“Inside every progressive is a totalitarian screaming to get out.” David Horowitz re harassment of Justice Kavanaugh at DC restaurant.

George Rebane

Illinois Gov Pritzker typified the profound ignorance that most (all?) leftwing politicians have about guns, ‘gun violence’, and the effect of existing gun regulations.  In signing a law banning the sale and possession ‘ghost guns’ (AR-15 style untraceable componentized semi-automatic rifles) he made this audacious claim that was not rebutted by any of the media; to wit, “… even our revolutionaries did not use assault rifles, they used muskets.”  The idiot governor has no idea that muskets were the assault guns of the 18th century.

[7jul22 update]  Over 550 colleges have hired for-profit education vendors for delivering their online programs under the schools’ names.  The students seldom know that their courses are delivered by employees of companies like 2U instead of the universities’ academics.  It’s an attractive fire-and-forget source of revenues for the schools that get 20% of online ‘bootcamp’ tuitions and 40% of semester course tuitions from the vendors.  Bootcamps go for upwards of $10K, and semester courses for more than $60K.  Modern school daze. (more here)

The Victims of Communism Museum in Washington opened last month.  It “unsparingly illuminates the most murderous ideology of modern times.”  The museum was funded by donors and the governments of Hungary, Poland, Estonia, and Latvia.  Communist regimes have killed well over 100 million of their own citizens, and today 1.5 billion people still live under communism.  Unfortunately, more countries, including our own, today seek to increase their governments’ role in “abolishing private property and controlling the means of production and distribution of goods and services.”  “Under the pretense of classless, egalitarian society, Communist regimes rely on force, use brutality, and repress speech, religion, assembly, and all rights and freedoms.”  (more here)

[8jul22 update]  The Democrats are desperately trying to divert the country’s attention from the ongoing foreign policy mess, the open border crisis, exploding crime rates, soaring inflation, shelves empty of critical goods, historically high gasoline prices, ongoing Covid muddle, fetid cities filled with vagrant encampments, dysfunctional public schools, pending recession, and announced policies guaranteed make each of these social catastrophes worse.  The only diversions they have left now is to blanket the country with lies about J6, SCOTUS, and “the best economy in our history”.

Abortion is a latent right, even though it isn’t in the Constitution, so argue all pro-abortionists and progressives.  A favorite supportive citation is Madison’s inclusion of the 9th Amendment in which he wanted to make sure that unenumerated rights would henceforth not be excluded.  The big problem this argument launched is who decides what the next unenumerated right is, and how many of these are there waiting to be ‘discovered’ and codified by the politicians who happen to then have control the government gun.  We now have a culture in which new rights are immaculately conceived daily out of thin air, rights that inevitably reduce freedoms for the rest of us.

[9jul22 update]  The dollar will be destroyed to pay off or at least allow the Treasury to keep borrowing to service the $23T+ national debt held by the public ($30T+ total).  This has been covered many times over the years in these pages (e.g. here and here).  Now the Mises Institute is also putting out papers that warn us of this (here).  Destruction will occur through sky-high inflation which allows the debt to be serviced in ever cheaper nominal dollars.  As I see it, the real news here is that we Americans are simply too stupid to be concerned, let alone do anything about it at the ballot box.  Witness the comment stream below.

Poetry more relevant today than ever to illuminate the upcoming mid-term election.

ProgressivePropaganda_2021

[11jul22 update]  Repeal the 2nd Amendment is the latest brainchild of communist filmmaker Michael Moore (here), who proposes adoption of a 28th Amendment that would explicitly do that, and make civilian ownership and use of firearms a joke that would please only those Americans born with serfdom in their veins, aka Democrat voters.

[12jul22 update]  So how to interpret the Trump/Biden polls for 2024.  Depending on the poll and its qnaire, it’s hard to really tell what the legitimate backing is for either man’s 2024 candidacy. (more here)  I estimate that half of the right and leftwingers are contras – the rightwingers wanting Biden to run, and the leftwingers wanting Trump to run on the theory that either man would be the loser in any feasible match-up.  Me?  I definitely want Biden to run again, and Trump to leave the field and lose his ‘the 2020 election was stolen’, no matter the merits of the argument.  So now you know how people like me would respond to pollsters, but that doesn’t help knowing that the, say, pro-Trump respondents would also include a hefty share of the man’s political devotees.

‘Bumblebrain bows out before 2022 election’ predicts Athena Thorne of PJ Media while crowing that she is the first to make this prediction (here).  Sorry to burst the bubble of this Jenny-come-lately, but RR readers had already had this discussion more than a year ago and even entered into a monied bet in July 2021 on exactly when we would get a new president (here)

After Paul lets us in on his solution to the ‘assault rifle’ problem, he can tell us how to deal with ‘assault traffic cones’. They can be used repeatedly to kill.
It’s not the weapons, folks – it’s the folks.
We don’t have a fire arms problem we have a societal problem. But very few want to deal with it.

    Paul Emery.
Because you are a fellow human being that was not aborted and you deserve all the dignity a fellow pilgrim is warranted, I will respond to your reply to mer.
I have posted polling and surveys well before SCOTUS returned Roe to the State governments where one’s local representatives can decide abortion rules vis their local elected officials. The question of abortion limits/rules differs from person to person.
The bumper sticker slogans of the far left in nut shelled as “my body my choice” and “right to choose”. “ Keep your male hands off my body”. Far enough.
But, my good man who was fastened in the womb by our Creator, there are move nuisances that bumper sticker slogans. The majority off folks say they are for abortion. But, when broken down to weeks or months, one gets a vastly different picture. You yourself once said you are ok with the first 13 weeks to terminate the pregnancy. It’s alright if you or I have changed our minds as more facts are presented. PS: God does not make junk. We are wonderfully made.
The right to abortion in Ohio from their laws just pasted means all nine months, including the moment of birth. The second of birth. Perhaps even post-birth.
The right to abortion in many Western European countries means 13 weeks. The Netherlands and Sweden is 15 weeks if memory serves me correctly. Liberal France? 13 weeks. British? Germany? All around the end of the first trimester.
The polls for years in the USA have remained consistent, with so me ups and downs. A small majority has been for pro-abortion. Now it’s about 60%. When asked about late term abortion, the huge majority of our fellow citizens are Devi its opposed. Like 80% consider late term abortion wretched and akin to murder. You yourself. I assume, are not advocating killing the unborn child during the last month(s) of pregnancy. The unborn child has unique DNA, fingerprints, lungs, heartbeat and can survive outside the womb.
BTW, Fetus, from the Latin foetus, an unborn offspring of a mammal, in particular an unborn human baby more than eight weeks after conception. Surely you do not cry out for a woman’s right to choose when the fetus (unborn human child) is that far along in development. To me, that is pro-death. Murder. Killing of the most vulnerable among us.
“Baby killers”, just like the Lefty asshats that spit on and called our returning young men from Vietnam. Baby killers, spit, spit, baby killers! Those are YOUR people, the kind you like to hang with.
So yes, many polls claim 54-56-60% of folks support abortion…..in the first trimester, some 15 weeks like Mississippi. That is all you got. During the 4th-6th month, support falls below 50%, down into the 40s. Months 7,8, 9…..well, it is simply to horrifying to even dwell on. Baby killers they be. Baby killers. I am pro-life. No apologies, no changing my mind. If you are for day of birth execution, then that is on your conscience.
The polls that have Biden’s numbers below Trump’s lowest numbers are polls that have traced the same question for years of since they started tracking….not RCP. RCP is behind and will catch up.

Don’t inflict on us your religious beliefs Bill when it comes to making laws. You have the perfect right to live by any religious inspirations that may inhabit you but don’t force those, through the power of law, on us that don’t share those beliefs Americans have freedom FROM religion in case you haven’t heard.

So, in your world free of religion, at what age (in weeks after conception) is an unborn bambino safe? All ye, all ye, outs in free?
In my world free of religion, somewhere between 10 and 15 weeks sounds about right. Not that I’d want any fetus sharing my DNA meeting that fate… and older than that, I would hope a hospital ethics committee including an advocate for the unborn would have a say, in much the same way a separation of conjoined twins might be handled.

So in your view Don and Bill a woman taking a day after pill should be against the law and subject to whatever penalty is subscribed in that law.

I would never force my beliefs on anyone. I would fight to defend your right for freedom to practice any way you wish or not at all. Same with voting. You and I have the freedom to do vote for whomever is on the ballot or not at all. BTW, I did not vote last month. Like thousands of others in this county, I was not inspired or choose not to vote in the recent elections. No I teerst in the least. I was going to vote against Marginally Rational wacko, but I never opened the ballot. Had much more important things going down at the time.
As far as the law goes, it is the people who vote for our local State Assembly and State Senators who make our laws. If those laws are in violation of our Constitution, then they are tossed out by the Supreme Court of the US, the Article 3 judges. BTW, a bit of trivia. When the Constitution was written, the only Article 3 judges were the Supreme Court. Washington offered Patrick Henry the Secretary of State position, but he refused. Then George Washington offer Patrick Henry the position of Supreme Court judge, but he refused that too. A healthy distrust of the Federal Government burned in his breastplate before and after the Revolutionary War, aka, the War against the Monarchy.
The recent SCOTUS rulings for the Washington high school coach who prayed alone on the 50 yard line after each game and the religious school in a small New England state that SCOTUS ruled in favor of had a common theme:
That theme is the government cannot discriminate against religion. Your freedom from religion is your protected right, but no discrimination allowed against your beliefs or religious beliefs either.
Government cannot cross into religion, but religious persons are free to entet into government. The separation of church and state is a one way street, prohibiting the Government from touching religion, but religions are not prohibited from government.
As a good example, during the worse of the pandemic lockdowns, court after court, state and federal, ruled closing churches was unconstitutional.
Newsom was warned by the Court to back off his limiting the attendance of religious worship more than once. He gave the middle finger to the highest Court and disregarded the Constitution. Finally, the Court made their message crystal clean and prohibited any official, local, regional, or statewide in the State of California from restrictions on religious services. California was the only State to have a statewide ban on how and when people worship during the pandemic. We were singled out.
The framers of the Constitution were quote familiar with pandemics, the Black Plague, and other epidemics throughout history, being men who studied history for any and all examples to guide their crafting of both the DoI and COTUS. Pandemic or not pandemic, lockdowns or no lockdowns, government is not to touch or restrict or limit attendance hours, or frequency of the right to worship. The right of the individual to practice and e brace religious freedom trumps Gavin Newsom, Dr. Fauci, or any local or state government official, elected or appointed.
Because someone may be a devout religious practitioner (worshiper/believer) does not mean their voices cannot be heard or discriminated against by government. We are not a monarchy, a authoritarian government, nor a Marxist or dictatorship. All Communist governments restrict/prohibit the masses for freedom to worship as they please. No one is to come between man and his God.
Paul, read the First Amendment. Is speech mentioned first? Is press? Freedom to assemble/associate with those you choose Nope. Religious freedom is a very ingrained, complicated, and misunderstood factor in the founding of our nation. Most fail to realize how religion is woven through our founding, if not the primary reason during the 1600s and 1730’s especially up through to the Armed Conflict against King George and to the present.
No worries, Paul. No one is going to make you attend a Anglican or EpiscopalIan service today in GV or any church in Nevada City.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

    RE Gregory 1:39
You know Gregory I pretty much agree with you. I’d go for 16 months but that’s a minor difference and yes some kind of process if an abortion is desired after that. Four months is a good length of time to make a decision. I also think this should be written into a federal law so it’s clearly understood and universal.

16 months is a year and 4 months… an awfully long time to decide when to kill an infant.
The process after 15 weeks I was discussing was not to enable a “desire” for abortion… it’s to enable a medically needed abortion, truly for the health of the mother or to stop risking the health of the mother for an infant who cannot survive or some other dire circumstance. NOT a desire to stop the pregnancy because the mother (can I use such a word undefinable as it is by the newest Justice in the country?) just doesn’t want to continue.
15 weeks is about the length of time to miss “the quickening”, if one cares about traditional limits, and is codified by the Mississippi law recently upheld by SCOTUS.
Your Progressive buddies think anytime before birth (and a wee bit more), you know, the Roe decision. That’s the horse you had hitched your wagon to.

Of course you have never stated that your personally ok for 3rd trimester abortion on demand or infanticide. You, we, are now old school. 70’s thinking. The right to abortion meant first trimester and always the standing rule for rape and incest.
The only time I recall you being specific on the topic (and refreshingly no rope-a-dope), you said 13 weeks. That was we thought was settled law, a right created iut of thi air by a wrong decision by SCOTUS 60 years ago. I live with my regrets.
Things have changed Paul. The earth has moved under your feet. all of our feet. Gregory said it best. “Thats the horse you hitched your wagon to.” Not your beliefs, but the Democrat Party on 2022’s belifs. When they say abortion, they mean no restrictions, no reason needed ever, up to the moment of birth to decide.
BTW, the Dem’s new cry about “something??” pregnancies is hogwwash, a BOLD FACED LIE. They are talking about tubular pregnancies. I had a girlfriend who got a tubular pregnancy. Sperm makes it way to the fallopian tube (sp?) and catches an egg coming down. Stays in the tube, a real risk to the mother. BUT, the future baby has zero chance of survi al. Zero. Science has not been able to tranplant or keep “it” alive. Thus. it is not an abortion of a viable living creature…it is a medical procedure to remove material from her tubes. Not an abortion and not restricted.
Paul, perhaps you should venture a peek into 2022 lefty platforms and party planks. Defund police…er..rethink policing, open borders, silence on black gang shootings, war mongering, New Ecomonic Theory, suppression of contrary views, a distain for State’s Rights, ad infinitum.
Paul, do you realize that poll floating around that you objected to (pro-life biased poll) fingered you in the overwheling majority. You, me, moderates, conservatives, blue collar, blacks especially, educated and uneducated all agree that late term abortion is wrong. Feels wrong. Not who most Americans are.
Your 15 week abortion is not what the Democrat Party considers abortion.
You, by association, are stuck with the unenviable task of defending full term abortions. Its that broadbush that works on both sides.
i will answer your contraception question after giving it some thought. Haven’t read one article about it or given it any thought.
i once had a very interesting discussion with a nice pro-lifer about his dire medical condition with no effective tratment. He said that stem cells from fetuses sre showing ppromising results according to Stanford Medical new treatments. could save his life…but he had a moral dilemma. Hard choices when things get really real.
Never asked him what he was going to do. Nor did I give him my two cents worth. If the stem cells were from the imbellical cord…but no. He died in time…before his time. Never knew if he had embryo stem cell treatments. Its between him, his conscience, and Divine Providence.

Zakaria also expressed similar concerns regarding Germany’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russia as President Donald Trump did during a 2018 NATO summit. During the summit, Trump told NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that the pipeline makes Germany “totally controlled” and “captive to Russia”.
“Western countries are still not treating this challenge as a paramount priority. The Netherlands has a huge gas field, but it is actually slowing down production. The chi coms are losing the handle on the prols –
Since April, four rural banks in China’s central Henan province have frozen millions of dollars worth of deposits, threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of customers in an economy already battered by draconian Covid lockdowns.
Anguished depositors have staged several demonstrations in the city of Zhengzhou, the provincial capital of Henan, over the past two months, but their demands have invariably fallen on deaf ears.
On Sunday, more than 1,000 depositors from across China gathered outside the Zhengzhou branch of the country’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China, to launch their largest protest yet, more than half a dozen protesters told CNN.
The demonstration is among the largest China has seen since the pandemic, with domestic travel limited by various Covid restrictions on movement. Last month, Zhengzhou authorities even resorted to tampering with the country’s digital Covid health-code system to restrict the movements of depositors and thwart their planned protest, sparking a nationwide outcry.

Forget Paul’s solution to gun violence.- we have Michael Moore to the rescue with his well thought out plan.
Just make it a “right” to not have to suffer from gun violence. Some thug points a gun at you, you just pull out a piece of paper showing him your new ‘right’. Why didn’t we think of this earlier?
Of course there’s a few other pesky details:
About 80% of all civilian firearms will have to be seized.
Almost all 3D printers and most all metal lathes, mills and other machine tools will have to be seized. Shouldn’t be a problem.
In the comments we find an appalling lack of anyone pointing out the insanity of this proposal. I realize the proposal will go nowhere but it shows the inherent stupidity and ignorance of the gun grabbers. And they are still allowed to vote.
No wonder our country is headed down the tubes.

bjr 1159am – Junior, what you missed is that not ending your italics with a < / i > tag (here expanded) continues ALL comments thereafter in italics – not very nice. I had to fix it for you. So do get very worried about your italics so I don’t have to clean up after you. Thanks.

The shadow prez is making the wrong choices at every turn and insulting the key community in much of the US hence the doldrums in creepy grampa joes approval from hispanics then there is the fact that they hate latinx as a descriptor! –
First Lady Jill Biden butchered the pronunciation of “bodega” and asserted that the Hispanic community is “as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio” while speaking at the Latinx IncluXion Luncheon in the Texas city Monday.

Thank you Dr. Jill Biden, Ed.D. for clarifying that Democrats think Hispanics are “unique” like tacos.
However, I think you’re confused. We Texans love our bodegas.

Don & Gregory. Good morning, rise and shine.
Hispanic Community ‘as Unique as Breakfast Tacos’ ain’t nothing. Remember when Wikileaks released the Hillary campaign’s top dogs referring to former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson as “Taco Bowl.” Then Trump immediately starting eating big delicious Taco Bowls smiling in delight with cameras zoning in on him, lol. Fun times.

George: “…and Trump to leave the field and lose his ‘the 2020 election was stolen’, no matter the merits of the argument.”
I would agree, but if Trump were to be the nominee in 24 he would get my vote over anything the Dems would run.
We know that it won’t be Biden for the Dems. Paul and the Dem apologists are using the ‘age’ angle.
Xi and his boys will have a pow-wow about that and let the DNC know who they should run.
