   Me? I don’t like any parades. At my height, it’s all just the backs of people’s necks.
   But damn, you could set your watch to the media response. As predicted, there’s self-satisfied outrage.
   There’s that smirking scorn you find whenever patriotism rears its old-fashioned head. Just the name, “Salute to America,” is enough to make journalism school grads puke.
   Yes, patriotism is easy to smear, because to the media, it feels old. Like remnants of a bygone era — be it ribbon candy, penny-farthings or former Vice President Joe Biden. They wonder how you can salute something so inherently rotten.
   The mockery is exactly the opposite response the media offers those who malign American symbols.
   In fact, it’s a safe bet that the same people heaping loads of ridicule on an Independence Day parade are also heaping loads of praise on Colin Kaepernick, Nike and athletes who scorn the national anthem.
   It’s the same mockery reserved for Trump, who, as you know, is just a hood ornament on that jalopy called America. It’s the same scorn directed at you and me, or anyone not edgy enough to see the horrors of loving your country.
   I’m sure some hope the parade is a flop. A disaster. An embarrassment. Not me, and certainly not you.
   You may not even need a parade, or want one.
   But you’re getting one anyway, because some old guy who loves this country like you do became president, and this happened to be on his list.
   It would have been on yours too.

   We are celebrating those who have stood the dangerous watch or bled and burned for all us, it is them we celebrate.
   The tools that have sustained the United States that were used by our finest absolutely deserve to be front and center if it is a real celebration of what they do for us in this EIGHTEENTH year of the War on Terror. This is especially bizarre by the left as we just came off the magnificent D-Day ceremonies that united the world.
   So screw you all and get real about the pittance it costs when compared to the whole budget and I would submit that it is a waaaayy better use of taxpayer dollars than anything in the Congressional Pig Book!!!!

   Don, you are wasting your time. Some people won’t celebrate Independence Day. That would be like fingernails on the blackboard to them. No way would they ever allow They are known as the “glum lot, America is bad” crowd for a reason. Thank goodness you don’t have to be around them often. If you do, my sympathies.
   Independence Day is a national let down your hair day and be one to celebrate and be grateful. One thing about the grievance crowd is they are always complaining, always finding fault, always pout. Oh well. Best to let them stew in their own pot. Just imagine being married to one of them.

   For the haters, it’s open season on the American ideal.
   Colin Kaepernick doesn’t like today’s American flag because it reminds him of police brutality and he doesn’t like Betsy Ross’ O.G. flag because it reminds him of slavery. I’m starting to think maybe Colin Kaepernick is not so fond of the flag, or of the country that made him rich.
   Nike supported him by withdrawing the Betsy Ross-flagged sneaker. That’s right, the American flag, in any form, is now apparently a toxic symbol. The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, actually praised Nike.
   Meanwhile, the Charlottesville City Council just voted to stop celebrating Thomas Jefferson’s birthday in the city where he died on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence he wrote. American patriotism has just reached a record low entirely because of Democrats, of whom only 22% say they’re “extremely proud” of their country. To celebrate the Fourth, America’s most prominent newspaper is bidding for the trolling Hall of Fame by running a video, titled “Please stop telling me America is great,” that argues how America is “just OK.”
   Remember the distant past of 2016, when leading voices of progressivism were saying, “America never stopped being great” (Hillary Clinton) and “America is already great” (Barack Obama)? All that’s over.
   American military, economic and cultural power dominates the world (you’ve never heard of the biggest movie made by China or France this year, but they’ve certainly heard of “Avengers: Endgame”). America leads the world in Nobel laureates, and it isn’t close. America leads the world in the success of our middle class, and it isn’t close. True, America has more poor people than some other countries — but that’s because we let in millions of people from poor countries. Saying “America has a poverty problem” is like saying, “Florida has a high death rate.” Florida doesn’t kill people, it just attracts a lot of old ones.
   “What about slavery?” is not an irrelevant question to ask about American history. Slavery is indeed our original sin. It’s important. We fought a war over it. You may have heard of it.
   But to think of slavery first when you think of American history is like thinking of Charles Manson first when you think of men. America accomplished a few good things as well. America is a radical idea that had never come close to being implemented before — a broad-based democracy with government engineered for the purpose of zealously protecting our natural, or God-given, rights. We zoomed out ahead of the rest of the world, and we never looked back. As late as 1870, only 40% of the men in Britain were entitled to vote. Voting in America was not universal until women got the vote in 1920, but the US was miles ahead of everybody else in allowing its people to be heard.
   Even more important, the US was and is miles ahead when it comes to allowing its people to speak. In Britain, people can and do get thrown in jail for things they’ve said on Twitter. (The 2003 Communications Act makes it a crime to type mean things on the internet. No, you don’t get a break for being young, or drunk, or for thinking you’re being darkly funny. The police actually monitor social media looking for people to arrest.) A 2014 headline in The Guardian reads, “Is it right to jail someone for being offensive on Facebook or Twitter?” No, it isn’t right. It is in fact quite wrong, and in America it is unthinkable because we have the world’s strongest protections for speech.
   The First Amendment, like everything else about America, has not always worked perfectly (Woodrow Wilson threw Eugene V. Debs in jail under the Sedition Act for opposing World War I) but is a great and noble ideal, and we are far closer to living up to its full potential now than we ever have been in the glorious history of this exceptionally wonderful country.

   Don’t take it from me; ask the world. A Gallup survey notes that 150 million people, or one out of 25 adults on the planet, would move to the US if they could. That’s more than the next four countries combined. “America remains unusually attractive to people from all over the world — in a way to which no other country compares,” Gallup reported.
   Everybody knows America is number one, which is why, even among the hating class of Americans, no one ever leaves. Ta-Nehisi Coates and Spike Lee haven’t moved to France. Gavin Newsom isn’t moving to Mexico. Colin Kaepernick isn’t moving to Cuba. Lena Dunham, Bryan Cranston, Barbra Streisand and all the other celebrities who threatened/promised to move to Canada are still here. Hell, we can’t even get the Canadian-born whiners and haters (like Seth Rogen and Jim Carrey) to move back.
   America didn’t complete the project of freedom on that broiling day in Philly, but that’s like saying your kid’s first day of school is no big deal because your kids can’t do algebra yet. On July 4, 1776, we began setting up the greatest opportunity for human flourishing the world has ever known, and our example continues to be the world’s beacon. The United States of America isn’t perfect. We’re merely the best.

    Re Fox News – No matter Trump’s comments on the matter, FN is still the best source of accurate and timely news. (I welcome evidence to the contrary.) And that includes its commentary panels that contain important personages from the liberal side. Given that two of its top anchors – Sheppard Smith and Chris Wallace – are liberals, no other outlet dare offer such balance – it would simply destroy their carefully constructed histrionics in which they wrap and present the progressive narrative.

    RobertC 1211pm – Thank you. My concern about media rating services is that they are all birds of a feather in the journalistic industry. And that entire industry has been demonstrated to be overwhelmingly left-leaning, including those who claim to stand above the fray. As a lifelong wordsmith, it is easy for people like me to take a, say, NYT or NPR report and show how it was written to favor the Left, how to make it go toward a more moderate version, and, of course, how to make it suitable for a right-leaning story. In the late 90s I did exactly that when I taught the required course in critical thinking to graduate journalists and media producers in CSU Northridge’s Mass Communications School. Over the years studies have shown that the country’s mass media are overwhelmingly self-declared left-leaning – e.g. google ‘media bias’, or for example

    George 1:12 — My understanding of the issue we are discussing is not the bias on opinion shows or story selection or how things are ‘couched’.. yes there is bias there and my post reflected that.. the reporting of facts is a different issue. The so-called left leaning media outlets are clearly more factually accurate when reporting events than the right tilting outlets, especially internet sites like Breitbart. And although the point of view may seem left leaning it not does not change facts.. facts are facts. As to the media being ‘self-declared left leaning’ I direct you to the book “What liberal Media” by Eric Alterman. Despite being written several years ago, he makes the argument, based on ownership, that the opposite is true, that media is way more conservative now than in the days of Walter Cronkite. The wealthy owners of American media are far from liberal and only appear to be liberal when compared to how far conservatism has moved to the far right. What used to be the middle ground (50 yardline) has moved right to the 25 yard line. One must remember that it was then conservative Richard Nixon who brought us EPA, title IX, and consumer protection, among others…things the current administration is trying to dismantle.

    Among registered voters, healthcare for illegal aliens gets little suppor, with a majority of 61 percent in opposition to such a plan and only 36 percent supporting the initiative.
    Working class and middle class voters, those with no college degree, and Americans earning less than $50,000 a year oppose providing free healthcare to illegal aliens. Roughly 55 percent of voters earning less than $50,000 a year said they oppose giving healthcare to illegal aliens and about 63 percent of non-college graduates said they opposed the Democrat plan.
