Former AG Mukasey on MSNBC drew our attention to certain paragraphs of US Code, Title 18. Section 2071.
a) Whoever willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, or destroys, or attempts to do so, or, with intent to do so takes and carries away any record, proceeding, map, book, paper, document, or other thing, filed or deposited with any clerk or officer of any court of the United States, or in any public office, or with any judicial or public officer of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
(b) Whoever, having the custody of any such record, proceeding, map, book, document, paper, or other thing, willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies, or destroys the same, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both; and shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States. As used in this subsection, the term “office” does not include the office held by any person as a retired officer of the Armed Forces of the United States.” (emphasis mine)
We await FBI Director Comey’s finest hour.
Union publisher Jim Hemig writes a cordial salute (here) to his predecessor Jeff Ackerman upon his retirement from the Swift newspaper ‘empire’. I knew Jeff and considered him a friend as we enjoyed our coffees and lunches when I was one of The Union’s regular columnists. At that time Jeff was serving as both publisher and editor of the newspaper after informing the former editor that he was redundant. I’m sure that many of RR readers join me in wishing Jeff a long, healthy, and productive retirement – after all, the man does have trouble sitting still for long.
Muslim migrants are bused to Berlin to protest Angela Merkel’s relocation policy that forces small German towns to resettle thousands of counter-culturated economic refugees seeking to make better lives and establish more Islamic enclaves in Europe. The protests are not to halt the flood of migrants, but to devote more federal resources to provide for the new arrivals. Meanwhile, New Year’s Eve revelations gave rise to many more reports of sexist attacks on women from other European capitals and cities with significant Muslim populations. All this is happening in a background of rising law suits by EU member countries that refuse to admit more refugees while attempting to halt illegal border crossings. At the same time the American Left maintains its insane stance of inviting unvetted and unvettable Muslims to live among us.
[16jan16 update] The 16jan16 Union published ‘Swansong from an Alternate Universe’ which I submitted in a slightly edited version (here). Those of who are lifelong scribblers for fun and profit always like to have their voices heard by wider audiences. As a member of that crowd, I am no different. So I again thank the Union’s publisher Jim Hemig and editor Brian Hamilton for sparing some timely real estate for one of my diatribes.
In ‘Europe’s New Medieval Map’ Robert Kaplan of the Center for a New American Security presents a clear, coherent, and compact review of the tremendous changes now occurring in the EU, and how we are belatedly recognizing them without yet knowing how to come to terms with the new reality that will affect us much more than what is happening in east Asia. Longtime RR readers have been introduced to most of these notions and ideas over the years. Dr Kaplan’s piece is a scholarly and readable update of how Europe has come full circle since the days of Charlemagne.
Piling on, 'The European Disunion' is another analysis with similar conclusions from the Council on Foreign Relations published in Foreign Affairs.
"Liberal Professors Outnumber Conservative Faculty 5 to 1. Academics Explain Why This Matters' reports recent data from a Washington Post survey. We continue to be amazed at how many liberals, especially of these foothills variety, who continue to dispute this ideological predominance now firmly ensconced for decades.
Iran continues playing Obama like a violin. In a few days we will lift economic sanctions on Iran and hand it $150,000,000,000 to continue building its nuclear arms and support global Islamic terrorism. Iran appears to have been playing nice by capturing, embarrassing, then releasing ten American sailors in the Persian Gulf, and then swapping four long-held American hostages for seven Iranian terrorists and promise to stop chasing 14 more of them. Our lamestream is dutifully reporting just one side of that to make Obama’s case that we have pulled off a successful nuclear deal with Iran. The astute American knows this is one more big National Lie that the administration is rolling out.
Iran shipped some unknown percentage of their moderately enriched uranium to Russia, and disabled 7,500 uranium enriching centrifuges. While Obama and Kerry are leading the happy dancing, no lamestream outlet tells America that these numbers mean nothing. Why? Because we are not allowed free and immediate inspections of Iranian nuclear weapons facilities, and we have not required Iran to certify any baseline amount of enriched uranium or numbers of operating centrifuges that had to be part of the agreement. The numbers they quote are meaningless; as meaningless as when Hillary or the IRS announces that they have released so many thousands of emails or pages of documents to congressional investigators. Only progressives and gruberized Americans swallow such pabulum. Yes Virginia, we really are that stupid. (more also on Gitmo exchanges here)
