[Here's the next batch of fresh sand. I find it interesting how the intersection of what interests me and RR's commenters goes up and down. It appears that the interests of our most voluble readers pretty much track the news cycle, often leaving unattended more fundamental and systemic events/trends that impact our lives and country. Because I have always walked a path less tread, for me this variance is noteworthy but not a consternation, since RR has always been a record of my observations and interpretations from the last great century of Man. In sum, I think of my weblog as a letter to my family and the future which, of course, includes the contents of its comment streams. gjr]

Pretty much sums it up. The new catchy phrase is ICE MELT.
Yep, we charge 2% tariffs on their cars, they charge 10% (or greater) traffis on our cars, but we are the bad guys. Must not go there, I reckon.
Elimate borders. It’s so draconian.
Free stuff? Well, only wound to tomb. They haven’t quite tackled out who is going to pay for the all burials….yet. Probably the usual suspect that will pay for free healthcare, guaranteed jobs, and guaranteed outcomes for all. Best to start designing government crematoriums that are eco-friendly. Ashes to ashes.

There is some value to that.

What the Dems have been saying is a different issue than Trumps lying. Your question to me is vague and unclear. What dos it mean whe you ask ” Or does it mean to you that all of that going down is inconsequential to the Dems’ fortunes in November?” I have to as what “All that’s going down do you refer to? Can you be specific and I’ll answer.

Lol on Sotomayor’s ICE meltdown.
The SCOTUS travel ban decision was the correct one. The Court has no expertise or mandate or authority in regards to setting national security or a host of other issues that are under the the jurisdiction of the Legislative Branch or the Executive Branch, Do you want the court to set fiscal, economic, defense policy, or diplomatic policy?? Hmmm. If so, why have a Congress or even vote for a President?
From WSJ, behind the paywall, for the interested readers.
“Finally, the justices took the opportunity to overrule Korematsu v. U.S. (1944), which had permitted President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Mr. Trump’s order has often been compared to that shameful episode. But FDR imprisoned American citizens without due process and for no reason other than their ethnic heritage. Mr. Trump’s order applies only to aliens outside the U.S., who have no constitutional right to enter the country.
The four liberal justices dissented, concluding that Mr. Trump’s statements about Muslims were sufficient to constitute an impermissible religious bias that should invalidate the order, as if it were a domestic Establishment Clause case. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, joined by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, also brushed aside the court’s precedents deferring to the president’s judgment on international affairs and foreign policy. The Sotomayor dissent disputed Mr. Trump’s policy conclusions about the dangers of inadequate vetting, citing the views of various “national-security officials” from previous administrations. The dissenting justices’ reliance on the views of former officials is a radical departure from constitutional norms.
Justice Clarence Thomas raised an important point in his concurring opinion. He challenged the growing trend in which individual district court judges—whose jurisdiction extends only to a single state or part of a state—issue “universal” injunctions that purport to apply nationwide. He questioned the constitutionality of this practice and indicated that if it continues, the court will have to stop it.
In upholding Mr. Trump’s order, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed the basic principle that judges must stay their hands when evaluating the discretionary decisions of the president or Congress in areas the Constitution reserves to the political branches.

On the Ca pregnancy centers, SCOTUS again made the correct decision. Kennedy specifically went out of his way to slam California and their “forward” Socialist Statist Frisco thinking. 😉
Kennedy warned that the FACT Act “is a paradigmatic example of the serious threat presented when government seeks to impose its own message in the place of individual speech, thought, and expression.” And Kennedy strongly rebuked what he described as the California legislature’s “congratulatory statement” that the FACT Act “was part of California’s legacy of ‘forward thinking.’” It “is not forward thinking to force individuals to be an instrument for fostering public adherence to an ideological point of view they find unacceptable.” Rather, Kennedy stressed, it “is forward thinking to begin by reading the First Amendment as ratified in 1791; to understand the history of authoritarian government as the Founders then knew it; to confirm that history since then shows how relentless authoritarian regimes are in their attempts to stifle free speech; and to carry those lessons onward as we seek to preserve and teach the necessity of freedom of speech for generations to come.” Right on!!!
Clarence Thomas is writing beautiful decisions lately.
Thomas and the majority reached a similar conclusion for the unlicensed centers. First, the majority observed, the only justification that California has cited for the law was “purely hypothetical”:…….And even if the state had advanced a concrete justification for the notice requirement, Thomas continued, the requirement still places too much of a burden on the unlicensed centers’ speech. Thomas noted that, as the state had agreed at the oral argument in March, a billboard for an unlicensed center bearing the message “Choose Life” would also have to include a 29-word notice “in as many as 13 different languages.” “In this way,” Thomas suggested, “the unlicensed notice drowns out the facility’s own message,” making it unlikely that an unlicensed center would even try to have “such a billboard in the first place.”

PaulE 905am – I was referring to your ignoring all the citations of the crap that the leftwing thugs have been putting out under the lamestream sanitized name of “incivility” in recent weeks which were cited over and over again by other commenters. And your response was to just keep repeating allegations of Trump’s “lies”, as if they were somehow relevant to the discussion, or somehow equivalent to people being kicked out of restaurants, demonstrations in front of private houses, federal facilities being shut down, and leftwing lunatic politicians calling for wholesale denial of public access to anyone of the Right; that along with loud threats to next block major transportation arteries. The Left has always resorted to incivility, and continue to do so when they cannot promote their agenda in normative ways. Daniel Henninger has a good piece on it here –

A suggestion for our forward thinking California. House illegals on campuses and open your own doors.
What better first glimpse of America could be offered to immigrants than the energy, pastoral beauty, and hospitality of a quiet college quad or well-maintained residence hall?
It also makes no sense for college students to venture far and wide for internships when they could be enlisted on campus over the summer to tutor children from Central America and monitor their safety and treatment.
If progressives believe that sovereignty and border enforcement are passé notions, then they should at least match their rhetoric with concrete solutions. In California, there are ongoing existential crises with homelessness, unaffordable housing, and dismal public schools that rate near bottom of national surveys.
How could California square its present circle of being both the most impoverished and the most affluent of states — the most callous in fact, the most caring in theory?
Why not cease the current stampede to private academies that has left the public schools of the greater coastal corridor non-diverse and near apartheid?

Just because I entered a discussion about our liar in Cheif does not mean I am responsible to respond to every request about alleged bad behavior on the other side. With that in mind let me state that if the so called left wing thugs have broken the law those laws should be enforced. Are you proposing that new laws need to be passed to stop this behavior? Remember the Civil Rights Movement was largely fueled by civil disobedience. Do you think that was inappropriate behavior?

Dr. Rebane: Ah, Punchy is just a single issue guy. Or single issues. Trump lied, pot. and no IRS audits of those playing music in bars for cash. trying to make a better life for them and their families. ).
The single issue Punchy which plays his the endless audio loop. is “Trumpft is a liar! He said Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the nation and it does not!!!!!!! Trump lied!!” Has absolutely nothing to do with anything else making the 24/7 news cycle., duh.
Hey, let Punchy do his single issue stuff. Clinton (and his defenders) called it compartmentalization. That’s all it is. Meanwhile, while Punchy is focusing on Trumpfts lies and Trump is a Liar, there is a bigger picture going on. Let Punchy remark on a tree while the forest is ablaze.
“The left, to the point of irrationality, despises a triumphant Trumpian right and believes that to equate it with fascists is not only legitimate, but a sign that the accusers are the real moral, righteous and courageous dissenters in these terrible times.
In 1968, mobs cursed Lyndon Johnson, who had passed all the civil rights laws, howling, “Hey, hey, LBJ: How many kids did you kill today!”
After Dr. King’s assassination, a hundred cities, including the capital, were looted and burned. Scores died. U.S. troops and the National Guard were called out to restore order. Soldiers returning from Vietnam were spat upon. Cops were gunned down by urban terrorists. Bombings and bomb attempts were everyday occurrences. Campuses were closed down. In May 1971, tens of thousands of radicals went on a rampage to shut down D.C.
A cautionary note to progressives: Extremism is how the left lost the future to Nixon and Reagan.
Ah, timing is everything. New RNC ad.

What really interests me yesterday, today, and tomorrow is the DOJ-FBI’s refusual to turn over certain documents to Congressional Oversight. The looming Constitutional Showdown.
Yes, the FBI-DOJ should not name names of those not under indictment nor should Congress interfere with an ongoiing criminal or counterintelligence investigation…..unless….unless there is “strong evidence of a crime.” Last paraphraph (sentence) of the DOJ’s policy and procedures on such matters in dealing with Congress.
Teaser: I will look for the doc, might take a day or two. “Unless strong evidence of a crime.” is the operative phrase here.
Memo and policy goes back to the days of AG William French Smith. Rosenstein can stall, but he may be on shaky ground.
“Law enforcement officers and prosecutors may never select the timing of investigative steps or criminal charges for the purpose of affecting any election, or for the purpose of giving an advantage or disadvantage to any candidate or political party.”
Strong evidence of a crime can overcome this policy, as was the case with the bureau’s investigation into…..blah, blah, blah.
http://davidbrivkin.com/muellers-fruit-of-the-poisonous-tree/
[Only words in this link I care about is “strong evidence of a crime”. That overrides the Rosenstein’s claim of withholding docs. Has nothing to do with the Meuller investigation.

The “list of lies” Punchy shared at 7:02 are classic, with many better classified as off the cuff hyperbole (like the Time Magazine cover claim) or differences in opinion or the claim of disrespect on a call to a military widow by a flamboyant Congresscritter whose account was disputed by someone who was listening to Trump making the call.

A classic: ‘Oct. 16 “I hear that Ireland is going to be reducing their corporate rates down to 8 percent from 12.” (Ireland has no plans to cut its tax rate.)’
Note the sleight of hand by the ‘fact checker’… even if one assumes the claim Ireland had no plan to cut its corporate tax rate is true (who in Ireland can say definitively?) says nothing about Trump’s claim he’d heard they were.
Trump does play fast and loose with facts, bending them at will, like many salesman. But somebody please point to any in the list Punch shared with us that compare to the claim Obamacare would average a $2500 savings, or that if you liked your doctor you could keep your doctor, if you liked your plan you could keep your plan. These were baldfaced LIES made to sell a restructuring of healthcare in this country to a Gruberized public.
Trump at worst is a used car salesman, a real estate trader. Obama and Clinton (either of them) are arguably worse. In any case, Trump is the president now, get used to it. If you keep this up, you’ll have him in office through 2024.

Ya sure China is ready to have a trade war with its biggest customer –
This has made a lot of people nervous, including those at China’s National Institution for Finance and Development (NIFD), a Chinese government-backed think tank.
In a study leaked on the internet earlier this week, and which has subsequently been removed, the group warned that “financial panic” is likely to escalate in the period ahead.
“We think China is currently very likely to see a financial panic,” the NIFD study said.
The group warned of bond defaults and liquidity shortages, and suggested the recent rout in Chinese financial markets posed dangers to the economy during a period of heightened trade tensions and rising US interest rates.
It also singled out the use of leverage by Chinese stock investors, warning that at around five trillion yuan, it has again reached the levels seen in 2015 just before the Chinese stock market plunged in 2015.
“We failed to clean up the leveraged funds after the 2015 market rout; they have staged a comeback in a new guise,” the NIFD said.

It probably is time for him to leave. It’s fairly rare that founders get to stick around, they rarely have the ability to run large companies and bring too much in the way of crazy personal opinion to the table. It isn’t like the guy has serious technical chops or any real vision. It’s a trivial user interface stuck on top of a data base, the genius is in being to extract interesting information from the thing and to handle millions of users simultaneously.
Dunno how easy it’ll be to kick him out if he still owns 1/4 of the company, it depends on how concentrated the other shares are.
You have to admit it would be nice to have a website like this, basically a form of online slot machine in terms of addiction, be politically agnostic. The likelihood of antitrust action is basically nil, which probably makes sense in this case.

Penn, who served as chief strategist for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, revealed that 84 percent of Americans favor turning undocumented immigrants over to federal agents.

Todd 3:23PM – Right! Is there a day that goes by that you aren’t calling someone stupid or worse on The Union opinion comments? If you had an ounce of talent you could do your trashing in cartoons. I’ll sell you a book that teaches you how.

I
entered a discussion meant I started a discussion. I entered it into the sandbox. Sorry that’s so difficult to understand.

LIB court logic.
“Gun rights groups argued the law should be overturned because it was impossible to comply with, as the technology does not exist. The court ruled the law could not be overturned simply because it was impossible to comply with.”

BillT so true. And have you ever noticed that the sensitive libs never tell their own ilk to tone it down. Which in itself is a bias. But I get a kick out of kicking their asses and I simply do it by calling them a liberal!

PaulE 443pm – Indeed you did, and you always do. When a discussion is ongoing in which you are being asked to respond, then “entering” or starting a new discussion is your guise for avoiding the sought for response – others call it changing the subject. That’s what we’ve been talking about for years. Capice?

So George what you are saying is that I cannot start a new discussion without responding to an old discussion. Do you place that same criteria on others contributing to your blog ?

AHHhhh Take a hike Paul, you never answer shit. You make a point NOT to. Oh.Wait.. You DID answer one….. Sorta…. A cut and paste job that someone with plenty of worthless time on their hands scabbed together. (but that’s not an answer) Can’t come up with anything on your own? Can’t put any words together of your own? ( You might be held accountable for those words…) So that how a LIB-terian gets by.. Got it.
