George Rebane

Quietech in Grass Valley is a very capable local computer service store owned and run by Melissa Hannebrink.  The Rebanes have been satisfied customers since Melissa’s retired father established the business.  This morning Melissa sent her customers an email that begins with, “I am writing you today with a very heavy heart. As I have shared with some of you, here at Quietech we have endured daily abuse over the past 10 months. By enforcing basic COVID guidelines, there are some who feel their rights are being infringed upon. In addition, we have some who walk through our doors and are so disappointed to find that they aren’t next in line, or that they can’t have their device fixed on-the-spot, that they have full-blown tantrums. These unfulfillable expectations, in addition to the pressures of COVID, seem to be creating the perfect storm for abuse, shockingly even from some of our longest-standing clients. This morning, we had an incident that went too far. We decided to temporarily close to regroup, although the last thing we want is to close our doors and stop helping those in our community who need us.”  As the country sinks into its woke-powered autocracy, we will be reminded more frequently than ever that a gossamer thin veil separates civilization from barbarians at the gate.

Welcome to the After-Trump Era.  Victor Davis Hanson explains the matter to us in his latest commentary.  There he points out, “During the Trump Age, the president was supposedly responsible for every death from COVID-19. Now, the media report that career scientists and health administrators in the federal government, especially at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, were largely to blame for past slow testing, and were tardy and lax in apprising the nation of the infectious threat. … In the new age, expect the media and government to suddenly resent any pushback against a sitting president. Questions about the Biden family’s past multimillion-dollar influence-peddling overseas or Biden’s cognitive ability can no longer be asked. … None will compare the recurring violence of Antifa or Black Lives Matter to that of Islamic terrorists. None will compare Biden, who dismissed Antifa as a mere “idea,” to Mussolini or the Nazis. Any retired officer who smears the president, we will be reminded, would violate the Uniform Code of Military Justice. … The media, Silicon Valley, Wall Street, Hollywood, top retired military brass, corporate America, universities, and professional sports are all recalibrating the truth for our Year One. … In about a month, they will have it down. And soon, we won’t even be able to tell the old reality from the new.”

[29jan21 update] Danny Pearl’s killer is set free by Pakistani courts (more here and here).  Pearl, WSJ’s South Asia bureau chief, was kidnapped and beheaded in 2002.  Danny’s parents, who have been fighting the Pakistani justice system for almost twenty years, stated “Today’s decision is a complete travesty of justice” that “puts in danger journalists everywhere, we urge the U.S. government to take all necessary actions under the law to correct this injustice.”  RR has covered this Islamist travesty in previous posts here and here.

[30jan21 update]  Ms Hannebrink has surprisingly taken exception to my above Quietech entry.  Her remarks with my reply may be found @1058am in the comment stream.  I find it remarkable that she seems to think that I ascribed a political leaning to her remarks, especially when I explicitly declined to do so.

So the lead never trumper turns out to be a pedophile –
John Weaver, a co-founder of the Lincoln Project, has been accused of sending explicit messages to nearly a dozen young men, offering them career advice and jobs in exchange for sexual favors.
Weaver, who formerly worked with the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), was accused by 21 men of sending unwarranted messages, one who stated that he began receiving messages when he was 14 years old, according to the New York Times.

No, Don B. Not a pedophile. Just a person who likes young men, some of which are under the age of consent… when it’s criminal.
A pedophile is someone who lusts after prepubescent kids.

    Ephebophilia……
Who would have imagined there would be such an extensive vocabulary surrounding the predilection.

“ Ephebophilia is the primary sexual interest in mid-to-late adolescents, generally ages 15 to 19.[1] The term was originally used in the late 19th to mid 20th century.”

    fishy
If folk wouldn’t misapply pedophilia to folks who just want a relationship with a particular sexually mature adolescent, it wouldn’t be a big problem to have a name for it.
When I was 18 it was referred to as “cradle robbing”… not to be pushed too far.

How about we start by eliminating personal attacks and name calling and just talk about ideas and try to find things to agree on?

The bureaucrats in Brussels have failed like all the leftists just like emperor gavin. Here is something to ponder, if we recall emperor gavin will a hard core socialist blm pandering drone take his place? –
“The Irish did not know about it. The Irish government, ourselves and the U.S. government – everyone was shocked,” one minister told the Telegraph.
“There were a variety of things set out that were not needed. Things moved very rapidly. There was a paper drawn up with actions to respond, but thankfully it all got stood down,” a government source told the newspaper, which heard that the government considered using the European Commission, ditching some of its own concesson to the bloc on Northern Ireland, and even arranging airlifts to circumvent a potential blockade.
“The European project has been found horribly wanting by the pandemic. The crisis has brutally exposed its deep faultlines of massive, ponderous bureaucracy and decisions taken for EU protectionism and corporate advantage rather than the welfare of its own citizens, who are now rightfully furious with their inept political masters,” commented Mark Francois, a senior Tory Brexiteer, on the ugly saga, which he took as proof that the British government must consider redrawing or outright replacing its deal with the EU on Northern Ireland.

Paul – “…and just talk about ideas and try to find things to agree on?”
Really Paul? We’ve tried this before and it always degenerates into you badgering one or more posters with a constant demand for yes or no answers to a preposterous ‘assumption’ that you’ve fabricated.
And all the while you duck questions asked of you.
But I’ll start off: I think chocolate ice cream tastes good.

And nothing but crickets and cicadas about the mass extinction of jobs at Biden’s hand.
Is Biden going to get all those electric cars and trucks for free? Which windmill is going to power that fleet?

“… just talk about ideas and try to find things to agree on?“
It is not imperative we try to find things to agree on nor should it be. You express how you see things, I express how I see things. We all express openly or candidly how we see things. If, by chance, there is some intersectionality, then that is a by-product, not the goal.
    “and just talk about ideas….”
Some folks talk about events, some folks talk about ideas. Sometimes the culminate effect of events forms one’s idea, sometimes the idea is reinforced by ideas.
Bottomline: “How about we start by eliminating personal attacks and name calling and just talk about ideas and try to find things to agree on “
What a friggin control freak. How about we talk about anything we please that is on topic?

    Correction @ 5:46 am
“sometimes the idea is reinforced by ideas” should read ‘sometimes the IDEA is reinforced by EVENTS.
My, my. If I did not know better, the person who has bragged on these boards (twice) that the only reason he comes over to RR is to stir the pot and, to paraphrase, to poke them in the eye with a sharp stick.
If I did not know better, I would say some boxer is all punched out. Temporarily of course. Probably just trying to catch his breathe, get his wobbly legs back under him, and stop seeing double vision… between rounds.

Maybe this should go under ‘Speech and Sedition in 2021’. I throw it all under “He (Hayden Williams) took a punch for all of us.” Opening paragraphs :
    A TSUNAMI OF HATE
Everybody agrees that our country is in crisis – and agrees that it is the worst crisis since the Civil War. But at the same time, we tell ourselves a comforting tale about the source of the crisis that perpetuates the problem instead of providing a path to ending it. We say our politics are “divisive” and talk about “unity and healing” as though that would miraculously be achieved if everybody stopped … what? Disagreeing? All politics is divisive. That’s the healthy basis of our constitutional order: the freedom to disagree. To suppress disagreement, to outlaw it – as many Democrats and their Big Tech and media allies – are demanding these days, is to end democracy as we know it.
The problem is not that we disagree. We are not suffering as a nation from healthy disagreement. We are suffering from a Tsunami of Hate emanating from the Democrat Party that seeks to demonize, criminalize and extinguish dissent from the 75 million supporters of Donald Trump. It is now official Washington dogma that to question an election result – something the congressional Democrats have done in the face of every Republican presidential victory since 2000 – is now “insurrection” and “domestic terrorism,” or the incitement thereto, and needs to be prosecuted and suppressed.
You can’t have a democracy if this is the attitude of a party that controls all three branches of government, is enabled by a corrupt and compliant media, and is determined not just to defeat, but to humiliate, destroy and expunge from the record an ex-president who is supported by a greater segment of the American electorate than any American leader before him.
There is Democrat-sponsored legislation pending that would prevent any public building or artifact, even a “bench” from being named after the 45th president of the United States. There is a farcical witch-trial to impeach the same villain even though he has left office and is now a private citizen. There is even Democrat talk of stripping Trump of his pension, despite the fact that he gave his entire $1.6 million salary as president to the American people – something no president before him has done. If ever there was a public lynching, short of stringing the victim from the nearest tree – and there are no lack of leftwing calls for that – the Democrats’ unrelentingly vindictive assault on the defeated Donald Trump down to the last petty detail is it.“
