[There is load of bad news coming down the pike on Obamacare in 2016. Most widely read people know the travesty that new entitlement has been, and the worst is yet to come. Our progressive readers have excused their happy dancing in the streets about Obamacare while citing how bad our healthcare system is in the eyes of the WHO. The siren song for all socialists is the vaunted 'nationalized single payer healthcare system' of which all the fine exemplars are said to be doing just fine in the EU. However, that is not the case, and already in 2008 Cato published their compendium of these single payer systems in Policy Analysis #613. And since then things have gotten considerably worse in the lands of 'free health care'. Worth a look before we order the confetti for the next Obamacare celebration. gjr]

Todd may have been a County Supervisor, but, as Mencken said, no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public. Like the women he dates, I think voters must have had a moment of guilt and disgust in the morning when he was done.
As a matter of fact I remember the number of people at the time who I knew who said, “the County just fuc#ed me,” which is why Truckee incorporated; because idiots like Todd took all our tax money and did not provide services.LikeLike

“Say that you remodel your kitchen, and don’t put in the regulated number and type of ceiling lights – you instead install the ones you like. The county inspector comes, informs you of your sin, and writes you up. You have so much time to get things remedied according to government dictates. You decide to keep the ceiling lights in your kitchen that please you. The inspector revisits, notices your recalcitrance, and cites you for the code violation.
Fast forward. The matter of your non-compliance is passed on to county counsel who brings suit against you which you choose neither to contend nor to comply to the subsequent judgment of fines, jail time, confiscation of property, or whatever the judge decides. Your continued refusal brings in the sheriff. You decide this is a hill worth defending and perhaps dying on. You arm yourself and a stand-off with the prompt arrival of the local SWAT team ensues. You wave your ‘assault rifle’ to indicate you are dead serious about defending your kitchen lights.
Since you will not permit anyone to enter your property, in due course the SWAT sniper puts a bullet through your window and kills you. Within the hour, the sheriff makes a statement of regret that things could not have been settled peaceably, giving all the why and wherefores of his attempts to do so. Bottom line is that they had to kill you since you were armed and judged to be a danger to society.”

Bottom line George, you chose the story to tell and the story is telling. It‘s the story of someone who doesn’t acknowledge that laws and codes are adopted by people who band together through democratic institutions to create social order out of the chaos that is normal in the human condition. Our framers understood this once.
We created an entire system of government in the United States predicated on the idea that we the people can influence and change the rules. We established institutions, a free press, free speech, the right to assemble and seek redress of grievances entirely on the idea that a balance between the individual and the state exists, that there are inalienable rights, that rational people can establish that balance. We elect the representatives, we empower them to create the laws, we have the power of due process to challenge those laws, legislatively, legally, and at the ballot box. If we decide laws are unjust we can change them.
Your scenario is effectively a fantasy where the crank defends this hill, of kitchen light fixtures, rather than exercising the tools available to him to change the rules.
What idiot dies on the hill defending his kitchen lights? Yet you chose that analogy, and to you that man is the victim and the hero. You chose to elevate alienation over liberty.
Free people organize, elect representatives, challenge injustice thoughtfully, craft new laws, and empower the people to construct their society. That is the American ideal we advanced and defended against communism, fascism, and totalitarianism; not the ‘baby state’ where every crying crank gets his way.
And this is where my contention that you are not, in the parlance of the conservatarian right, are not a ‘real’ American. You would rather wallow in your alienation against society. Every conspiracy theory you embrace, false flag you create, ridiculous hill you lionize defending, serves that alienation.
A democratic republic depends upon the active engagement of the people to govern themselves, while respecting others right to share in governance; in your case you are just a big baby, you want what you want, even if other more numerous or having a different world view want something else, and stomp you foot like a child if it does not happen. That is not democracy.
You would clearly be more comfortable in a world where “Rebane” was the center of the universe, which is the ultimate childlike fantasy.
Ben is entirely correct, what you advance is an [Ann] Randian virtue of selfishness that bears more resemblance to fascism than democracy.LikeLike

StevenF 449am – Steve, I believe you have demonstrated beyond doubt that you are totally uninformed about the system of America’s regulations and codes, their generation, application, and adjudication. Perhaps you are most naïve when you extol that “laws and codes are adopted by people who band together through democratic institutions to create social order out of the chaos that is normal in the human condition.” Nothing of the sort goes on in our country today.
You ignored my counsel on these pages more than once. I offer it to you again. Please read Charles Murray’s ‘By the People’ (2015) to get a glimmer of how our system of jurisprudence actually operates, and focus especially on the essentially subrosa part that deals with how generalized laws spawn the actual government strictures by which we must live, and then how they are enforced and adjudicated. It will knock off a considerable amount of the silliness from your collectivist interpretations and admonitions.
One of your most pronounced aspects of ignorance that you share with your fellow ideologues here is that every time you discover ideas expressed here that you don’t like, you and yours are so poorly read that you declare their genesis and embrace to be local to Nevada County. As I have advised before, you really do need to widen your horizons.LikeLike

Still believing the “text book” version I see….at least for public consumption!
George draws a causal chain of how something trivial can lead to the ultimate sanction and in order to defend the system you need to retreat to nonsense like this:
We created an entire system of government in the United States predicated on the idea that we the people can influence and change the rules. We established institutions, a free press, free speech, the right to assemble and seek redress of grievances entirely on the idea that a balance between the individual and the state exists, that there are inalienable rights, that rational people can establish that balance. We elect the representatives, we empower them to create the laws, we have the power of due process to challenge those laws, legislatively, legally, and at the ballot box. If we decide laws are unjust we can change them.
You know that the real meat of someones day to day existence is dictated by the unelected….the bureaucrat…..guys like you! You should read “The Ballad of Carl Drega” by Suprynowicz about a man who finally got tired of dealing with guys like you and went about remedying his situation through alternative methods.
Here, enjoy the “money shot”:On August 19, 1997, at about 2:30, New Hampshire state trooper Scott Phillips stopped Drega in the parking lot of LaPerle’s IGA supermarket in neighboring Colebrook for having too much rust on his pickup truck.[1] Drega got out of his truck with his rifle and fired upon Trooper Phillips. Trooper Phillips was hit but returned fire before retreating into a nearby field…..
While I condemn his methods I certainly understand the sentiment.
Wonder if that regulation is still on the books in New Hampshire though? You might also choose to read “From Freedom to Slavery” by Spence…..it’s been endorsed by all the right people and won’t get you uninvited from those Sierra Food, Wine, Art soirees that I’m sure you enjoy!
Hope you’re enjoying the vacation…..keep telling yourself how easy it is to fight city hall!LikeLike

I, of course, have read some Charles Murray. Although I have not read “By the People” I have read “Losing Ground” and “The Bell Curve”, as well as many of his columns in Commentary.
I think it is quaint George that you think that if people don’t agree with you it must be because they have not read what you have read, instead of the equally likely scenario that they have read much of what you have read and that they came to different conclusions.
With all due respect George, not agreeing with you and being a provisional rube are not synonymous. I a pretty well read my friend. My guess is better read across a broader range of subjects that you are. I am well read and well travelled enough to know that the particular brand of stubborn ignorance you possess is global. It is the ignorance of ego, of certainty, of parochialism, or intellectual chauvinism.LikeLike
-
Democrats and Republicans are neck-and-neck when it comes to moral turpitude, but only the Republicans claim the moral high ground defending family values, traditional marriage, and other so-called foundation values of this country. The social conservatives are so desperate to oppose same-sex marriage that they’ve taken up the cause of a Democratic county clerk who’s been married four times to three different guys and has had two children out of wedlock.
As for the cartoon, it reminds of Osama complaining after 9/11 that the infidels tossed the Muslims out of “Andalusia,” that is Spain. That happened in the 15th century. The immigration crisis may be part of larger plot to take back Spain and seize the rest of Europe, but I doubt the Arab world is organized enough to accomplish something that complex.LikeLike

re StevenF’s 205pm – we note the total sidestep of my 844am in his claim to have read “some Charles Murray”. The point of my comment contested his sophomoric view of how regulations are made and enforced – that response apparently went by the board. And these pages are replete with years of evidence that the Left, including Mr Frish, believes the views expressed and developed here are mine and mine alone. Were my opponents anywhere near as well read as Mr Frisch claims, their comments would reflect that, and address the more broadly held ideas instead of vilifying me as a howling lone wolf. But that is the Saul Alinsky cookbook response in such cases.
I don’t have any evidence from his writings of how well read Mr Frisch is, but let us just leave it that he has absolutely no clue of what my library contains and in the directions it continues to grow. Nevertheless, his simplistic implication is that since I am a technologist and scientist, my interests and exposure must be cartoonishly narrow. His hubristic statement of being “better read across a broader range of subjects” is a telling measure of the man.
In sum, he is a worthy piece of work, and a capable opponent of the land and life that at least half of America loves, and of which most of the other half is ignorant.LikeLike
-
GeorgeB 213pm – As to moral high ground, I do believe that Republicans have nothing compared to the Democrats – collectivists have always maintained their moral superiority (e.g. recall the USSR), and today the common attitude about America’s Right by its Left is that we are “evil”. Morality has always been the shield and sword of the Left that addresses everything from others’ beliefs about AGW to the selection of their kitchen ceiling lights.
Re Islamic colonization. Fundamental Islam is way more organized than what is required to inundate the progressive Europe of today. They have no choice but to conquer or die since Islam readily demonstrates its brittleness when exposed to the free-wheeling western cultures. And in their madrasahs and media they are taught about their historic mission which was interrupted in 1683. This so-called migration of refugees is a much more serious business than our historically innocent lamestream is able (or willing?) to fathom. Here’s a piece on this I wrote some time ago –

Talk about a ‘piece of work’, and being a hypocritical a$$, you called me poorly read [“you and yours are so poorly read”] and YOU have no idea what’s on my bookshelf. When you insult someone and they turn it back on you you don’t get to say they are a ‘piece of work’ for doing so.
Of course I don’t think the opinion you express here are yours alone–my point is that they are ignorant opinions no matter how many Charles Murray’s you can come up with to quote.
And I sidestepped nothing, I told you what Murray I have read.
But if you must know I know from working on codes and regulations that you are completely full of crap about how they are made.
The bottom line is I would cite sources and if you held people to those standards you would get a better quality of conversation. When I do cite sources people blather about posts being too long, and you countenance people telling fat jokes, shit jokes and threatening law suits [which was a trend original state by the Toddster].
As long as you have low standard you are going to get low content.LikeLike

StevenF 243pm – my references are a matter of record here. And so is my charge that you and yours are poorly read as I explained how that conclusion is reached in my 228pm op cit. The alternative to ‘poorly read’ is that you and your bunch are just cynical in your comments that claim the narrow provenance of my views. So take your pick – poorly read or assholes (I could also include the union of the two).
And since your position is that you will not be receptive to arguments irrespective of their cited breadth and depth (“no matter how many Charles Murray’s(sic) you can come up with to quote.”), I guess this conversation has gone far beyond its more propitious stopping point.LikeLike

fish 327pm – Well said. I would just add that our system has become so pernicious in so many of its aspects that it does take a major volume just list and explain what has gone wrong with how make and enforce laws. As an example, I am reminded again and again of the formalized ‘vox populi’ in California in which the people are led to believe they have a voice they can express in the propositions and referenda that are presented to them. They have no idea that one appointed judge sitting somewhere in the legal stratosphere can nullify that voice with the stroke of a pen. Just one example of legislation from the bench.

I confess I don’t like Debbi whatzername-Shultz. Never had, so my opinion of her is rather jaded. But, without reading one article in depth until now about the upcoming Dem debate between Haunika (sp?) and Christmas on a weekend night, I have my own opinions about why the restrictions on the number of Dem debates.
I believe it is designed to give Rodham less exposure to a confrontal setting where she might throw her hands up, get shrill, and say something like “What difference does it make!”. Rodham does not shine in those kind of settings, albeit The Bern sticks with policy only and is naturally a gentleman.
On the flip side, the restrictions on the number of debates also gives Rodham’s opponents less exposure to the public. The opponent(s) might look good or have some good ideas compared to Miss Status Quo.
I can understand the Democrat voters of New Hampshire wanting more than one mere debate before their primary, and that single debate is guaranteed to draw as few viewers as possible due to the calander. One might even conclude that the impartial head of The DNC might be laying down cover for The Inevitable One.
We must not be fair and evenhanded by granting the Also Runs equal time with Rodham. And we must not overexpose Hillary to uncontrolled questions.

I ain’t’ chuckling at you, I am laughing with you. No smiley faces as that is soooo under the bridge.
Yep, you can post 10,000 words and someone will take one part of one sentence as cry “Ridiculous! I have got him now” and we go from broad ideas about our ever changing (or declining) American Culture to a thread that goes on about a heated discussion about whether it is Constitutional to use rat poison if you own a pet. Deflection out the gate, especially if the elder Emery jumps in by the 2nd comment about something rhe had been thinking about for two days concerning a ticket somebody was wrongfully given in Bum, Egypt in his van down by the river. Ironically, the ones that strike their front hoof against the ground with head down in full charge readiness are the least likely to address the topic. Then if the Big Boy gets bored and decides to do a cannonball into the pool, ah…hell, I love it! Ain’t pretty.

But, without reading one article in depth until now about the upcoming Dem debate between Haunika (sp?) and Christmas on a weekend night, I have my own opinions about why the restrictions on the number of Dem debates.
Re the spelling of “Haunika “……I believe there are two currently commonly accepted spelling versions.
1) Hanukkah
2) Chanukah
As shown below (from Le Wik):
Hanukkah (/ˈhɑːnəkə/ hah-nə-kə; Hebrew: חֲנֻכָּה khanuká, Tiberian: khanuká, usually spelled חנוכה, pronounced [χanuˈka] in Modern Hebrew, [ˈχanukə] or [ˈχanikə] in Yiddish; a transliteration also romanized as Chanukah or Ḥanukah), also known as the Festival of Lights and Feast of Dedication, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.
There is also a third lesser used term……Happy Chaka Khan that comedian Dennis Wolfberg was treated to while on tour somewhere in the south.

We all know what they are going to say anyway, just a matter of who is going to raise taxes the highest to pay for more social programs. That’s the Dem Debate in a nutshell.
Having Bernie around gives the pretense that this facade is more than a one horse rodeo. Looks like a real nail bitter, Not!
Rodham was everything to lose and nothing to gain by getting into a gabfest on live TV. Besides, why give the lowly contenders a chance to strut their stuff.
Rodclam says she is all for more debates. Yeah right. That is why her team lobbied so hard (negotiated in PC speakese) to have the first debate smack dab on the eve of the New Hampshire primary. No time to recover and no time for early voters to change their minds. She just has to sit there in soft pink all pretty above the fray smiling real like and one year from today she will be your Party’s nominee. The rest is just going through the motions without all the enthusiasm. .
Darn Jon, I am more outraged by the DNC’s unfairness and tricky slight of hand than the Dems are. Must be my moral compass guiding me to rail about injustice. Truly, this sad chapter in the DNC sorted history is downright unfair. Pity those whom the DNC silences their voices. I feel your pain, Jon.LikeLike
