[Alex Berenson on the real skinny behind Covid-19 reporting.  Short book and very much worth a read if you’re interested in debating the pandemic, how it’s reported, and various response policies (here).  Apologies for letting the last sandbox languish a bit too long; we're working through a family medical emergency here.  gjr]

I didn’t support Measure S Don . You know that. We’ve been through that before. It was poorly written and not a workable plan. You created, supported and represented Measure W which was a waste of taxpayers money. When did you discover it was going to crash and burn and lose by 20 points?

“If you want a hot take about the Middle East, Raphael Badani is your man.
As a Newsmax “Insider” columnist, he has thoughts about how Iraq needs to rid itself of Iranian influence to attract investment and why Dubai is an oasis of stability in a turbulent region. His career as a “geopolitical risk consultant and interactive simulation designer” and an “international relations senior analyst” for the Department of Labor have given him plenty of insights about the Middle East. He’s printed those insights at a range of conservative outlets like the Washington Examiner, RealClear Markets, American Thinker, and The National Interest.
Unfortunately for the outlets who published his articles and the readers who believed them, Raphael Badani does not exist.
His profile photos are stolen from the blog of an unwitting San Diego startup founder. His LinkedIn profile, which described him as a graduate of George Washington and Georgetown, is equally fictitious.
Badani is part of a network of at least 19 fake personas that has spent the past year placing more than 90 opinion pieces in 46 different publications. The articles heaped praise on the United Arab Emirates and advocated for a tougher approach to Qatar, Turkey, Iran and its proxy groups in Iraq and Lebanon.
On Monday, Twitter suspended Badani’s account along with 15others after The Daily Beast shared the results of its investigation into the network for violating the company’s “policies on platform manipulation and spam.”
“Using technology, human review, and partnerships with researchers and other independent organizations studying these issues, we work to identify platform manipulation on our service and take action,” a Twitter spokesperson told The Daily Beast in a statement. “As is standard, if we have reasonable evidence to attribute any activity to a state-backed information operation, we’ll disclose them—following thorough investigation—to our public archive.”
“This vast influence operation highlights the ease with which malicious actors can exploit the identity of real people, dupe international news outlets, and have propaganda of unknown provenance legitimized through reputable media,” Marc Owen Jones, an assistant professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar who first noticed suspicious posts by members of the network, told The Daily Beast. “It’s not just fake news we need to be wary of, but fake journalists.”

Mary Trump book cleared for publication, now another expose,
“According to people familiar with the project, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff—who was previously seen by the first lady as a loyal confidante and helped plan President Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration in Washington, D.C.—will release a tell-all, Melania and Me, on Sept. 1.
People with knowledge of the project say the content of the book is largely negative and that the manuscript heavily trashes the first lady.
Winston Wolkoff previously worked for Vogue editrix and artistic director of Condé Nast Anna Wintour, who nicknamed her “General Winston” during her stint as the magazine’s special events director producing the celebrity-packed Met Gala.”

CDC: After 10-Week Decline In COVID-19 Deaths, It May Soon No Longer Be An Epidemic
“Based on death certificate data, the percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia, influenza or COVID-19 (PIC) decreased from 9.0% during week 25 to 5.9% during week 26, representing the tenth week of a declining percentage of deaths due to PIC,” according to the CDC’s website.
Fear over an impending second wave of cases and subsequent deaths due to COVID-19 has generated caution in reopening businesses. In the parts of the country that have reopened, however, death rates haven’t widely spiked.
Despite the United States reaching its highest single-day surge of new COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, the death rate continues to remain stagnant, relatively unaffected by the increase in diagnoses. Cases have increased for week 26 in most regions nationally, but still remain lower than peaks in March and April.
While policymakers toy with the idea of a second shutdown, the CDC is reporting a lower death rate even while COVID-19 cases are recently on the rise.”

At this point I am paying attention to primarily the delegate count polling and average job approval polling. Here’s a monthly assessment of Trump from Rasmussen for you to ponder.
    Trump Approval Index Month-by-Month
Trump’s Monthly Approval Drops in June
    Monday, July 06, 2020
When tracking President Trump’s job approval on a daily basis, people sometimes get so caught up in the day-to-day fluctuations that they miss the bigger picture. To look at the longer-term trends, Rasmussen Reports compiles the numbers on a full-month basis, and the results for Trump’s presidency can be seen in the graphics below.
As racial unrest and the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic continue, the president earned a monthly job approval of 45% in June, down from 47% in May and his high of 49% for the year to date in February. In 2019, Trump’s monthly approval ran from a low of 44% in January to a high of 50% in April. He ended the year at 49%. Fifty-four percent (54%) disapproved of the president’s job performance this June, up two points from the month before.

    BT 7:55 – Don’t forget ‘master’ bedroom!
Let’s go through the dictionary and throw out all the words that trigger the poor little dears.
    auction.
Gone – evokes the slave auctions.
    house.
Gone – evokes the separation of the ‘house’ negro vs the ‘field’ negro.
    cotton.
Gone – both the word and the plant and all products made from the plant. Too much bad history.
    Isn’t this fun?
We can play this little game forever until there’s about 3 words left in the English language we’re allowed to say. Although I’m not sure we’ll even be allowed to speak English.
We can still say ‘niggardly’ because it’s old Norse and predates the later similar word by centuries.
    But not peanut gallery.
And after we’ve done all that, we’ll have reached ‘equity’ and we’ll all go off to the seashore.

Trump is now down by 19 in Gallup’s latest poll.
Here is their analysis on his current status in the polls. Massive decline in a month. Looking grim.
“In early May, Trump’s approval tied his personal best at 49% — before it sank amid nationwide protests over racial injustice after the death of George Floyd. Now his approval rating stands just three percentage points above his personal low of 35%, registered on four separate occasions in 2017.
The latest results are based on a June 8-30 Gallup poll. While Trump’s overall job approval rating is essentially unchanged from the prior May 28-June 4 poll, it does show some improvement among Republicans, from 85% to 91%. However, the current poll also indicates the president’s approval rating has dropped among independents, from 39% to 33%, as well as among Democrats, from 5% to 2%.”

Is Trump either stupid or a liar when he states “99 percent” of them (virus cases) were “totally harmless.”
One percent of 3,000,000 cases (estimate by the end of the day) is 30,000. How does he come up with that number when there have been 130,000 deaths as of today. Is this an example of the dumbing down of America that you refer to?
“President Trump dismissed the severity of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States over the weekend, downplaying the impact of the disease and saying that while the testing of tens of millions of American had identified many cases, “99 percent” of them were “totally harmless.”
His remarks about a virus that has already claimed nearly 130,000 lives were perplexing. The coronavirus is surging across the Sunbelt states and has rebounded in California. At least 2.8 million Americans have been infected, and public health officials have said the real number of infections may be 10 times higher.”

‘Is Strzok Memo the Rosetta Stone of Obamagate?’
“Andrew McCarthy at National Review speculates that “Strzok’s notes were taken when someone later briefed him about the White House meeting that Strzok did not attend.” The New York Post concludes that the Strzok memo is “plainly Strzok’s notes of FBI chief Jim Comey’s account.” Certainly if Strzok were briefed by someone in attendance, it was most likely Comey. But Ivan Pentchoukov of The Epoch Times floats a much more interesting idea about how Strzok came to be in possession of the facts he recorded in the memo.
“The on-the-fly nature of the notes suggest that he was either physically present or listened in on a conference call,” Pentchoukov speculates.
Well, the Washington Post reports that “Strzok’s lawyer told The Fact Checker that Strzok did not attend the meeting,” and then suggests that probably means “the notes may recount what someone else — perhaps Comey — told him about the meeting.” Yes, maybe so, but there is good reason not to skate over the possibility that, as Pentchoukov puts it, Strzok “listened in” on the conversation.
This is indeed heady stuff, as it is beyond reason to think that Strzok was an invited participant. The last thing anyone at that meeting would want is an independent account of what was said as they planned how to entrap one of the incoming president’s closest aides. Yet that does not eliminate the chance that Strzok benefited from some kind of surveillance technique to eavesdrop on the conversation, either with the knowledge of one person in the room or possibly with none. Of course it is scary to think that the FBI was wiretapping the White House, but they did it to Trump Tower, so who knows?“
    https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2020/07/06/is_strzok_memo_the_rosetta_stone_of_obamagate_143628.html#2
I usually shy away from pure speculation. However, the nagging question remains. Why did Biden and Obama lie about the meeting and both lied about their first hand knowledge of the FBI’s investigation into Trump? The only plausible explanation I can think of is they knew they were doing wrong things…things not by the book. Why deny first hand knowledge of the operation when they were clearly involved? Why, why, why?

“Donald’s penchant for division, and uncertainty about our country’s future have created a perfect storm of catastrophes that no one is less equipped than my uncle to manage. His ability to control unfavorable situations by lying, spinning, and obfuscating has diminished to the point of impotence in the midst of the tragedies we are currently facing. His egregious and arguably intentional mishandling of the current catastrophe has led to a level of pushback and scrutiny that he’s never experienced before, increasing his belligerence and need for petty revenge as he withholds vital funding, personal protective equipment, and ventilators that your tax dollars have paid for from states whose governors don’t kiss his ass sufficiently.”
