George Rebane

We have been told forever by the Left that our county’s Board of Supervisors is a non-partisan governing body.  No one believes it, especially our progressives, but the message must be repeated endlessly to the county’s light thinkers.  The existential fact is that the supes are all partisan and readily exhibit their individual ideologies during their terms of office.  I always get a kick out listening to someone argue that they are among the pure and untainted when they assess and evaluate social policies – ‘I don’t care much for politics’, ‘I’m not an ideologue; I make my decisions on the merits.’

Today we are gearing up to elect three new supervisors next year.  Nate Beason, our senior and three-term supervisor from District #1, will (sadly) not seek a fourth term.  His seat will be contested for by the very liberal Heidi Hall, and the (best that I can tell) left-center bike shop owner Duane Strawser.  This leaves a yawning spot for someone of a more conservatarian bent to also throw their hat in the ring.  Actually, someone obviously from the Right might do very well next November since there is a good chance that Hall and Strawser will then split the Left vote.  But as we all know, election season brings out the political chameleon in those seeking office.

Mr Strawser may wrap himself in a new cloak for the coming year, and that will make things interesting.  I am not familiar with the man’s voting record during his turn on the Nevada City city council.  But given the perennial silly season that that elected body has enjoyed over the years (decades?), a more conservative candidate could make it hard for Strawser to conveniently tack starboard during the coming months.  More knowledgeable heads about the county’s local governments should weigh in on this possibility.

In any event, the Nevada County BoS slots are very political, and whoever fills them will determine how much the county will bend over to grab its ankles when the diktats come down from on high.  And in the worst case the supes may go on a regulatory binge to save us all again from climate change, chemical food additives, pedestrian safety, hate speech, various forms of marijuana, low cost housing, and fatty foods.  It has happened before, and today we are in a much weakened state when it comes to welcoming more of leviathan’s tender mercies into our lives.  Just look at the highly educated yokels demonstrating on our university campuses.

BenE 1042pm – I am heartened that your health is improved to the point that you are able to take on the rigors of running for elective office. I personally encourage your candidacy, especially for the District 1 congressional seat. You would again bring the voters a strong alternative and a new direction for their consideration. I do hope you run.
ToddJ 702am – We have to remember that when a progressive elite says it is so, it does indeed become ground truth for them. Existing evidence to the contrary is either ignored or redefined by semantical fiat, and no new evidence need be considered since debate is over. And the beauty of that approach is that it has a great track record with the gruberized.

I encourage Ben Emery to run for the District One Supervisor seat. Since he has told us endless times he cannot stand the D’s and the R’ I would encourage him to bring his “independent” politics to the local level. At least he stands a chance. I got moew votes in my race for Assessor in 1998 than Ben did as a candidate for Congress, district wide. So his strength for a possible victory is much better locally. Run Ben Run!!

What is it about these liberals like Frisch who fail in the real world and then fancy themselves as experts in everything under the sun. Would that be called “hubris”? He was a flop at cooking but can tell us all how the climate works? Jeeze, no wonder he gets no mind from the podunks.

    Greg,
Ron Paul and Gary Johnson are two big national names and I would call Gary Bryant, Donn Coenen, Jedediah Biagi libertarians at the local level. Andrew Napolitano is a national personality that is a true libertarian.
Does that help you out. I voted for three of the four candidates in that group named. I have never had the chance to vote for Ron Paul but I would if I had the chance. The other two haven’t run for any public office that I know of.
Rand Paul is a libertarian when convenient and what that part of him steps forward I usually applaud his actions and words.

    Todd,
Trying not to be insulting here, so bear with me. There are many reasons to run for public office other than winning the seat. There is virtually no chance of a non republican to win our congressional seat in its present configuration. In January 2010 it was mentioned on either KVMR or NPR that Tom McClintock wasn’t being challenged for his congressional seat. There is a long story associated with this but I will summarize it, my wife and many in the NCDCC encouraged me to run despite not being registered as a Democrat. It was news to us when a former Republican from Florida moved into the US CA 3rd district decided to pull papers for the US CA 4th District after being in CA less than 30 days. To the best of my knowledge he moved back to FL before the end of December 2010.
I was running to try and get people to understand how horrible and dangerous of a decision Citizens United was for the US. Also to try and expose McClintock’s real purpose for being a Northern California representative, securing water rights for his former district in Southern California. The problem was it had to be done very carefully and it could only be done in a public forum with media outlets present. Since the FL Democrat refused to drop out McClintock didn’t have to show up to a single forum/ debate. He attended Tea Party rallies outside the district instead letting his constituents here him debate the issues, incredible and incredibly insulting. He spent over $1.5 million in that election cycle.
I obtained my material from a former Sacramento Bee reporter who covered the capital and water for much of McClintock’s 20 plus year career in the state legislature.
McClintock is a bully, I cannot stand bullies.
As for Supervisor I would rather not split any vote for somebody on the left side of the aisle, which it seems both Hall and Strawser are coming from. They both have experience and good intentions in helping out the entire community not just the business community. I am content right now concentrating on remaining cancer free, catching up with work and house maintenance for both my own and parents homes, and trying to help my parents out with a progressing Parkinson’s disease.

Oh Ben, do you lack the resolve to fight them bullies with all your heart, all your mind, and all your soul? Sounds like all the other stuff you mentioned above is pushing out your fight to defend the powerless and fight injustice everywhere with all your strength this fall.. Your triumphs are astonding and you will leave Nevada City a better place than when you found it. Amazing. Your handiwork can be seen everywhere in America, especially in St Louis and Baltimore and Brooklyn. Forget the parent’s house and let it fall apart. Your work is not finished yet. You need to catch the first flight back to St Louie, thumb a ride to Fergenson to meet with BLM….er…the other BLM like in Blood Lines Matter, then take a cab to Mizzou where you will be chased out of The Safe Zone, white devil. Your support or appearance is not welcomed, unless you shut your trap and pull out your checkbook, white devil. They hate you Ben, and Islamists hate you, Ben, but I have growth rather fond of your fighting for the oppressed by whatever you actually do besides yap about it.

Now I am trying to be insulting. You’re an idiot. I ran for congress and have given a list of very valid reasons I will not be running for supervisor. If no one else runs against La Malfa I will probably step forward to try and get the message of Amending the Constitution, corruption within both political parties, income equality, and climate change. The chances of unseating LaMalfa is slim to none from someone outside the republican party but that doesn’t mean positive gains cannot be made in the process.
I am not sure what district you live in but if in District 1, why don’t you either put up or shut up.

I choose to avoid District One, except the nice 174 corridor. Ok, Big guy, what exactly have you done about Widesptread Income Inequitiy found to be a Global fact of life? What exactly have you done to amend the Constitution? Name specifics of how corruption in both political parties have been impacted as a direct result of YOUR actions. What exactly have you done to prevent Global Frying besides yapping about it and whinnying no that was very business in the Brunswick Badin does not have solar panels on their roofs. Telql us how fighting your whole life to raise the standard of living of those in the hobo camps has helped one train tramp?
Ben, what results can you point to that has had a lasting impact on injustice, tyranny, and all things Bad?? You have been gabbing about your fight against The Bad for years and I see is you are long on talk, very very short on results. You lips are flapping but your hands are idle. What, you are making headway on the War of Words? Well, that strategy certainly is non violent to point out the silver lining.
Sorry, I am a meanie. I judge you on actions while you judge yourself on intentions. Get over your sorry self and get ‘er done.

Totally unfair Todd. You really are a pretty despicable person you know that?
Not only has Ben run for office, he has done and continues to do quite a bit of volunteer and leadership work even considering his recent illness. The measure of someones contribution is not running for office.
I may not always agree with Ben but to paint him as a big yapper who doesn’t do anything is just an outright lie.

    Well Todd,
I typed out a long response that got lost on my end. I will summarize it for you, You’re an Asshole.
I have probably volunteered more hours in my dozen years of living in the county full time than you have over entire lifetime. The difference from what I can tell anything you have volunteered for was to benefit yourself directly somehow, what selfish prick. My volunteerism is exclusively to help expand opportunities and services for others. From youth and school athletics to civil liberties to political activism to caring and fighting for the homeless to trying to peace not war to improve the environment that all of our kids and grandkids play in.

You libnuts always go nasty. But hey, I bet you are just a lib bloviator Ben Emery. You have no idea about me or my life. We on the right don’t make up all these good works like you do, so you just have to guess. Or like you do, enhance your skimpy resume’ I really feel sorry for you Ben Emery. Rather than telling the truth you come here with all those made up tales.
Paul Emery, I have until March to decide. I am in no hurry as I would trounce your pals. Just like I did when you were helping Jim Weir. Love it!

    Steve,
    Thanks and ditto.
    Todd,
Thanks for calling what I do “good works”, it is lots of time and energy that goes unappreciated many times but as my wife says “It is money in the bank that will benefit everyone later”.
Maybe one day when you mature and grow up you will understand the true gift of giving back.

Take it easy on Todd. He’s having memory problems. Thinks he ran against Jim Weir in ’94. Didn’t even live in his District. He’s kinda a folk icon in his senior years. i’d appreciate it if you gave him some slack.

I am fighting for the homeless as well. I bring them fire extinguishers cause they keep setting fires in the pine needles during a drought. But, I don’t carry their trash out. I figure they walk in the heavy bags of free food, they can walk out the empty bags. Besides, there are enough saps that go around cleaning up after them and follow them around with soft napkins to wipe the corners of their mouths when necessary. I give them fire extinguishers, others pack out their used toilet paper. We are fighters!!

    Bill,
Being on the board of directors, volunteering, being part of multiple homeless counts, and showing up to city council/ county public meetings defending civil liberties is a bit more than making an obvious disparaging remark towards the homeless. I hope it made you feel better for doing so otherwise it was a negative exercise all the way around.
    Todd,
That’s what makes your point of view so disappointing, you are an old fart and still don’t know any better. I am older with more experience in a number of areas than you were as a supervisor. You are a 65 year boy and immature cruel boy to boot.

    Frisch elsewhere:

So Russ just frigging lies John.
He uses quotes and omits detail in the quotes, places things in quotation marks that are not real quotes, lies about the meaning of other peoples work, projecting his own conclusions on them, and, like Todd Juvinall, lies and never ever acknowledges it, even when he is directly called on it with sourced material.
Welcome to bats shit crazy, Trump voting, right wing fantasy land.

Totally unfair Steve. You really are a pretty despicable person you know that?
Todd is on the unpolished side of life, a high school graduate that’s swung hammers (or supervised folks swinging hammers) far more than he’s taken pen to paper, and Russ is one of those “citizen-scientists”: you would be celebrating his work had he been doing substandard volunteer work for the likes of the wretchedly misnamed “skepticalscience.com” with John Cook who isn’t a climate scientist, either.
A lie is an intentional falsehood (you’ve had experience with those, Steve) and what John Mashey, PhD, (a BS/MS/PhD mathematician/computer scientist without any detectable background in the physical sciences) uncovered in Russ’ piece was what used to be called an error (at least those that weren’t arguably Mashey’s error in flagging them as “lies”).
If Russ is too easy, send Mashey over here, we can put up a worthwhile argument that will leave bruises. I’d suggest he first read Shaviv & Veizer 2003, Svensmark “Cosmoclimatology” 2007 and for a real hoot, Abussamatov (and I’m sure he can figure out which one is of interest).
Let Mashey know that “SkepticalScience” isn’t a peer reviewed journal of the physical sciences, just an activist website that keeps inconvenient arguments at bay, as closed to diverse opinions as Pelline’s sandbox; just referring to SkS is a cop-out.
