[This post invites the continuation of the lively comment thread on the expression/suppression of ideas that started in the 10aug17 Sandbox.]

So what happened yesterday in Charlottesville?  We know that a coalition of white supremacists got a permit to demonstrate against the relocation of a Confederate statue, and that leftwing counter demonstrators showed up to protest the protest.  Violence ensued – instigation unknown, results tragic.  Megaphones from all sides have now blared into action.  From the Left and lamestream, the answer to all questions is again unimaginably simple – it was once more the fault of the ‘rightwing racists’ who were egged on by Trump.

And the remedy for it all is even simpler – use government force to deny those deemed racist, nationalist, etc the right to demonstrate in public forums.  Even such good Christians such as Dean Ashford at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (here) and rightwing national commentator Erick Erickson (here) promote such a response to outlier thought and speech.

Before any left-leaning readers get their undies in a bundle, let’s first dispose of the race issue – RR, nor any of its readers to my knowledge, espouse the notion that one race or another is superior.  Counter arguments to this – such as ‘yes, but we know what you really think’ – have been made by leftwingers with bankrupt debating skills, and, no doubt, will be made by them again.  However, RR has strongly argued that cultures are not only different, but also of varying nature as to the quality of life they have provided and continue to provide for their adherents.

As stated here many times – I am a child, student, and defender of Western culture.  Western culture is not static, and has benefited greatly through its liberal mien, over the years by adopting ‘best practices’ from other cultures with which it has come into contact.  And I also believe that people all over the world, who have adopted major tenets of western culture, to that extent they have benefited and enriched their lives.  But today Western culture is suffering a purposed collapse, and the reactionary white supremacists are abetting this downward spiral.  Erickson’s wider appraisal is here germane –

The regressive ideas of the white supremacists in Charlottesville have no place in America any more than the censorious totalitarianism on display last week at Google. They are all from the same strain of secular uncertainty rising as Western cultural certainties collapse.

But to be productive, these debates/discussions should attempt to achieve a common understanding of what ideas can be professed, and by whom in public forums (which include the online media) and in the workplace.  To me the First Amendment prohibits the suppression of free speech, especially ‘speech’ deemed unpopular, by the government AND by citizens who are offended by such speech – that is simply the cost of doing the business of maintaining our American republic.

It is through the open competition of ideas that western culture flowered and continues to increase our enlightenment, and the enlightenment of all societies.  And it is through the suppression of peaceful competition of all kinds – including in the arena of ideas – that will sound the death knell of western culture.  (more later)

[update] Well, this little missive has drawn a bit of ire from our neighbors on our left.  I received an email quoting one of their leading intellectual lights demonstrating his knowledge of American history by taking to task the content of my opening paragraphs.   Thereof he claims that I have written “a bunch of alt-right revisionist, great divide driving, bastardization of American history.”  Fortunately, for the sake of expediency, the depth of his reasoning is both flawed and shallow.  Starting with the name of the 1860-65 conflict, the man has little knowledge of the century plus debate in the learned circles of our academe about the true nature of what the various factions of the South and North sought to achieve.  Here is a reference from Wikipedia citing the legion of authors who have discussed and debated the affair.  Given his age and many responsibilities, I really don’t know how to advise the man about remediating his education, especially concerning his views about the bastardization of American history.

[14aug17 update]  ‘Why were the police held back in Chalottesville?’ is being asked by people concerned about the conduct of the authorities during last weekend’s demonstrations.  Actually, there is a large faction in the country that is not asking, does not want to know, and/or already knows.  The answer to the question is not all that hard to puzzle out – just think about who benefitted from the police being ordered to stand down to let the counter demonstrators confront the white nationalist demonstrators.  When this Virginia town’s response is compared to what has happened in other towns like Berkeley, it is clear that Democrat authorities are now basing their use of police intervention on first satisfying their political agendas.  Strongly invite evidence to the contrary.

PaulE 1221pm – Why cite comparative numbers of killings by Stalin and Hitler? Easy; Hitler’s ideological descendants number in the hundreds, and Stalin’s number in the millions. Moreover, Stalin’s (and Mao’s) ideological descendants are still in power across the world, and more so in America. Next question please.

The Nazi/KKK kontingent are less than a round off error in the polling, Paul. This is just you and yor’n propping up David Duke and friends as the face of the GOP despite being rejected by all. Duke wants the publicity and you’re just grabbing handfuls of crap to fling into the fan, hoping it will splatter in a favorable pattern. Anything to pull down Trump’s poll numbers, eh Paul?
Those assholes have been doing that demonstration thing for several weeks but only this past Saturday did the Antifa f*cks show up to kick some butt while the police were apparently told to stand down. Nice job of it, too.

OK Paul,, how many arrests of Tea Party attendees were made? How much property damage? And the big one. The cost of cleanup after the fact? Your supposed to be a news guy,and have those figures at hand.

I really don’t see that many “Godwin” copouts anymore. Maybe it is because Godwin proclaimed in Dec. 2015 that comparing trump to Hitler was totally appropriate and now he is saying, in reference to the demonstrators in Charlottesville, “by all means, compare these shitheads to Nazis, again and again, I’m with you.”
Just think of all the meaningful, appropriate, and necessary discussions that were avoided for which another excuse must be found.

Still waiting for the self proclaimed protector of the environment call for tearing down the Mother Earth raping machines in Nevada City, aka, the Pelton Wheel with its bastard father of all whores, the hydraulic monitors. My his silence, we can safely conclude that Punchy hates Native Americans, thus just another liberal racist. By his silence we can conclude that Punchy condones the rape of the environment. It’s not like he does not look at the Pelton Wheel darn near every day, yet speaks not.

I worked for a cousin of Pelton himself, a manager at Cisco. I’d denounce him if it would make the local regressive Progressives treat me nice, but it would only last as long as it would take for another virtue that would again require signaling.
I bought a fine copy of Quotations from Chairman Mao circa 1974 for a buck from the college bookstore. Real ChiCom stuff, beautifully printed on low acid paper and a translucent red vinyl cover. Is still perfect. A number of engineers I worked with on Crown Point Circle who were forced to study it in China in their virtue signaling study groups were incredulous when I brought it into work to share with them… “Where did you get this!?”. Exactly like their books… only in English. They had not seen one in years and never translated.

Hmm. They do say (historians, those odd keepers of the printed word) ….historians say the most inaccurate accounts of history are newspaper accounts. And they have been saying that for many many moons. Wonder what future historians will think of all this fakenews? They will just dig deeper to what past historians have said (stated above) and conclude there is nothing new under the sun.
    Greogory:
Did you have a copy of the Little Red Book?? Fun fact: During the start of the Black Panther Movement at where else but Berkeley, the founders of the movement and early members were just some starving students. They needed so cash fast to help get the cause going…and to mostly to eat and pay rent cause they were way low on dough. So, they were outside at the entrance to the campus and a couple ran across the way to a bookstore. They bought a bunch of the Little Red Books (very small paper sized tracs with sayings of Mao) and went back in front of campus to peddled them to the little flower power peace and love hippie kids attending the Birthplace of Free Speech. That is how the word got out that the Black Panthers were aligned with the Communist Party. Heck, they never even read the words of Mao inside the little booklets. They just bought them for a quartet and sold them for a dollar. :). That Commie rumor gave them instead street cred.

Yes GR according to the Guinness Book of Records, the greatest mass murderers of our time we’re Russia and China….Important members of our United Nations world order. The stirring up violence we are witnessing more and more is the same old tactics used over and over last century. The far left and far right are the same totalitarian mentality…big government that owns everything the slaves produce. The “change” our last President promised that got him elected twice before he retired as a millionaire. His qualification and experience to be President was “street demonstration organizer” necessary to change America. Kind of a bad joke on all those who voted for change, but never asked what change he had in mind. Well, what we’re beginning to witness is apparent and predicted by those who understand totalitarian pschycology. Divide, destroy and change. It’s too bad people don’t realize all that our Constitution and Bill of Rights has the power to unite America and protect us from one another. But those who swear an oath to uphold it aren’t keeping it. Violent, destructive demonstration are illegal and terrorism.

For every action action, there is an equal reaction. This Doc saw it coming years ago.
“Swain said the white nationalism movement took off — long before Trump took office — because whites were being marginalized and disenfranchised after decades of affirmative action and other government programs designed to benefit minorities.
Adding to the disgruntlement is the constant browbeating by academia and the media — which are 97% liberal — calling ALL white people racist and claiming they have no right to complain about anything because they have “white privilege.” Look around you: There are plenty of poor, underprivileged whites.”

In other news, talk of tearing down the Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC is being tossed around….again. Maybe Mt. Rushmore is safe for now. Maybe. Rushmore is one heck of a work of stone art, a long strenuous labor of love. Hopefully we can agree on that, if nothing else. But, I seriously doubt it.
Rather than show pics of all the statues torn down by the Nazis because they found them offensive or wondering why BLM was not condemned by Obama for celebrating the assadianation of cops, I will simply say……
One can’t change the past, one can’t change history. Remove all symbols and monuments from our dark nation’s dark chapters, burn books, destroy all visual reminders, quench all talk or mention of it, rename holidays such as Colombus Day and Thanksgiving Day, refuse to teach our history in schools, yet the history remains. A thousand years from now, the history still remains.
No other country in the history of mankind has gone to the extreme measures and bloodshed to right its wrongs. 600,000 soldiers died in the War Between the State’s and who knows how many civilians. No other country, past or present ever comes even close. Yet, that fact goes unmentioned, except in the circles I run in.
Finally, it saddens me that our SJW’s graduating from college today have completely rejected the ideas and ideals of Dr. MLK. The melting pot idea, the color blind society goal is antithetical to the goals of today’s new progressives. Sad.
