guys didn’t do that. They didn’t even consider doing that. It’s THEIR life and they will live it the way they want. Just like all of the small businesses, restaurants & churches did when the CDC told those folks to shut down everything in 2020, 2021. Jessica never pointed out that the CDC is allowing this new “pandemic” to proliferate in the U.S. without issuing any particularly useful constraints.
And, under The Must-Reads:
“1. Kansas has overwhelmingly voted to protect abortion rights
It’s a significant victory for pro-choice groups in the conservative state. (BBC)”
Actually, not a significant victory – it merely upholds what is already existing in the Kansas Constitution. Not surprising that the Brits (BBC) missed this one since they DON’T HAVE a single-document constitution. And yet, MIT, of all people, should know that. Unless you have moved Lexington & Concord recently to Rhode Island. Maybe I missed that.
“5. We’re making progress in beating HIV
It’ll take time and money, but experts are optimistic that the virus is under control. ”
About time – only been 40 years. Didn’t HIV start out the same way as monkeypox – only affected gay guys? Why hasn’t the CDC issued warnings to gays to keep it in their pants for at least a month? You know, like the CDC did to everyo… Wait, didn’t we just go over that recently?

re: Kansas referendum.
Like Scott O, I never bothered to check the Kansas scene out. Heard there was a referendum to alter/eliminate the wording of the Kansas State Constitution. That was what the big deal was over.
I would not put the Kansas referendum as a game changer for the Democrat Party. Why?First, because while the proposed change in the state constitution got the vote out, it is now done and settled. The referendum will not be on the ballot in the general in November. Thus, will the Dems (and others) turn out in the general in the same numbers without abortion on the ballot? Will the same urgency for the political party known as ‘the face of abortion’ have the same enthusiasm in the head to head races come November?
Second, there is no second.
Third, Kansas, despite being known as the flattest state in the Union, is not the flattest state in the Union. Thus, there is no third.
