The bigger picture is so much more compelling, yet how can the finite wrestle with and apprehend the infinite, no less comprehend? Love this story from a Princeton grad (young man) who passes through this area now and then and needs a couch to sleep on for night or two on his world travels.
At Princeton, some students and professors in conjunction with other universities like Harvard (?) and the government, were looking for the cure for diabetes or something. They gathered the best computer techies on hand, feed all the science and data into the government Super Computer, and hit the go button and waited…..and waited….and waited. Usually the computer spits out something in a few minutes, 20 minutes max. Finally, they got tired of waiting, locked up, and went away for the evening. The next day, after running all night, the Super computer was still running. Finally, it spit out page after page after page of numbers and figures and symbols.
After looking at it, somebody asked, “What is this? What does it mean?” Another answered,, “Its # formula.” Another said, “Its the formula, but we stilll don’t know what it means.” 🙂

The protracted death of the US space program has been a real shame, but hopefully one of these hobbyists can make money at the thing. You can argue that at this point, the US interest in space is purely basic research in propulsion and habitats plus military.
So far as Tesla is concerned, my take is that unless they have a boatload of patents, they are doomed. The minute battery technology hits some sort of tipping point, Toyota and their other car building friends will wipe them out. Perhaps the hope is a buyout, although I expect that the stock price is unrealistically high for that.
