NFLkneeingMore and more NFL players, owners, and managers started showing their disrespect for one of our nation’s most hallowed totems – The Star-Spangled Banner.  They chose to do this for a number of political reasons starting with protesting alleged police brutality.  And in doing so they have the temerity to claim that their acts of disrespect are not unpatriotic but intended to show β€œunity”.  That’s bullshit.

Whatever their sentiments are about civil rights violations and governments’ overreach, they have many other ways (e.g. a protest patch on their uniforms) to exhibit their feelings that need not desecrate the totems of our unique and special nation; hallowed symbols that have gathered Americans for generations to visibly demonstrate to each other that β€˜e pluribus unum’ works and is the underlying rationale for living civil and productive lives together.  And in such unseemly public acts these people also dishonor those many who have given life and limb to defend and preserve those symbols of our nation.

If these people – ungrateful millionaires all – choose such overt and crass actions to demonstrate their unity, then to me and mine they have come together to achieve different ends through means neither of which I condone nor can unite.  When they knee our national anthem, they are simply cranking another notch ratcheting toward our Great Divide.

[27sep17 update]  Jason Riley in the 27sep17 WSJ (here) covers today’s national anthem brouhaha, and brings up a couple of points with which I happened to agree and did not include in the above.  As a youngster, Riley’s Jehovah’s Witness religious teachings did not allow him to salute the flag or honor our national anthem, which he first started doing as a teenager when he left that church.  JWs were often persecuted (beyond shunning) by their neighbors for these omissions which highlighted their different beliefs.

A relevant 1943 SCOTUS ruling stated that government or any of its agencies (e.g. public schools) forcing someone to salute the flag was unconstitutional.  More cogently, the court held that β€œsaluting the flag is a form of utterance and that the right to not speak is as equally protected under the First Amendment as the right to free speech.” (emphasis mine) And β€œto believe that patriotism will not flourish if patriotic ceremonies are voluntary and spontaneous instead of a compulsory routine is to make an unflattering estimate of the appeal of our institutions to free minds.”

Now critical minds will understand the difference between public enforcement and enforcement of private sector policies of which the kneeling athletes are in violation.  And, of course, all of us are free to shun anyone on any grounds as we please.  (At least we had that freedom during the progressives’ bad old days; today things are not so simple anymore.)  We don’t have to watch them play or buy their sponsors’ products.  As I stated above, I and mine are of a mind to do exactly that with anyone who disses the good ol’ US of A.

In the end, β€œteam owners and NFL officials will have to decide whether to continue indulging such behavior on company time, but the larger question is whether what is being protested has some basis in reality beyond anecdotes and viral videos on social media.”  And here Riley points out the most ludicrous part of the current kneeing epidemic – their putative casus belli, as I pointed out above, is existentially bullshit.

Why?  Because all available data from national and regional police databases show that police-involved shootings have dropped drastically in the last decades while the allegedly afflicted populations have grown enormously.  Riley quotes the relevant stats, and correctly concludes – β€œAn increase in press coverage of police shootings isn’t the same thing as an increase in police shootings.”

You specifically said Obama was not qualified to be president Implies some set of credentials he lacked. I assume that will be a universal requirement
One more note before I hit the road the country was in a whole lot better shape after Obama was president then after Bush was president That cannot be denied

PaulE 1028am – Half the country has ennumerated the considerable “set of credentials (Obama) lacked.” Since these pages overflow with them, we need not restate them here. And yes, the credentials he lacked have by past generations been taken by the voters as prerequisites for office.
Since both presidents had opposing party Congresses during their last terms, what benefits and boo-boos do you attribute to each of them individually?

Paul, George said Obama didn’t have the qualifications to be dogcatcher in Resume Speed, IA. That might be true.
The qualifications for president revolve around being a natural born citizen above a certain age, and getting the votes of the electors to win the election. No other experience or training required.
Most believe Obama met the requirements for holding orifice, and most think Trump met the requirements.
    Back to the show.

Can you explain what you mean when you wrote Obama “had the correct racial underpinnings as our first Section 8 president” On it’s own it means nothing. Section 8 is a financial assistance program for poor folks to help subsidize their rent. What does that have to do with Obama? Exactly what is a “section 8 President” anyway?

PaulE 128pm – It is widely accepted by the Right that Obama’s race played the deciding factor in his being elected, since his other qualifications ranged between meager and absent. In other words, if a lily white with those qualifications had run against McCain, he would have gone down in flames. Race played the ‘set aside’ role in voters’ minds (hence the Sec 8 metaphor) that, absent other desiderata, got him into office. It somewhat amazes me that you have not known any of this, whether you agreed with it or not.

Here are the numbers for 2008 and 2012
2012 Obama had 365 electoral votes, McCain had 173
Obama had 53% McCain had 46% (rounded off) of the popular vote
Those numbers are considered a landslide.
In 2012 McCain picked up a little but was still soundly defeater
    Electoral votes 332-206
    popular vote 51-47& Rounded off
These were substantial victories George. Your contention that Obama’s race was the deciding factor in those elections seems far fetched. I’m surprised you have attached yourself to that opinion.

OMG! Attached to an opinion even the left alleges? The economy smoked under Bush until the very end of his term. And all that was caused by your pals in Congress forcing banks to lend to people that were not able to repay a home loan. My goodness, retreads are just boring. As far as Obama winning and securing the white liberal guilt vote? Very documented. So once again PE makes stuff up and passes judgment from his “white privilege” positions.

Well,As predicted the left in America has spun the anti-American antics of these NFL players and owners into a “race” thing. So what’s new? Nothing of course. I have watched them do this with puppies and kitties too. If you have a difference of opinion with the left, it cannot be legitimate. It must be you are a bigot, racist etc. My my. Sort of like that third-grade kid on the softball field who thinks he deserves the “ups” when you are next. And if you don’t let them have it, you are a racist pig.
Sorry liberals, you are wearing your welcome out. Why can’t you take responsibility for your actions? I mean hey, I do that every day. No one handed me anything, I worked hard all my life for the little bit I have. And I never blamed a Mexican or a black person when I had travails. But now I hear from these ingrates they are mad about the flag and the National Anthem and “white privilege”.
What you whiners forget is we all worked for what we have. But if someone breaks the laws and gets caught they have to pay the price. You may go to the hoosegow. So if you don’t want to go to the hoosegow what advice do I have for you? Don’t do the crime! If you want to succeed in America play by the rules. Just like you have to in the NFL game. If you break the rule you get penalized or tossed. Lesson learned.
If a policeman pulls you over, be courteous, don’t talk back and do what the officer tells you. If that is too tough, I say remember you dad might have taken you to the woodshed for any show of disrespect of him. So get smart. Don’t break the law. Get a job. Take advantage of the free education we give every kid in America. Hell, it is FREE! Isn’t that nice?
But whining all the time about how the “man” is dissing you gets you absolutely nothing in this country. We prize hard work and respect. Take personal responsibility for yourself and stop blaming others. I am not a racist or a homophobe or a misogynist. I do my best to be fair and get along with others. But your whining and blame gaming has grown thin. If this country and its laws and people are not your cup of tea, I suggest researching others that may be to your liking. I am sure we can help with the travel costs.

Well, I reckon all eyes are still not on the knellers by now. MSM averaged something like 56 minutes of the NFL-Trump reality show per 23 minutes covering Puerto Rico. What can I add to the conservation? Not much. Heard fans are burning jerseys, a quiet Veterans Day NFL boycott, the usual stuff.
BOTTOM LINE: This NFL millionaire boys club spectacle was just a grain of rice that tipped the scales for me. The death nail to any hope of having a color blind society. The libs and media won’t stand for that!!! Alas. The Dream was just a dream.
