All sorts of news outlets, save the lamest of the lamestream, today report that Fidel has written Obama an ‘up yours’ letter subsequent to our president’s obsequious visit to Cuba. You can bet that this from-the-sidelines message was Raul’s idea.  Add to that his Tango Trip to Argentina, is there no one in the celestial pantheon willing to give this man even a smidgeon of a foreign policy accomplishment that the rest of us can put in the plus column?

Speaking of letters, someone wrote a letter on a Chinese news website suggesting that President Xijiping should resign. As a result over ten people have simply disappeared as Chinese authorities hunt for the letter writer (more here).  It’s always good to remember that we are dealing with Red China when considering them as a partner for mutual benefit in any international effort.  No matter their recent ‘liberalization’, China is still a very fearful totalitarian regime that finds it hard to hide its true colors (from all except our progressives).

As if more evidence were needed to confirm – Government is an intrinsically evil collective, cynically organized, incompetently operated, and staffed by people not all of whom are evil.  For this reason alone, citizens must keep their governments small and always on a short leash. please examine this long festering atrocity detailed in ‘Why Americans Hate Government’. Beware of those among us who seek to enlarge the Leviathan; their numbers continue to grow.

A Taliban Easter present to Christians was delivered this weekend in a Lahore park where over 70 celebrants were killed and hundreds wounded (more here). The local raghead organization took credit in the name of spreading the religion of peace.  To keep track of how this religion inspires hundreds of thousands to murder and more millions to (sometime not so) quietly nod in approval you can visit a non-partisan website that keeps track of the daily murders.  Anyone keeping track of how America kowtows to Islam?  Anyone not keeping track?

[update] On the matter of consciousness Kurzweil opines that “We do have essential questions. Is the brain a computer? Does it process or generate conscious information as output?  When, where, and how did consciousness evolve? Can we have free will, or are we just “go along for the ride?” … Will consciousness be reproduced through brain mapping, transhumanism and/or artificial intelligence? Or, does the brain “tune into” and organize consciousness or its precursors existing naturally in the universe? What are the implications of either view on the nature of existence, and treatment of mental and cognitive disorders?

The Science of Consciousness has now emerged as a recognized field of enquiry that unites scientists and philosophers in an uneasy cooperative. All of this will be hashed out at this year’s April conference in Arizona.  Meanwhile ‘Testing to Start for Computer With Chips Inspired by the Human Brain’.  More here and here.

[29mar16 update]  Our president speaks to the world.

If you kill enough of them, they stop fighting. Curtis LeMay
I missed meeting General LaMay by a couple of days, his replacement General Powers had just taken over the leadership of The Strategic Air Command. My crew had been invited to HQ Sac to meet the Commander. It was a big disappointment at the time, I was looking forward to meeting General LaMay, who was a true warrior General.

So what is the role of a small short leashed government? Small gov.’t seems to assume low taxes. If so, what are the priorities for determining spending, after all, that’s how gov’ts function, tax then spend? In your vision of a small short leashed gov’t., what services are provided, ie. how are tax dollars spent, who gets regulated and who doesn’t? Does such a government have a large defense department and a small consumer affairs dept., does it build highways or aircraft carriers, does it still inspect for food quality and safety or is it buyer beware? etc. etc. etc.

RobertC 1130am – Mr Cross, you here join the lightly read commenters who firmly believe that such notions emerge from and are the singular domain of RR. The size and scope of government as a portent of evil was recognized by our Founders, and it has been extensively debated in the public fora since WW2.
Yet perhaps, for people unfamiliar with the concepts, it is time to reprise the discussion during this election year when we have a proto-communist running for president, and a sitting president who tells the world that ‘there is little difference between capitalism and communism’ while advising his audience of young people to ‘just choose from what works’.

Here is a simple question for RobertC. (maybe two or so) You own your own home?
If so, should you need a permit (from the government) to do simple repairs?
Should the county inspector be sent out to see if you put nails in the proper (gov. code)
distance apart? Or to see if the railing is dead nuts to mandated height? (GOD help you if it’s 1/16th of an inch too short)
Do you know you need a permit to replace one damned piece of wood? That’s the gov. LAW buddy.. So is that a little too much government in your book?
I know this first had. You don’t want to know all the shit you need to “legally” do just to replace that one board, or the cost (permits and other required bullshit) before you “legally” pull that first nail.
    Isn’t government great?
At least you don’t need gov. permission to wipe you butt.(yet)

Sorry Doc for the off topic. (the litter box done runneth over) But it seems Gov Moonbeam
is giving us 15 dollar minimum wage. MORE government for Robert to digest. (still like big gov.?) Soon only the 15%ers will be able to buy Ca. grown veggies. Just wait for the layoffs. Four will be fired for every three they keep. You will be checking your own purchases at the stores. One person watching six checkout stands.
    Isn’t gov intervention great Robert?

Mr Cross is asking the type of questions a leftie would ask. He assumes all govt is the same – fed, state, local etc. And what is proscribed for one would be verboten for all.
The founders made it clear the fed govt would be a strong, but limited govt. No funds should be spent by the feds for purposes of wealth transfer. The clear purpose of the fed govt is to protect us and ensure our civil rights. The fed govt is not to favor any person or business entity in any way, shape or form over another.
The state and local govts are free to hand out whatever they want and they will have to come up with the funds to do so with their own money.
The fed govt should come up with an honest budget of what it costs to operate every year and divy it up by the number of American adults. All American adults would have to pay that amount. Once the shock of that bill wears off, we could expect congress to get to work getting rid of most of what the fed govt spends money on. We would, of course, have to add on an extra 10% to help pay off the existing debt in a timely manner.
The local govts can come up with whatever sort of tax schemes they wish and if the folks living in high tax states don’t like it, they can move to a low tax state.
It would be helpful if folks working in govt and corps were not immune from personal liability and criminal charges for cases of illegal actions. And no govt should be able to bypass double jeopardy by using civil court action. No govt should be able to fine anyone more than a nuisance fee or seize any money or goods without a criminal conviction against the owner. An exception would be for evidence being held before trial.
None of the above will lead to a perfect world, but would lead to a better world.

    RE:update on consciousness
George, I just had a long conversation this weekend with a PhD Anthropologist who has been commissioned by a major research group to develop “culture” programming for robots. It was a fascinating casual conversation at a family gathering I was invited to. they apparently want different cultural programming depending on whom the robots are designed to serve.

PaulE 746pm – Yes, those are very interesting conversations with the faction that still believes that super-intelligent machines will be programmed by humans. Unfortunately no one has a clue about how to program emotions, planning, common sense, or culture. The best that can be done and passed off as machine intelligence is a set of canned ‘if-then’ rules of behavior that hopefully will make the human believe that the machine has some mysterious inner sense of a given culture and then fashions behaviors from such an inner sense. However, such efforts may well help sell responsive household assistants in the near term.

The WSJ article,”Why Americans Hate Government”, is pretty lame(stream). A petty-minded bureaucrat using his position to exact revenge on someone – what?! Unheard of! Not exactly breaking news… You could go into any micro bureaucracy (a school district, for example) and find incompetent, backbiting, self-serving, power hungry personnel.
You could say the same thing about why Americans hate big business (and their lawyers) – they do the same kinds of things to insure dominance over the competition.
A better (fair and balanced) “Why Americans Hate Government” article is here,

BradC, I have personally experienced revenge and it happens all the time inn regulatory government. The place is full of those that were not picked for the team and they will extract their piece of revenge for the slights. It is truly petty of course but that is why government is so rotten now.

But keep trying, little fella’ – you might stumble onto something I hadn’t seen before and I really do like to keep abreast of the news.
As to the robots being programmed for cultural differences: yes – that’ll be an interesting chore in allowing for ‘acceptable’ differences vs non-PC cultural norms. Microsoft has already seen what happens when you allow A.I. to go for a walk in the cultural woods without mommy and daddy right at hand.

BradC 707am – Actually not. This news item was the topic of the lead editorial of one of, if not THE, most read and respected newspapers in the world. It is only “lame” to cynical big government types who see this corruption as the cost of doing central planning and control as the greatest good for the greatest number. To the rest of us it is simply what Leviathan must inevitably become.
And Mr Croul, the only big businesses that Americans have a love/hate relationship with are those that can only survive through corporatism – the only kind of ‘capitalism’ that progressives promote – that requires the government gun to “insure dominance over the competition.”
Finally, Zakaria’s ‘fair and balanced’ piece cartoons the attitude of Right while white-washing or ignoring what the Left promotes in government. But in the end he does corroborate every word of my “Government is an intrinsically evil collective, …”, and that is the point.

The false premise of tax cuts for the job creators to spur economic growth is a crock of Shiite. ie, Trickle Down Economics. Hillary and Bernie have been very successful with it as a campaign issue. Hell! Gov. Moonbat and the Ca. LIBS are doing just that to Ca. with this 15 and hour min. wage crap. Getting a raise “jon”? someone with only 15 employees will need to find another 150 thousand a year to keep them all working.

Those with jack shit for experience will stay unemployed. Just because someone went to school just isn’t going to do it. Just wait for the “social justice” folk to bitch even louder. Be careful of what you wish for.. you just got it. Just wait till you try and find a place to eat you can afford. Even in Nevada City. Good luck just affording McDonald’s.
