[Good-hearted Darrell Berkheimer, one of our Union’s several progressive columnists, is truly an exemplar of ideological low hanging fruit. His most recent 1sep18 column is standard leftwing pap and a collection of its staple feel-good talking points, with no consideration of how any of such socialist goals can be achieved, either with living breathing human beings or available monies. His solution for the latter is to defund the military, which to him and his is the ever-present and unnecessary burden that maintains an America which keeps globalism at bay. If it weren’t for his effect on the even less-well-read of our community, Mr Berkheimer’s ignorance of history and economics could be gently dismissed as the simple outpourings of a concerned and kindly old gentleman. gjr]

It’s not enough to go after just the 2nd A. More thoughts from the left on plans to get rid of the 1st A. Apparently the ‘correct’ voices are being drowned out by too much free speech.

Because – you know – it’s not like the good old days when everything we read in the papers was truthful.
Money quote: “How can we get back to that common ground? We need new mechanisms—suited to the digital age—that allow for a shared understanding of facts and that focus our collective attention on the most important problems.”
And who gets to run this ‘new mechanism’? And who gets to decide on what the ‘most important problems’ are?
This drivel is from an Associate Prof.
The first thing I think we need to agree on is that no person or group gets to decide for the rest of us what our most important problems are.

This hasn’t happened without red flags being raised along the way. According to Stewart, Gillum ignored those red flags from law enforcement officials.
“From 2009 to 2013, public documents show that when gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum served on the Tallahassee City Commission, the Tallahassee City Commission repeatedly ignored pleas from law enforcement for help with a festering crime problem,” Stewart wrote. “Gillum served as a city commissioner from 2003 to 2014 and was elected mayor in 2014.”
Stewart also pointed out that despite the data showing these trends, Gillum has failed to fund the recommendations of the Tallahassee Police Department in response to these statistics.

“It is the subsequent 200-year history of American constitutional jurisprudence in which such disputes on definitions have kept lawyers, politicians, and SCOTUS busy.”
Exactly. Briefly sidestepping the ‘treason’ Issue, innumerable legal experts, TV pundits, legal scholars, moi, you, and Punchy can derive our various opinions, citing chapter and verse from the law. But the only thing that matters is what SCOTUS says. You never know for sure what the outcome of a case before SCOTUS will be.
An example is the SCOTUS ruling about Obamacare requiring individuals to buy health insurance, i, e., citizens required to participate in economic activity. These pages, as well as countless editorials, were filled with arguments for requiring folks to purchase something simply because they could fog a mirror as totally Constitutional because of the Commence Clause. Precedent (case law) was sighted as well as the usual citations to the law from legal scholars, not to mention the letter of the law. Slam dunk, our lefty friends unabashedly proclaimed.
When it was all said and done, SCOTUS put real limitations on the Commence Clause and the pro Commerce Clause agrument did not fly.
Bottom line: All that matters at the end of the day is what SCOTUS says. But, it’s fun arguing like opposing lawyers presenting their cases. :).
Ironically, some are making the agrument that Andy McCabe (and others ) are guilty of violating the Hatch Act, not Trump, looking at the letter of the law. And Comey, IMHO, is definitely guilty of obstruction of justice by withholding evidence and impeding an criminal investigation…again looking solely at the latter part of the obstruction of justice federal law. But, I don’t have the final say.

Why should the victim’s families pay for the housing and food for these scumbags after their sons or daughters were murdered by them? I think that is immoral. Anyway, get the noose ready for them and get it going. For the lesser crimes, I say pillory the bastards in the public square for a few days.

Since free speech forums have become rather hard to find in the US, let’s move the venue to Canada.. Coming in November, a great debate. Steve Bannon vs. David Frum.
The two will take on “the rise of populism,” with Bannon on the “pro” side and Frum on the “con.”
“Throughout the Western world, politics is undergoing a sea-change,” reads the description of the debate on the website for Munk Debates, a charitable initiative that pits two opposing figures against each other on polarizing issues.
“Does this surging populist agenda in Western nations signal a permanent shift in our politics? Or, is it passing phenomenon that will remain at the fringes of society and political power?”
David Frum is a former speech writer for George W. Bush, current editor of the Atlantic, and is a avowed NeverTrumper. Should be interesting.
https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2018/09/05/steve-bannon-to-defend-populism-at-november-munk-debates-in-toronto.html
“The Munk semi-annual debates, founded by the late Peter Munk and his wife, Melanie, tend to focus on polarizing topics and have been attended by a number of controversial guests since launching in 2008.
The last debate was on political correctness and featured Stephen Fry, the actor and writer, and Jordan Peterson, an academic whose views have won him a massive audience but also widespread criticism.”
Bannon is set to speak about “The Rise of Populism” at a Nov. 2 Munk Debate — an ongoing debate series held at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall that draws some 3,000 people each time. The November debate, announced Wednesday, is also drawing criticism, with a number of people attacking its moderator and organizer, Rudyard Griffiths, of giving Bannon a platform to share his views.

Not for Punchy:
The King James version was written in English in 1511 Don’t think they were speaking The King’s English in ancient Israel a couple millennias BC. Hint: the Hebrews spoke Hebrew. To add icing on the cake, the original language had no gender pronoun for God. It was something that the King James translators struggled with. Should God be called him, her, or it, since the original text had no pronoun for the name that was not permissible to even utter once upon a time. That’s why the Hebrew God’s name was spelled without vowels.
I ain’t no Bible scholar, but I once bought the King James 300th anniversity Bible (1911 edition) in a thrift store for a quarter. The forward explained the difficulties of translating words from Hebrew to English when there is not exact equilivant in English or the English word does not capture the precise meaning. Also, our English language has changed in 400 years. Our modern words “conversation” and “comprehend” were “conduct” and “apprehend” in 1511, for example.
Then there is the Greek texts, again before the King’s English. There are like 4 different words for love, each with a separate and distinct meaning. English has one word for love, thus I love you.
