[This post invites the continuation of the lively comment thread on the expression/suppression of ideas that started in the 10aug17 Sandbox.]

So what happened yesterday in Charlottesville?  We know that a coalition of white supremacists got a permit to demonstrate against the relocation of a Confederate statue, and that leftwing counter demonstrators showed up to protest the protest.  Violence ensued – instigation unknown, results tragic.  Megaphones from all sides have now blared into action.  From the Left and lamestream, the answer to all questions is again unimaginably simple – it was once more the fault of the ‘rightwing racists’ who were egged on by Trump.

And the remedy for it all is even simpler – use government force to deny those deemed racist, nationalist, etc the right to demonstrate in public forums.  Even such good Christians such as Dean Ashford at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (here) and rightwing national commentator Erick Erickson (here) promote such a response to outlier thought and speech.

Before any left-leaning readers get their undies in a bundle, let’s first dispose of the race issue – RR, nor any of its readers to my knowledge, espouse the notion that one race or another is superior.  Counter arguments to this – such as ‘yes, but we know what you really think’ – have been made by leftwingers with bankrupt debating skills, and, no doubt, will be made by them again.  However, RR has strongly argued that cultures are not only different, but also of varying nature as to the quality of life they have provided and continue to provide for their adherents.

As stated here many times – I am a child, student, and defender of Western culture.  Western culture is not static, and has benefited greatly through its liberal mien, over the years by adopting ‘best practices’ from other cultures with which it has come into contact.  And I also believe that people all over the world, who have adopted major tenets of western culture, to that extent they have benefited and enriched their lives.  But today Western culture is suffering a purposed collapse, and the reactionary white supremacists are abetting this downward spiral.  Erickson’s wider appraisal is here germane –

The regressive ideas of the white supremacists in Charlottesville have no place in America any more than the censorious totalitarianism on display last week at Google. They are all from the same strain of secular uncertainty rising as Western cultural certainties collapse.

But to be productive, these debates/discussions should attempt to achieve a common understanding of what ideas can be professed, and by whom in public forums (which include the online media) and in the workplace.  To me the First Amendment prohibits the suppression of free speech, especially ‘speech’ deemed unpopular, by the government AND by citizens who are offended by such speech – that is simply the cost of doing the business of maintaining our American republic.

It is through the open competition of ideas that western culture flowered and continues to increase our enlightenment, and the enlightenment of all societies.  And it is through the suppression of peaceful competition of all kinds – including in the arena of ideas – that will sound the death knell of western culture.  (more later)

[update] Well, this little missive has drawn a bit of ire from our neighbors on our left.  I received an email quoting one of their leading intellectual lights demonstrating his knowledge of American history by taking to task the content of my opening paragraphs.   Thereof he claims that I have written “a bunch of alt-right revisionist, great divide driving, bastardization of American history.”  Fortunately, for the sake of expediency, the depth of his reasoning is both flawed and shallow.  Starting with the name of the 1860-65 conflict, the man has little knowledge of the century plus debate in the learned circles of our academe about the true nature of what the various factions of the South and North sought to achieve.  Here is a reference from Wikipedia citing the legion of authors who have discussed and debated the affair.  Given his age and many responsibilities, I really don’t know how to advise the man about remediating his education, especially concerning his views about the bastardization of American history.

[14aug17 update]  ‘Why were the police held back in Chalottesville?’ is being asked by people concerned about the conduct of the authorities during last weekend’s demonstrations.  Actually, there is a large faction in the country that is not asking, does not want to know, and/or already knows.  The answer to the question is not all that hard to puzzle out – just think about who benefitted from the police being ordered to stand down to let the counter demonstrators confront the white nationalist demonstrators.  When this Virginia town’s response is compared to what has happened in other towns like Berkeley, it is clear that Democrat authorities are now basing their use of police intervention on first satisfying their political agendas.  Strongly invite evidence to the contrary.

Well, this statue protest thang is what the Lefties live for. It’s the best thing that could have ever happened to them and for them. It’s really gets them going and they can spout moral outrage til the cows come up and denounce, denounce, denounce. Oh, I can feel their chests getting all puffed up from here.
Makes them feel all superior and gives them the upper hand on winning the Enlightenment agrument. They truly espouse the Greater Good. They have evolved to a higher atrulistic plane. Perfect timing, just when they were feeling all down about themselves, being rejected across the amber waves of grain in election after election. This is the one opportunity to get their message out! They have been granted a second chance! Glory, glory, hallelujah, the truth goes marching on.
Well, I guess I will go along to get along. Toss them a bone. “I am sorry, so very sorry”. Actually, it’s a no brainer. Who in their right minds wants to be on the side of bigotry, hatred, and intolerance? Nobody. So, to make them all happy, I will say it again. “I’m sorry, so very sorry.” Ah, I feel much better now. The burden has been lifted and I see the light.

Hard to debate someone like Paul Emery who reads our denials of support for the loons and says we support them. How is a person loike Emery, educated in America, as dumb as his writings appear to be? The divide I see is caused by him and his ilk for their insistence we agree with them we are all those terrible things they say we are. In my opinion, I blame Emery and his ilk for all the discord as I got to see his pals slicing and dicing people in Berkely this year. But I guess those were my lying eyes?

Paul at 11:11 – No, Paul – this wasn’t just about a city council decision to remove a statue. That may be the sparking point, but the grievances and hurts run a lot deeper than that on all sides.
And you call yourself a newsman? What a laugh. You just keep your grey old head buried in your tiny little left wing bubble.
This is about agitators and race hustlers and grievance mongers and the politics of never-let-a-crisis-go-to-waste on BOTH sides.
The trouble has been brewing a long time and unfortunately the Democrats and the left see fit continue to stir the pot and continue to pick open old scabs to make political scores. Most every American of African background in this country certainly know all about the history of race in this country. Some have decided to use it as an excuse for poor behavior. Some have decided to move on and take advantage of the blessings of living in this great nation.
There is nothing in this country that negatively affects people who are not Euro descent that will be remedied by the removal of a statue. There is much to be gained by the creation of new statues to honor new heroes.
There are those of us who wish to move forward together in this country united by a sense of pride in what was birthed in this country and carried forward by the sacrifices of all Americans. That doesn’t mean we have to agree on everything, but it does involve the cessation of idiotic feuds involving the actions of those long dead. There’s plenty of blood and sin on the hands of all sorts of actors in all of this.
The ones who will not forgive will be the ones to carry the hurt and pain.
That goes for all of us.

re: Charlottesville – harbinger or just a temperature reading?
Since the streets have been owned by the Left for decades now any sort of opposing force of size is noteworthy.
Given the volatile mix of an overpopulation of both elites and workers combined with the death of civic engagement over time (various reasons: decrease in organized religion, mass immigration, mobile society, smaller or no families) it all seems like harbinger to me. Maybe I’m just seeing patterns in clouds. It’s easy enough to graph average wages vs. consumer prices, overproduction of elite (college degrees, size of government, etc.), wealth disparity, against increased social unrest and see multi-generation patterns take place. This might even be a bad one.
OTOH, perhaps our AI Overlords will sweep all the pieces off the table.

If Nazism was sent to hell as others have posted here and elsewhere, how does one explain what happened in Charlottesville? Those people were not flying the Stars and Stripes. There were armed militias. It looked like Berlin in 1933. How else does one explain why a person would vote for an obvious racebaiter like Trump whose whole campaign was based on anti-muslim anti-latino hate rhetoric? How is that any different than anti-Jew? Blaming immigrants for the country’s economic and social woes brought about, not by government regulations or farm workers, but by greedy stockholders outsourcing American jobs to lower labor costs and increase profit, is the same blame game despots have used for centuries to cover their own asses and suppress resistance.
Claiming to be anti-nazi will not get you off the hook for supporting the politicians who encourage the behaviour you are claiming to have an aversion to.

    re: Anyone else.
Since human nature hasn’t changed much, except perhaps for the growth of large trust groups (ie. larger than extended family), I’d say that the main reason behind outsourcing was opportunity. A combination of the componentization of work and the ability to cheaply ship goods. I’ll argue that the device producing the largest change to the world at large, even including computers, is the shipping container.

Another example of a liberal (Paul) praising the democratic process as long as the process produces results in line with what the liberals want. The city council has the right to order the statue torn down and the city council also owns the responsibility to deal with the expected trouble that ensued. Why couldn’t the city council just leave the statue alone and actually do something productive for the poor of the city?

Free speech means supporting a person or groups right to openly express themselves and peacefully protest and organise against what they feel is or might be oppressing them.
Supporting that right doesn’t mean supporting their cause.
This is probably way too intellectual for Paul. A tiny left wing mind wanting simple tiny little answers.
The white supremacists had every right to arm themselves against the violent left. Recent history has shown that the govt will give free rein to the leftist thugs to assault and beat the folks they don’t approve of.
