[I and several readers have noticed that mud-slinging bouts in the sandbox occur in waves, but recently these have come at an increasing pace and with longer durations. The resulting comment streams are difficult to parse for those readers who don't give a crap about the kindergarten tit-for-tat antics; it just makes it harder for everyone to find the substantive comments that contribute to an interesting topic thread. In the past I've had some success stopping these episodes by just excising the offending comments. The problem is extra work for me because sometimes a comment starts out with a thoughtful/substantive proposition and then ends with a mudball, or vice versa. I will solve this problem by just eliminating the entire comment and let the writer determine the profit in reposting a more civil version of the removed. gjr]

Okay Don take e back then to justify your statement:
“Keeping the Iraqi military units relatively intact, paying them and letting their officers handle the disarming and then using them for civic reconstruction is a proven model.”
When where? Korea, WW2? WW1? Grenada? Cuba? Civil War? Spanish American War ? When where? Show me the “proven model” you tout.

Apparently you agree that that model did not occur in modern times so when did it happen? Korean War? WW2? WW!? Spanish American war? Letss try Panama, Grenada? Civil War? Spanish American War ? When When When Don?

Walt, never hurts to pull a Reagen and toss a bomb in Colonel Gaddafi’s bedroom window at 2:00 am at 600 mph….and flatten his top military official’s house while you are at it. This should make the Lefties, Neo-Cons, and the doves happy. No children were hurt and we punched ’em in the nose. Bet that airfield looks like a big slab of Swiss cheese. Military or political decision? Don’t really matter at this point. :).
In other news, welcome Haley to being tarred as a Deplorable. Come on in, the water is warm. And to think she never once endorsed Trump to the bitter end. Ok, she refused to endorse Trump, but she voted for him. Close enough.

For Walt
<WASHINGTON — President Obama abruptly changed course on Saturday and postponed a military strike against the Syrian government in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack so he could seek authorization first from a deeply skeptical Congress.
In one of the riskiest gambles of his presidency, Mr. Obama effectively dared lawmakers to either stand by him or, as he put it, allow President Bashar al-Assad of Syria to get away with murdering children with unconventional weapons. By asking them to take a stand, Mr. Obama tried to break out of the isolation of the last week as he confronted taking action without the support of the United Nations, Congress, the public or Britain, a usually reliable partner in such international operations.
“I’m prepared to give that order,” Mr. Obama said in a hurriedly organized appearance in the Rose Garden as American destroyers armed with Tomahawk missiles waited in the Mediterranean Sea. “But having made my decision as commander in chief based on what I am convinced is our national security interests, I’m also mindful that I’m the president of the world’s oldest constitutional democracy.”
Authority was denied

PE, Obama didn’t need congressional authorization to whack Assad for using WMD. He was looking for a reason not to do it. Interestingly, the appropriate Senate committee approved airstrikes on that occasion, but Dingy Harry didn’t even bring it up for a vote. Hmmm.
Scenes let the cat out of the bag, but yes, Japan. Much better known was the same decision made in Europe. Marshall and the other giants that walked in those days used the de-Nazified German Army to maintain order in post-war Germany.
And an excellent choice- a couple million trained, reliable and highly disciplined men who otherwise might have turned to political mischief to oppose the occupation.
This would have been the correct solution in Iraq as well- those soldiers of Saddam needed to eat as much as the next guy and sending them home jobless could (and did) only lead to trouble.
It would also saved us the trouble of creating a whole new army from scratch, which we are in the process of doing right now in Mosul.
Looks to me as if ISIS is not long for this world… L

Go for it Walt. A casual look back will find Obama was asking for approval but when it was obvious he didn’t have Republican support he withdrew his request and did not bomb Syria.
Heres more:
“n 2013, President Barack Obama asked Congress for military authorization to intervene in Syria after a similar chemical attack. But Republicans in Congress said no.
House Speaker Paul Ryan was among them. Under Obama, Ryan said any response from the United States over Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons would be a “feckless show of force,” adding, “Syria’s civil war isn’t our fight, but we have a stake in the outcome.”

Obama launches 2,800 strikes on Iraq, Syria without congressional approval
U.S. forces have now surpassed 2,800 strikes against targets in Iraq and Syria under President Obama’s war against the Islamic State, all as part of a conflict Congress has yet to specifically authorize — and amid worries lawmakers won’t ever act.
Under intense pressure from Capitol Hill, Mr. Obama finally submitted a draft authorization for the use of military force against the Islamic State in February, but it’s since languished, caught in the stalemate between those who want tighter restrictions and those who want the president to have as free a hand as possible.
Now analysts worry that inaction will set a dangerous precedent and leave Congress shorn of its warmaking powers.
Yup. “O” did it first, so no bitching and whining that Trump has done the same.

“National Security Adviser Rice touted the “success” in Syria, in striking a deal with Russia’s help that resulted in the prior administration dropping the threat of military action.”
“In July 2014, then-Secretary of State John Kerry went on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to discuss the September 2013 deal that resulted in Russia agreeing to help confiscate and then destroy Syria’s stockpile.

Is that a stampede I hear? It bears repeating that the Grass Valley Charter was near the bottom of their 100 Similar Schools list before the STAR testing and API reporting was abandoned by the State despite having one of the highest parental education levels of any county public school. Like the Yuba River Charter (that actually was at the bottom of their Similar Schools list once the school that was even worse, another Waldorf Charter, closed), they learned that to survive spending public monies teaching virtually nothing, you’d better cherry pick the kids allowed to walk in the door.
