   Well, Jon, that was nice of you to be so concerned about the demise of The Grand Old Party. I appreciate your warnings that we have hitched our wagon to a falling star. Plus, that blog you posted said immigrants have rights. My, learn something new every day. Thank you for trying to save us.
   Oh Todd, I once read a piece in the Huff Post that was pretty good. It was about these giant aardvarks roaming around eating anteaters and how they never fart. Amazing story, so, yes indeed,, Huff Post has some good fish and nature stories now and then. Just as good as Mutual of Obama’s Wild Kingdom. Gotta give credit where credit is due.
   At least you got your heart back in the right place, jon, just not far enough right yet. We are working on you, Jon. Immigrates have rights. My, what will they think of next.
   In other news, Obama wants to take in 10,000 mostly single younger male Muslims of Jihadist age. Never happen. He once tried to bring in 1,200 and that caused outrage. Then he tried for 300 Syrians (yep, three hundred only) and that got tied up in committee. Oops, never say never.
   Get this guys and gal. 63,000 people have signed a petition to demand the USA take in 65 000 Syrians. 63,000 want 65 000 more. That is too funny. When millions upon millions of cards and letters flood the legislature and The Casa Blanco, then let me know. Immigrants have rights? Are you sure, Jon?

   For you grasshoppers out there, I have heard of annual predictions of GOP’s demise since Bill Clinton got into office. With this perspective the shared wisdom of progressives like Jon are simply sad to contemplate in the magnitude of their ignorance. But they have gone through the Great Society’s legacy of public education, and that is the best that they can do. Of course we all suffer the consequences. Pity.

   I don’t see a single redeeming feature with the Republican Party and that is since the Clinton era. The party has moved so far right or should I say reich that I think it could be diagnosed as insane. The only reason party reps get elected is due to the duopoly have made it virtually impossible to challenge them from the outside.

   BenE 802am – While our views on the existing major parties differ, I continue to believe that the nation would be better served by having a minimum of four parties – center right & left, more pronounced right & left. Both of our major parties today are trying to stretch their tents to cover ideological spectra that are too wide, and in the process they are ripping the fabric of their traditional roles. This is not to say that both tents have not been moved more in the process toward the ideological poles.

    What type of socialist? I would argue you are 100% a socialist and don’t even realize it. Services and infrastructure we take for granted are socialist programs. Saying the word “socialist” is used as a pejorative when if fact our entire country is based in socialism.
    My guess at your definition of socialism and the democratic party do not line up at all. 40 years ago yes it would would line up much better but today we have a conservative party(Democrats) and right wing party(republicans). Both are interested in assuring profits for industry and the wealthy off of the backs of the former middle class and working poor.

    As horrific as the 9/11 terrorist attacks were have you ever thought about how many 9/11 days of terror the US has inflicted on Afghans and Iraqi people? Maybe we should include the millions of innocent civilians who have been terrorized in consequence of the 9/11 attacks in our day of remembrance as well. It seems like the faith of proclaimed peace would extend our condolences to all the innocent in this disgusting holy war the US has mistakenly entered into.

    The fact that Donald Trump is the favorite among Republicans at this stage of the game is testimony enough that the party is not to be taken seriously. Unfortunately because the Libertarian party is impetant at this stage of the election Libertarians seem to have no place to go since Rand Paul seems to have disappeared. . The question is where do the Pubbers do to repair the damage Mr Trump will inflict on their Party? Should be lots of fun to watch for sure. Apparently the 35% of pubsters that support Trump don’t think that the Woman’s vote is important and they are so set in their rage that they don’t see the gift they are providing the Dems who love it. It should be an easy victory for the Dems once the smoke clears on what’s left of the Republican Party. Great fun all of this!!

Unfortunately you are not the first in these pages to exhort that interpretation; I believe each of your ideological colleagues have preceded you in similar error.
    And I also agree that your 236pm is out of line viz 9/11. It is simply the decades long battle cry of America haters, which you have every right to voice even on RR. For the rest of us, it just confirms what you are. But do take comfort in that you are not alone – and that is America’s sadness.
    (Perhaps one of BenE’s soul mates of yesteryear had similar feelings about 7 December 1941, and reminded his fellows how America’s opposition to resource-starved Japan’s Asian Co-prosperity Sphere in the 1930s caused untold suffering and even deaths among the impoverished Japanese in the hinterlands, deaths that could have been prevented by allowing them a more robust economy.)

    I am an observer in these matters and have already commented that there will be a likely Biden-Warren ticket for the Dems after Hillary declares she is not a crook and retires from politics (where have I heard that before). The Dems will have a much easier time healing than the Pubbers and will easily motivate their voters and have an easy victory. Trump is a unique character in American politics and the fact that he is the front runner in the Party shows how desperate the Tea party types, his core group, are for change from the status quo. There is no way he will gather the support of the powers that be (Chamber of Commerce, Big Corpa etc ) because he doesn’t seem controllable which is what they pay for. Biden is very much in their camp as is Bush, Walker etc. This will rear it’s ugly head when the TPP becomes an issue.
    By the way your guy Walker, the incredible shrinking man, is falling off the charts. What is your speculation as to why? The Repub ticket to watch is Kassick-Rubio which could win by pulling Ohio and Florida. Too bAd Rand Paul has no traction. the Repub-Libertarians have no where to go.

If a govt imposes an environment where there is only one feasible source to get certain benefits, and you and yours are forced at gunpoint to pay for those benefits, then you would be an idiot to deny yourself those benefits and suffer. The theory of the commons kicks in full force.
    But to then argue that if such a government is socialistic or communisitic or whatever, then its citizens availing themselves to the handouts are also of such an ideology, is in my view beyond idiocy. Even the people of the USSR didn’t think they were communists when working (all jobs were govt jobs) or getting nationalized healthcare (such as it was). The same went for Germans in the Third Reich who did not consider themselves to be national socialists when they partook of govt services, and the same truths hold in Cuba and Venezuela and … .
    Ben, I believe you are a good hearted man who is simply terminally naïve.

    Figure after Rodman chokes in Iowa, the Party Dems will break the fire alarm glass and go in full blown panic mode. That is when Joe jumps with in with Obama’s approval. So possible may or my not look probable after Iowa. She has 79 paid full time staffers there and the TV ads haven’t rolled out yet. She can bury The Bern on the airwaves and millions in cash. She has a Dem female point person in every county in the state. So, if she does not win big and actually loses, time to hit the panic button.
    Like it or not, those first 2 primaries set the media narrative of the candidates to the convention. Thus, it might happen. Shotgun Joe rides in to save the day. His mug will be on the next cover of Cracked magazine.

    I still think its great the State and Sac paused on 9/11 in the midst of a crazy end of session to stand together for the local boys and to commemorate the victims in NY,DC,93 at the start of the war. C-17 doing a low pass rocked. Got a good start on getting a handle on the mmj wild west of weed in AB266. Now the municipalities can move forward with guidance from the State. From the reactions in the grower communities web presence we know they are not happy, notwithstanding some last minute face saving comments that speak to working for amendments next session.

    Paul, I agree. Kasich and Rubio could govern fairly close to the middle and be a fairy effective administration if the Congress and Senate are balanced. It would not be the end of the world with that ticket. Rubio as VP would cut out his phony far-right wing postering he’s showing right now. He’s a pro immigration guy and moderate on a lot of things, being a Bush protégé. But getting through the crazies of the right wing primary is going to present a challenge for those guys.

    “See this gate? . . . Well, every night trucks stacked with bodies came back here and dumped them in a heap. They’d already been shot in the back of the head – you bleed less that way . . . They stacked the bodies in old wooden ammunition crates.
    “The workers stoked up the underground ovens – right in through the doors – to about twelve thousand degrees centigrade. To make things nice and official they even had professional witnesses who counter-signed the various documents.
    “When the bodies were burned they were reduced to ash and some chips of bone, maybe some teeth. They then buried the ashes in a pit . . . When the purges [of the 1930s] were at their peak . . . the furnaces worked all night and the domes of the churches were covered with ash. There was a fine dust of ash on the snow.”
    The Kalitnikovsky Cemetery in Moscow also served as dumping ground for thousands of tortured and executed bodies in the 1930s. That same Russian historian told David Remnick:
    “In the purges, every dog in town came to this place. That smell you smell now was three times as bad; blood was in the air. People would lean out of their windows and puke all night and the dogs howled until dawn. Sometimes they’d find a dog with an arm or a leg walking through the graveyard.”

    Before being sent to their death or to the forced labor camps, tens of thousands would be interrogated and cruelly tortured to get confessions out of people about non-existent crimes, imaginary anti-Soviet conspiracies, and false accusations against others.
    Stalin personally sent instructions to the Soviet secret police that stated that in obtaining confessions from the accused, “the NKVD was given permission by the Central Committee [of the Communist Party] to use physical influence … as a completely correct and expedient method” of interrogation.
    When Stalin was told that this method was bringing forth the desired results, he told the NKVD interrogators, “Give them the works until they come crawling to you on their bellies with confessions in their teeth.” Then, in another purge, this one after World War II, Stalin simplified the instructions even more: “Beat, beat and, once again, beat.”
    Thousands of the victims wrote letters to Stalin from their exile and hardships in the labor camps, all of them persuaded that it had all been a terrible mistake. If only Comrade Stalin knew, he would set it all right and they would be freed and restored as good, loyal Soviet citizens ready to once again work to “build socialism.”

    “I would come home from working in Stalin’s archives, and I would be deeply shaken. I remember coming home after reading through the day of December 12, 1938. He signed thirty lists of death sentences that day, altogether about five thousand people, including many he personally knew, his friends . . .
    “This is not what shook me. It turned out that, having signed these documents, he went to his personal theater very late that night and watched two movies, including “Happy Guys,” a popular comedy of the time. I simply could not understand how, after deciding the fate of several thousand lives, he could watch such a movie.
    “But I was beginning to realize that morality plays no role for dictators. That’s when I understood why my father was shot, why my mother died in exile, why millions of people died.”
    Soviet central planning even had quotas for the number of such enemies of the people to be killed in each region of the Soviet Union as well as the required numbers to be rounded up to be sent to work in the labor camps in the frigid waste lands of the Siberia and the Arctic Circle or the scorching deserts of Soviet C

    I think the last one may have been a bit unfair……after all bringing about a system that’s fair for all requires a stern hand…..eggs and omelettes don’t you know. To begrudge Comrade Stalin a little “me time” watching “Happy Guys”……well some people apparently just don’t get it.
    Still as the cherry on the Sundae perhaps the fair and even handed eye of the intellectual….surely he’ll have something positive to say about Socialism.

    Fish.. Ben believes the “new” Socialist is kinder and gentler. ( Nope that can never happen again… Uhhh,,, right??)
    Look what Kalif. was trying to do to us.. Mandatory fuel reduction by 50%. That means the GOVERNMENT will control what, and how much you drive. Then punish you accordingly if you don’t comply. How bout that Ben? The next step could be what you heat your house with.
    Jail anyone with a wood stove..
