NFLkneeingMore and more NFL players, owners, and managers started showing their disrespect for one of our nation’s most hallowed totems – The Star-Spangled Banner.  They chose to do this for a number of political reasons starting with protesting alleged police brutality.  And in doing so they have the temerity to claim that their acts of disrespect are not unpatriotic but intended to show “unity”.  That’s bullshit.

Whatever their sentiments are about civil rights violations and governments’ overreach, they have many other ways (e.g. a protest patch on their uniforms) to exhibit their feelings that need not desecrate the totems of our unique and special nation; hallowed symbols that have gathered Americans for generations to visibly demonstrate to each other that ‘e pluribus unum’ works and is the underlying rationale for living civil and productive lives together.  And in such unseemly public acts these people also dishonor those many who have given life and limb to defend and preserve those symbols of our nation.

If these people – ungrateful millionaires all – choose such overt and crass actions to demonstrate their unity, then to me and mine they have come together to achieve different ends through means neither of which I condone nor can unite.  When they knee our national anthem, they are simply cranking another notch ratcheting toward our Great Divide.

[27sep17 update]  Jason Riley in the 27sep17 WSJ (here) covers today’s national anthem brouhaha, and brings up a couple of points with which I happened to agree and did not include in the above.  As a youngster, Riley’s Jehovah’s Witness religious teachings did not allow him to salute the flag or honor our national anthem, which he first started doing as a teenager when he left that church.  JWs were often persecuted (beyond shunning) by their neighbors for these omissions which highlighted their different beliefs.

A relevant 1943 SCOTUS ruling stated that government or any of its agencies (e.g. public schools) forcing someone to salute the flag was unconstitutional.  More cogently, the court held that “saluting the flag is a form of utterance and that the right to not speak is as equally protected under the First Amendment as the right to free speech.” (emphasis mine) And “to believe that patriotism will not flourish if patriotic ceremonies are voluntary and spontaneous instead of a compulsory routine is to make an unflattering estimate of the appeal of our institutions to free minds.”

Now critical minds will understand the difference between public enforcement and enforcement of private sector policies of which the kneeling athletes are in violation.  And, of course, all of us are free to shun anyone on any grounds as we please.  (At least we had that freedom during the progressives’ bad old days; today things are not so simple anymore.)  We don’t have to watch them play or buy their sponsors’ products.  As I stated above, I and mine are of a mind to do exactly that with anyone who disses the good ol’ US of A.

In the end, “team owners and NFL officials will have to decide whether to continue indulging such behavior on company time, but the larger question is whether what is being protested has some basis in reality beyond anecdotes and viral videos on social media.”  And here Riley points out the most ludicrous part of the current kneeing epidemic – their putative casus belli, as I pointed out above, is existentially bullshit.

Why?  Because all available data from national and regional police databases show that police-involved shootings have dropped drastically in the last decades while the allegedly afflicted populations have grown enormously.  Riley quotes the relevant stats, and correctly concludes – “An increase in press coverage of police shootings isn’t the same thing as an increase in police shootings.”

The President of the United States singled out one NFL player who isn’t even on a team to rally the troops. It was a calculated move to further drive a wedge between the base and everyone else. Mission accomplished.

That player who isn’t playing also, by a number of reports, didn’t bother to vote last November.

The rules are found on pages A62-63 of the league’s game operations manual:
The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.
During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses. 😉

I suppose the attempt to blame the whole thing on President Trump is both lame and expected. No doubt, the progressives’ correct response would have been for our president to kiss rather than metaphorically kick their collective asses, something that would have suited Obama to a tee. Instead our current president did the opposite, and spoke up for the rest of the country – those of us who watch these demonstrations with sad repulse.

There are plenty of people who believe the players have a 1ST Amendment right. Well guess what.. They are wrong.
Their fist amendment right stopped when they signed a contract.
The Bill of Rights refers to the Government. Not a private employer.
Doug tried to make that fly last night. (went down in flames)

This will come back to bite the NFL.
These players forget who makes their paychecks.(the fans)
Most people respect the flag, the National Anthem and those who died protecting it.
No more games on the tube in this house.
The fans sure were NOT happy yesterday.
Even if 1/3d of the “fans” throw in the towel, that is going to sting like a kick to the shins.

Those spoiled brat millionaires didn’t get where they are by being lazy. They worked their asses off to make the big leagues. You know, the free market, baby. Last week, maybe a handful of them were concerned about Kapernick taking a knee. Not one team would sign him. Thanks to the President of the United States, he now has multiple teams and owners in his corner.
Like I said before, it was calculated to divide and distract. While healthcare flounders once again, there must be circuses to keep the troops fired up. Otherwise, they might start to wonder why they voted for these bozos.

The spoiled brat millionaires have no idea about the nation they are disrespecting. For all of their talents, anywhere else they wouldn’t make a tenth of what they’re pulling down here. And yes, it’s due to markets that some of us are still trying to keep as free as they are today. But the headwinds from our politically correct collectivists are considerable.

    “…and ignorance”
Let’s see – he’s built a multi-billion dollar empire, had his own TV show, gives away more money to charity than you could ever earn in an eon, pays more taxes than you than you would ever in a thousand years, gainfully employs hundreds of people – and oh, yes – I do believe he’s the president of the United States. Despite running against the status quo of both parties and being vastly outspent and being constantly lied about by the MSM and folks like you.
    And Boardman is…?

Poor performance as not the issue on Sheriff McGinnis’s radio show today. McGinnis said he stopped watching the 49er a year ago after Kaepernick took the knee. Most of the caller agreed with McGinnis, no mention of performance. True this is just several data points. As a vet, if I watched football, I would quit watching the NFL. You might want to check with the Vets about your performance meme for the 49ers.

Three is a direct correlation between the NFL ratings tanking this and last year and that looser CK taking a knee. I wonder how long it is until the owners and Godell remember they have a Federal anti-trust waiver? Fail to honor the vets and first responders at your own risk billionaire owners and millionaire players. 😉

Those who denigrate Trump’s qualifications for president are usually those who saw no such deficits in Obama, a man who had absolutely no credible resume for even becoming dog catcher of Resume Speed, Iowa. And yet he assumed the highest office in the land because he projected a handsome, well-spoken (albeit abysmally ignorant) figure. And, of course, he had the correct racial underpinnings as our first Section 8 president.

The arrogance of the losers on the left is breathtaking. Did they celebrate Castro’s takeover in Cuba in 1959? Probably. All those great unwashed guerillas were the left’s heroes. And most were simple farmers. My my. And Trump is so stupid according to these lefty brainiacs that he became a billionaire with a recognizable worldwide brand. Yep, he is just a stupid man according to the lefty losers.

    Head to your safe spaces,
”’In the 1950s, the Baltimore Orioles, of all teams, decided that playing “The Banner” before every game cheapened its impact. The general manager at the time decided that he was going to only play it during special occasions.
The Chicago Cubs owner felt the same way. And he did not play “The Banner” before every game until the ’60s, during the Vietnam War. And even in the 1960s, the Chicago White Sox experimented with substituting “God Bless America.””’

PaulE 645pm – Can you think of any other job that involves competing at a public event attended by 50K – 100K Americans? (Feel free to throw in the Olympics which has perhaps the most lavish display of commonality that launch the games.)
For those unclear on the concept, at public events people holding a shared belief or sentiment have always had an opening ceremony that involves some visible demonstration of their commonality. Pledges, anthems, salutes, etc have served that function in ALL cultures. Today the globalist progressives working hard to destroy such manifestations of sovereign diversity use every opportunity to denigrate shows of shared patriotism and/or shared beliefs. The common predictor of such criticisms from the Left, as that of Mr Emery and his cohort, is to examine the tenets of A21 – if the activity does not conform, then it is deigned to be anywhere from foolilsh through unnecessary to repulsive.
Re BunBun 1258pm – We note the Alinskian use of ‘Snowflakes’ to refer to right-leaning commenters. These predictable patterns are precious to behold.
