Today in the 21mar16 Union columnist and RR reader Mr George Boardman reminds us of the tautology that members of our 99% also avoid accountability. He corroborates this with an anecdote or two, as if any were needed.  Very little thought already reveals that the population which overwhelmingly avoids accountability resides in the 99%.  I think this point could have been made a bit more explicitly to underline Mr Boardman’s ‘No need to be among the 1% to avoid accountability’.

But what I took exception to was his description of “DeVry University, a publicly traded company that specializes in signing up students to loans they may or may not be able to pay back.” The FTC’s jaundiced ruling notwithstanding, this private educational enterprise does not specialize in Mr Boardman’s claimed practice any more than do the hundreds of public colleges and universities across the land.  Unpaid student loans now exceed $1,200,000,000,000 (that’s T like in trillion) and are overwhelmingly owed to government run lenders making it easy for government run colleges that lure students into costly degree programs that teach students skill sets they cannot sell in the labor market (more here and here).  [H/T to Mr Gregory’s 736pm below for the correction.]  The only ones hiring those so victimized are the various agencies and bureaus of our governments where competency in something useful is not a requirement.  Mr Boardman’s singling out a for-profit university for such umbrage is misleading at best, and patronizes our softheaded socialists at worst.

Joel Kotkin, R.C. Hobbs Presidential Fellow and columnist, writes a major piece prognosticating the dismal future of the GOP and Hillary’s potential launch of our own Third Reich. He sees the formation of a third party as a political palliative, but does not seem to understand that political stability requires at least four political parties to span the ideological spectrum.  Nevertheless, the worthwhile read concludes with a view of Hillary’s administration and the Democrat Party dominance –

In this way, the rest of the country will increasingly resemble what we already have in California – a central governing bureaucracy that feels little constrained about expanding its power over every local planning and zoning decision. The federal republic will become increasingly nationalized, dispensing largely with the constitutional division of power.

Centralism, as known well in California, comes naturally to a one-party state. Businesses, particularly large ones, faced with uncontested political power, will fall in line. How many times have I heard California business people, even supposedly powerful ones, tell me they are frustrated with Gov. Jerry Brown’s increasingly draconian rule but sheepishly add that they are too afraid to say anything.

Looking ahead, the only hope lies in a mounting reaction, perhaps manifesting in a new party, to over-reach. As Clinton works to serve her “families,” like public employees, crony capitalists and the academia/media PC police, she could ignite a rebellion not only among the Trump constituency but also many more moderate, suburban voters who find Trump too crude, divisive and unpredictable.

This new movement should be built around the idea that, in the information age, power can, and should, devolve to localities as much as possible. Even Californians prefer local, as opposed to centralized, control. This could spark a widespread populist rebellion which, in 2020, could finally tame the federal Leviathan and allow American politics to return to something the founders may have envisioned.

[update]  George Soros has given Gov Kasich $700K for his campaign.  'What are we to make of that?', he asks with tongue-in-cheek.  Talk about strategic investments that Trump and Cruz should highlight.

[22mar16 update]  George Boardman has restarted his NC Roadkill blog.  I went there to welcome him with – Welcome back to the blogosphere Mr Boardman. Ruminations is proud to post a permanent link to NC Roadkill. gjr – but my comment is still "in moderation" so I thought I'd repeat it here.  Perhaps Mr Boardman is having second thoughts as to what time eaters these blogs are; I hope not.

LOL “jonnie”!! “You are who you associate with”
Need a reminder list of who “O” paled around with? Saul Alinsky, Bill Ayers, etc.
You sure know how to step in it.

But “jon” as a resident of a remote area of Yuba County around Pike, you fit your example best. My guess is you have some guns, a patch and some booby traps and probably head to the local tavern for a drunken funfest every Friday night. Have I got that pretty close?

Jon is still stuck with My Gal, lol. It can’t get any better than that. She has expensive tastes, so open that wallet Jon and spend, spend, spend. I can’t believe you are going to wear a big gold godly HRC as your bling. Jon is stuck with Hillary, Jon is stuck with Hillary, Ashes, ashes, they all fall down.
Hey Jon, I would never worry about your brand, ever. And the Dems (your brand) aren’t even running a get out the vote camping this time around. Seems that would help Bernie and your brand is not the least interested in Weekend at Bernie’s welfare. The fix is in. The corruption is set in stone. Love your brand. No surprises like watching paint dry.
Let see now. How in the heck are you going to slip Hillary past the voters in November? It’s not even April and her Secret Weapon (hubby) was been pulled from the campaign as he is starting to ramble incoherently. Maybe two weeks of rest will help him get his Mojo back. Maybe not. Yanked.
Let’s seen again. HRC’s outreach plan to the younger crowd is her handpicked daughter to bring home the bacon. Unfortunately, Chelsea the millionaire is speaking to groups of 75 supporters and run out of campus appearances. College campuses are “enemy territory” when it comes to the First Baby Girl. Great plan.
No worries about Jon’s brand. It is sooooo predictable and underwhelming in its depth.

Tozer, stuck with Hillary or Bernie – either one will beat Drumpf in 2016. Mark the tape. Guaranteed.
A social democrat trying to reform a severely broken capitalist system wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

When ever you say “mark the tape” “jon”,, it comes back to bite you in the ass.
So for you batting a thousand in being wrong. The last time you “marked the tape”, you said Trump would have quit by now. Your weegie board is broke. Better get a new one.

George, student loans are owed not to the colleges, but to the makers of the loans… nowadays, that’s entirely the Federal government. A student doesn’t get to attend classes until they have the money in hand.

Tozer, how would anyone know who will be a great President before their term ends and historical record? Would anyone have imagined President Obama becoming such an important President in US history, with such a string of meaningful accomplishments for our nation…and…unheard of favorable ratings at the of his term? Compare that to GWB!
75% of Americans do know that Drumpf is a crock and a joke, and are prepared to vote for someone preferable. Wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to carry on, and enhance, the legacy of a very popular predecessor.

Oh, please please Jon, list all of O’s accomplishments, please! Foreign policy? Race relations? The debt? National Security? The budget? Having his illegal going around the legislative branch blocked by the courts?
Ok, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for that beer summit with the cop and his former professor. Besides that, please list this string of Meaningful Accomplishments for our nation. Rounds of golf do not count. Hmm, like backing the Muslim Brotherhood to overthrow Egypt? The reset button with Putin? Come on Jon, I am all ears. Please, list the meaningful accomplishments. Start with the $2,500 saving every family will see under Obamacare and how Obamacare will not only pay for itself, it will reduce the deficient. “Won’t cost you a penny more.”
Ok, that is two. Obamacare and the Nobel. I will let you list the rest.

re: the discussion on school loan debt.. I find it interesting that most of the conversation seems to point the finger at public institutions for the student load debt crisis. Automatically blaming government/public entities seems to be the norm round here, while downplaying/ignoring other evidence to the contrary. Corinthian Colleges Inc., of which Heald College is the most notable, was recently fined over $1.1B for fraud. The judgment will provide debt relief to thousands of former students (mostly poor) who got caught in the con. This judgement sheds some light on the shady business of for-profit education which seems to be largely nothing more than a glorified student loan scam as most of the for-profit institutions’ revenues come from student loans. The judgement against Corinthian cited the following:
From at least 2009 until the closure of its schools, many of CCI’s representations and advertisements related to job placement were untrue and/or misleading. In numerous cases, the placement rate data in CCI’s files show that the actual placement rate is lower than the advertised rate. The placement rates that CCI published were systematically false, misleading, erroneous and/or failed to comply with applicable state and federal regulations and/or accreditor standards. In addition, many of these published placement rates could not be substantiated using CCI’s own internal placement data and files.
CCI did not offer ultrasound technician programs, x-ray technician programs, radiology technician programs, or dialysis technician programs in California. Despite this fact, from at least 2010 until the filing of this action, CCI ran millions of ads stating that they did offer those programs. CCI executives knew that these false ads misled students.
CCI unlawfully used the official seals of the United States Department of the Army, the United States Department of the Navy, the United States Department of the Air Force, the United States Marine Corps, and the United States Coast Guard.
CCI’s enrollment agreements contained unlawful clauses.
CCI engaged in unlawful debt collection.
CCI failed to discloses its role in the Genesis Private Student Loan Program.
CCI misrepresented the transferability of credits.
CCI misrepresented its financial stability to students.

RobertC 1003am – Mr Cross, you are most correct that “around here” we do indeed take government and public institutions to task, but not “automatically” because the evidence for cause is overwhelming. Your singling out CCI for the cited infractions don’t match what public institutions do, institutions which are not even examined for getting students in debt over their heads for degrees that leave them patently unemployable.
Apparently what you missed is the fact that the overwhelming part of the $1.2T student loans were paid to public institutions for what any reasonable analysis would show to be fraudulent educational product. Your analysis also missed the now well-known practice of the the public institutions raising their tuitions in concert with government programs that increase the availability of student aid. It is a vicious cycle that no lamestream dare report.
Your picking out a for-profit that was appropriately dunned as a counter example will not support your implied thesis. Please see the link in today’s ‘Ruminations’ post about what government did to Decker College, another happening invisible to progressives and the lamestream.
