[It’s remarkable how well these C19 utility functions perform in their ability to predict the statements – ranging from policies to pabulum – of the three cohorts today exhorting us to do this vs that.

C19utilitiesFor those comfortable with such models of the realworld, they compress a whole lot of explanatory power about the debate to loosen the lockdown. (more here).  gjr]

Latest idiot quote from our Stupid in Chief President:
“Don’t forget, we have more cases than anybody in the world,” Trump said. “But why? Because we do more testing. When you test, you have a case. When you test, you find something is wrong with people. If we didn’t do any testing, we would have very few cases.”
Unbelievable, George is this an example of “dumbst ” or whatever you call it?

    Daily Quotes
Tongue-in-cheek: “Looking back, it’s a good thing we closed everything but Planned Parenthood to save lives.” —Seth Dillon
Perspective: “We have 36.5 million unemployment claims since March. To understand the monstrosity of that number, consider: the worst week of all times before this was 695k. If you had that worst week of all times every week for an entire year — 52 in a row — that would be 36.1m.” —Austan Goolsbee
Wandering minds want to know: “What does marijuana have to do with the coronavirus? Cannabis is mentioned 68 times in Pelosi’s [stimulus] bill! She must have been high on something when she wrote it.” —Gary Bauer
For the record: “We are bailing out out liberal politicians who cannot live within their means and now we are asking Floridians to pay for the incompetence of governors like Andrew Cuomo.” —Sen. Rick Scott
The bottom line: “Vice President Biden is guilty of using government to go after a political opponent.” —Sen. Rand Paul
Observations: “I see the drip-drip crowd stressing that Flynn was supposedly involved in other crimes. It’s a bad defense. If true, the Obama admin [should] have prosecuted him on FARA charges. They didn’t. Instead they railroaded him to keep a rickety Russia investigation going.” —David Harsanyi
Demo-gogues: “These ridiculous conspiracy theories, on Obama — [Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron] Johnson wants to go after Biden and this Hunter Biden conspiracy theory, which came from the Russians, of all people. This is amazing to me. What alternative universe do they live in? Spending their time on discredited conspiracy theories, against Obama, against Biden.” —Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
Non compos mentis: “The unconfirmed, acting DNI using his position to criminalize routine intelligence work to help re-elect the president and obscure Russian intervention in our democracy would normally be the scandal here…” —Ben Rhodes
Braying jenny: “I can’t believe I have to write this sentence, but the president’s son-in-law doesn’t get to decide when the election is.” —Hillary Clinton spreading a ridiculous conspiracy theory
Frogs in boiling water: “Every time you go to school, you don’t go to class once and then graduate with a degree. You go for many days at a time, slowly adding layers and layers upon layers. And we use public events … to help contribute evidence to the analysis of power, which will help people realize how power is concentrated in the United States — which gives us a better foundation to challenge it and then paint and begin to establish alternative structures for a better world.” —Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Village idiot: “[Trump] wants to be reelected. He doesn’t even care how many people die. … The people he pretends to care about are the people he has the most disdain for. He could [sic] care less about them. They might like to tell themselves that or delude themselves, but he doesn’t care about them.” —Robert De Niro
And last… “The curve has LONG since been ‘flattened.’ It’s time to let people live a life of purpose.” —Steven Crowder

My my. We used to count recidivism rates in months. Now it’s minutes.
California man, 32, carjacks motorist 40 MINUTES after being released from prison early due to COVID-19.
    ——-
These are non violent offenders, they told us. No rapists, no robbers, no violence on record they told us.
‘Sex offenders among those released from New York jail to stop coronavirus spread’
“We weren’t told by anyone. I think good practice would be if you’re going to release convicted felons,” he said. “Some of them very violent, some of those level 3 sex offenders, you might want to give law enforcement the heads-up.”
The department told the station it made decisions on whom to release based on a “review of the underlying technical violation, not the original crime.”
“This significant action is being taken in response to a growing number of COVID-19 cases in local jails over the past few days and weeks,” DOCCS said.
“Our top priority remains the public health and safety of New Yorkers during this global public health emergency and this measure will further protect a vulnerable population from contracting and transmitting this infectious disease.”

Dozens of Rikers inmates arrested again after coronavirus release
“More than 100 inmates cut loose from incarceration on Rikers Island over coronavirus concerns in late March have had run-ins with the law since being released, The Post has learned.
The roughly 110 inmates have accounted for 190 arrests since the pandemic took hold of the Big Apple, according to police.
Of those arrests, 45 — or roughly one-quarter — were for burglaries, helping drive the 43-percent spike in break-ins over the last month, according to NYPD data.”….
The majority of burglaries accounting for the spike in break-ins over the last month have occurred in Manhattan, according to NYPD records.
Patrol area Manhattan South has recorded the largest jump in burglaries with a 70-percent hike from 100 to 171 over the last four weeks, according to the figures.
The northern section of the borough also recorded a 60-percent jump in burglaries over the last month, with 141 recorded, the numbers show.“

PaulE 840am – I think your TDS is making you miss the obvious truth that without a confirmational testing program the cohort of the asymptomatic C19 carriers will be totally missed in the case count; only those with confirmed symptoms are included. As you start testing, you start picking up members from both the asymptomatic and the pre-symptomatic cohorts which then swell the reported case count numbers. Hence what President Trump said in your quote is absolutely true, and here the dumbth burdens only those who don’t/can’t understand this very simple aspect of wholesale testing.

In contrast, the evil Dems who for years have been issuing a chorus of lies about the ‘Russia collusion’ continue doing so to this day, even after a tsunami of confirmed reports that overwhelms us about there never having been evidence to support the allegations, and that there is no evidence of such to date. Do you ever see any contrition from the Left? – the Alinsky response is simply to double down on the lies.

A read perhaps Scenes would enjoy.
    ‘The danger of safetyism‘
“Safetyism is a disposition that has been gaining strength for decades and is having a triumphal moment just now because of the virus. Public health, one of many institutions that speak on behalf of safety, has claimed authority to sweep aside whole domains of human activity as reckless, and therefore illegitimate.
I suspect the ease with which we have lately accepted the authority of health experts to reshape the contours of our common life is due to the fact that safetyism has largely displaced other moral sensibilities that might offer some resistance. At the level of sentiment, there appears to be a feedback loop wherein the safer we become, the more intolerable any remaining risk appears. At the level of bureaucratic grasping, we can note that emergency powers are seldom relinquished once the emergency has passed. Together, these dynamics make up a kind of ratchet mechanism that moves in only one direction, tightening against the human spirit.”
    …..
“To recommend restrictions on travel from China in the early stages of the pandemic would have been ideologically impossible for the WHO, regardless of what epidemiology might dictate. Utopian ideals are not only compatible with callousness about actual human lives, they sometimes demand it — the main thing is to maintain one’s own moral purity. This presents an easy opportunity for a Chinese regime that neither believes in Kant nor listens to John Lennon, but understands perfectly well how a rival society based on abstractions and taboos can be manipulated: accuse various EU functionaries of racism and, voilà, they suppress their own report that details the Chinese Communist Party’s misinformation campaign about the virus.
There would seem some affinity between safetyism and political correctness. Recall the mountain bikers with their jumps. Does putting one’s body at risk in confrontations with the material world strengthen the reality principle in a person’s psyche? There is a certain rude immediacy to physical pain that has a revelatory effect; a broken bone chastises any conceit you may have had that you had a complete grasp of the situation. Political correctness, on the other hand, seems to be an effort to avoid the pollution that comes from noticing reality. This is certainly the safer course, for anyone whose professional life takes place in an institution. It is easiest to maintain this diligence against reality if one remains insulated from those ugly causal chains that unfold in the real world — perhaps as a result of one’s own diktats, if one is highly placed.”

    It’s over……

Biden’s Virtual Campaign Is a Disaster
The candidate has reached the peak of his career in the rec room of his basement, talking into a computer.

…And so it went, the blackouts, the indecipherable monologues, the speakers staring silently, endlessly, waiting for a prompt. I kept my eye on the viewer counter in the corner of the screen. From what I could tell, viewership peaked at 2,637 and then fell off a cliff as the technical troubles continued. The numbers rose a bit when, nearing the program’s end, the announcer spoke Biden’s name. The screen filled with a sunlit suburban room, and we saw a man in aviators approaching the camera from the glow of a patio. “Did they introduce me?” he asked, looking around. “Huh?”
Biden gave a version of his stump speech from the campaign trail, with unfortunate improvisations: “This country is really all about the American people,” he said. It felt like a mercy when, after he bade us goodbye, his image faded and a card came up advertising the Virtual Rally in Tampa, Florida, that had just ended.
The whole rally was, in short, a disaster—not a lasting or sizable one, but easily, in its comprehensiveness, the equal of any in my political experience, and I covered the 2016 Jeb Bush campaign. The fundamental problem was conceptual. Biden’s handlers approached the challenge of bringing a rally online too literally. They tried simply to list the elements of a typical rally and tick off the boxes—music, check; Pledge of Allegiance, check; speeches, check; candidate remarks, check; Ray-Bans, check—and then throw them up on the web, in serial fashion. For Zoom-campaign operatives, the trick in the future will be to somehow re-create the essence of a real-life rally, its excitement and spontaneity, without straining after a precise simulation.

That’s a good article and worth considering.
I’ll posit another factor in public policy for risk intolerance in The Plague Years (aside from the boringly obvious one of ageing populations). That is the Prime Directive of Fairness.
It’s the same sort of thing that makes two people with five cents better than one with a dime and one with a dollar ..plus you get to add in the magic of the hierarchy of groups.
Shortly put, it’s not fair to allow surfers to surf while you keep urban POC (who tend towards the hypersocial) locked up. There’s a double whammy in that due to the geography of the thing, everyone isn’t exactly equal, plus the fact that some groups have special friends in the policy-making class. Fairness, or more correctly the correction of historical unfairness (real or otherwise) matters more than logic.

They just can not help themselves –
The governors of Georgia and Colorado have at least one thing in common. They both took steps to reopen their states’ economies in late April amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But for some reason, the media’s coverage of Gov. Brian Kemp (R., Ga.) has been slightly different from the media’s coverage of Gov. Jared Polis (D., Colo.).
Kemp, for example, has been accused of experimenting with “human sacrifice.” So reads the headline of an April 29 article published in the Atlantic, which accuses Kemp of turning Georgia residents into “unwilling canaries in an invisible coal mine, sent to find out just how many individuals need to lose their job or their life for a state to work through a plague.”
In a brief aside, the article acknowledges that some other states, including Colorado, “have already put similar plans in motion.” Polis, for some reason, is not identified as an accomplice in Kemp’s murder scheme.
When Kemp announced his plan to gradually reopen some Georgia businesses, former National Journal editor Ron Fournier echoed the sentiment of many media pundits when he wrote on Twitter: “Mark this day. Because two and three weeks from now, the Georgia death toll is blood on his hands. And as Georgians move around the country, they’ll spread more death and economic destruction.” Fournier hasn’t tweeted about Colorado in years.

This is his exact quote. “If we didn’t do any testing, we would have very few cases.” He’s implying the cases wouldn’t exist because they weren’t counted and recognized. that’s why he was so resistant to tests all along. Here’s a golden moment in the Trump legacy way back in March 6. From Fox news no less. He’s talking about adding the number of cases from a Cruise ship.
