[Here's the next batch of fresh sand.  I find it interesting how the intersection of what interests me and RR's commenters goes up and down.  It appears that the interests of our most voluble readers pretty much track the news cycle, often leaving unattended more fundamental and systemic events/trends that impact our lives and country.  Because I have always walked a path less tread, for me this variance is noteworthy but not a consternation, since RR has always been a record of my observations and interpretations from the last great century of Man.  In sum, I think of my weblog as a letter to my family and the future which, of course, includes the contents of its comment streams.  gjr]

Like all good lefties, Paul is all about virtue signalling. Just what in hell alters the dynamics of who we make fun of because of your association with them, Paul? It says a lot about your narcissistic attitude that some how you need to be involved.
There’s plenty of left wing sickos out there making death threats and I haven’t seen one single complaint from Paul about any of those ‘little jokes’.

Interesting argument in short 1:36 video. Not about about abortion that caught my interest per se, but an agrument to parlay into other “rights”.
I have read statements such as housing is right, healthcare is a right, etc. A wacky former mayor of Nevada City said in the Union that healthcare is a right because it is part of her “pursuit of happiness.”. In fact, one lady this year told me sraight to my face that the government owes her a house and they must provide her one.

Thanks Reinette. Was Todd Juvinall there? This blog has been a catalyst for the political change that has been necesssary to move our community to “purple” from political extremism. And guess what Todd, it’s happening! Right under your nose.

Oh jeffy….you should remember the Churchill quote when considering your “impact” on things…….”A modest man, with much to be modest about”.
I try not to think about your blog in political terms but as a bottomless (I tell you…the jokes practically write themselves) font of humorous topics from which we can all freely sample!

But what if you really gave it a mighty try, and addressed the very cogent point that D’Souza makes about ‘abortion rights’ in that video? Do you think that you’re even capable of doing that?

I watched the video and came out with this observation. there are two issues concerning abortions. One is a womans right to choose and the other is whether it should be subsidized by taxpayers. Here is a question for you and other RR contributors. Do you support a woman’s right to choose if it is not subsidized by taxpayers?

If a woman wants to abort a baby it is her “choice” as it is her body. However, I think there is a case to be made about when that takes place. Regardless she must live with her decision and it is my understanding many women regret it. Also, Planned Parenthood was started by a woman who practiced eugenics. And that was to cut the births of blacks. Seems she succeeded as most of the abortions are of blacks. Anyway, I am not interested in paying for that “private” decision a woman makes for her abortion. Afterall the SCOTUS ruled in 1973 it was her “choice” and one made in private.

Sanity creeping into the body politic?
Wynne and the Liberals ran on an even more extreme social justice agenda in 2018, which promised to fight global climate change aggressively, raise the minimum wage, expand free pharmacare, and establish universal child care.
But newcomer Doug Ford reorganized Canada’s Progressive Conservative Party to campaign directly against Wynne and her Liberal Party’s tax-and-spend policies. The Conservatives’ most effective campaign issue leading up to the June 7 election was blaming the Liberals for Ontario residents being forced to spend an extra 38 cents per gallon of gas and about 30 percent more for electricity to offset the cost of buying emission credits on California’s carbon trading exchange.
The Liberals were crushed with a stunning loss of 51 seats, while Conservatives won 49 more seats to give Ford the Ontario Premiership and control a legislative majority with 70-seats.

Pelline and his mythical “blue wave” turning Nevada County “purple”! Not so fast!
Here are the latest numbers from the Nevada County Elections regarding voter registrations. This is as of today.
TOTAL Registered Voters 66,589 (down from 68,274 on June 5th)
    Democrats 24,121 36.2%
    Republicans 22,673 34.04%
    DTS 15,596 23.42%
All other small parties total about 7%
Looks like there is no “wave” for any party. And most of the elected leaders are Republicans as the people think, rightly so, they will watch the money better and protect them better. LOL!

Paule: “Do you support a woman’s choice to have an abortion if it is not subsidized by taxpayers?”
You probably should more precisely define ‘abortion’. (answering rather than asking would be nice, but that’s too much to wish for).
Check out the law in places like (your fave) Denmark. You’d be surprised how often countries viewed as progressive heaven require parental consent, worry about trimesters, etc.
Should it be legal for a woman to abort (without health reasons) at 8.9 months?

Abortion is the law of the land, whether one supports it or not, depending on your definition of support. As a lawful activity, I live by the laws. I may not support it, but I do not condone it either. Like many things, one can tolerate something without being a cheerleader.
The question raised is does one “support” abortion just as long as it is not subsidized by the government? To turn that question around, would you oppose a woman’s right to choose if the taxpayers were not subsidizing for it? Again, it depends on your use of the word “oppose”.
Bottomline is abortion is legal in practice. Liking any law, or lawful activity, supporting or opposing is not a requirement. Condoning is not a requirement, tolerance is. Some like the pot laws, some don’t. Some support flag burning, others do not. SCOTUS took custody of the abortion issue (as far as its legality goes) 50-60 years ago and that is were it remains to this day. The rest is just tweaking on the edges with parental rights, late term abortion debates, and health & safety issues. Parental notification vs privacy rights of a 13 year old come to mind. Most regulations governing abortions fall under the normal health and safety issues such as requirements for sanitary conditions and practices, medical licensing regulations for facilities and certain staff…..that kind of stuff.
There are a lot lawfully activity that I have no desire to support or oppose (on purely constitutional grounds). But, don’t think for second I would ever take kids there…ever. And that’s my opinion. Support or oppose? Not a requirement.

    This could help –
Under the plan, people would be barred from getting asylum if they came into the US between ports of entry and were prosecuted for illegal entry. It would also add presumptions that would make it extremely difficult for Central Americans to qualify for asylum, and codify — in an even more restrictive form — an opinion written by Sessions in June that attempted to restrict asylum for victims of domestic and gang violence.
Vox has confirmed that the regulation is in the process of being evaluated, and has seen a copy of a draft of the regulation.
The proposed regulation would bar anyone from getting asylum if they’d been convicted of illegal entry or illegal reentry. That means people who asked for asylum when they were apprehended at the border, but were prosecuted first, would get denied asylum.

Rising optimism on the economy among racial minorities is boosting President Donald Trump’s chances in 2018, says a poll by Zogby Analytics.
The racial groups are vital to the Democratic Party’s elite-led raucous coalition of minorities, and any decline in their 2018 turnout could cripple Democrats’ hope of regaining power in the House. For example, African-Americans comprise roughly one-quarter of the Democratic Party’s turnout in presidential elections.

Regarding abortion and the SCOTUS. The US Constitution has nothing in it about “privacy” and that was discussed by the dissenters in the Roe v Wade decision. What the majority did was to rip the laws of the state away and federalize them with a bogus “finding”. In fact the SCOTUS became the legislature. If the decision had been one decided by the people and not a nine-member unelected court, I think then the decision would be mute or muted. But by usurpong the issue from the elected officials it keeps the wound open. All the smart people know a decision of a court can be overturned by a future court. Sort of like Executive Oders or even laws subject to referendums and initiatives. Regardless of how we feel about the “choice” of destroying a future human, the fact a SCOTUS did the legislation is the issue.

That’s a pretty brilliant idea. I expect that the opposing side (ie. the government representing the 85% of people who don’t desire open borders) merely needs to slow down the paperwork. It’ll be like those customs officers in Europe who used to take forever to allow some goods through.
If I were Emperor, I’d probably allow such things since they might actually be bonafide political activist escapees and not just merely the poor of the world pouring in. It would be fun to require the refugees to live in their host’s house for the next ten years or so though, it would be educational for everybody.

Topic: Fish, Gregory and real Libertarians.
You know, Punchy has asked two commentators here (one several times) how/why why why how could they possibly support Trump after voting for Gary Johnson!? The answer has been clear and steadfast…if one ever bothered to listen. One need not be a Trump supporter to agree with some issues. Besides, the alternative of Hillary is contrary to Libertarian values. Not much intersectionality there. None. As mentioned before, the three most important issues of 2016 was SCOTUS, SCOTUS, SCOTUS.
“In October 2016, Manny Klausner, a libertarian and co-founder of the Reason Foundation, said that he was voting for the Libertarian Party candidate, Gary Johnson, but added that for other libertarians, “the likelihood that the next president will nominate several Supreme Court justices in the next four years is reason enough for voters in battleground states to vote for Trump — rather than Johnson — if their state is a cliffhanger on the eve of the election.”
In July 2016, conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt wrote (in an article titled “It’s the Supreme Court, Stupid”) that his decision to vote for Trump was based largely on the potential repercussions of a Hillary Clinton presidency on the Court.

Hell, the man is a New York billionaire property developer who is dealing with a Republican Congress that has a few super-moderate (R)s that he has to please. Since the Democrats would vote against Jesus (or an even more exalted personage, Obama) as a justice if Trump put him up, all of the (R) votes will have to deliver.

This was predictable in the socialist republic of Seattle –
The Seattle Police Guild, the police labor union, which includes “all of the officers and sergeants on the Seattle Police Department,” according to its website, called the departures a “mass exodus” that would affect safety.
“Less officers on the streets, less safe for the citizens — and when you have all these officers you have invested all this money in and they are leaving for Tacoma, Olympia, Pierce County and Snohomish County,” Seattle Police Officers Guild Vice President Richard O’Neill said.
The union cited Mike O’Brien and Kshama Sawant, two Seattle City Council members, as being especially critical of law enforcement.
“A city council member [Sawant] can call two police officers ‘murderers’ and the city pays for her legal fees,” a source told MyNorthwest.com, referring to a fatal 2016 police-involved shooting.
