[Perusing this morning's papers I see that the TPP negotiations have blown a tire. Polls show that 70% of Americans believe Hillary is untrustworthy and a consummate liar. Team Obama is demanding that Congress abandon even the Pelosi Principle in accepting the Iran deal with unknown and unknowable secret codicils. And, of course, as data from the states rolls in, Obamacare is living up to and beyond its worst prognostications. But for a bit of levity or very deep conspiracy, I point you to Joe Queenan in the 1aug15 WSJ who writes 'Clearly, the Donald Works for Hillary'. gjr]

Following up on our discussion of Second Amendment gun rights on RR and the impact of concealed carry weapons on crime prevention, I discovered some interesting facts in a recent study that can shed some light on future RR gun rights discussion: Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States
Abstract:
Since President Obama’s election the number of concealed handgun permits has soared, growing from 4.6 million in 2007 to over 12.8 million this year. Among the findings in our report:
– The number of concealed handgun permits is increasing at an ever- increasing rate. Over the past year, 1.7 million additional new permits have been issued – a 15.4% increase in just one single year. This is the largest ever single-year increase in the number of concealed handgun permits.
– 5.2% of the total adult population has a permit.
– Five states now have more than 10% of their adult population with concealed handgun permits.
– In ten states, a permit is no longer required to carry in all or virtually all of the state. This is a major reason why legal carrying handguns is growing so much faster than the number of permits.
– Since 2007, permits for women has increased by 270% and for men by 156%.
– Some evidence suggests that permit holding by minorities is increasing more than twice as fast as for whites.
– Between 2007 and 2014, murder rates have fallen from 5.6 to 4.2 (preliminary estimates) per 100,000. This represents a 25% drop in the murder rate at the same time that the percentage of the adult population with permits soared by 156%. Overall violent crime also fell by 25 percent over that period of time.
– States with the largest increase in permits have seen the largest relative drops in murder rates.
– Concealed handgun permit holders are extremely law-abiding. In Florida and Texas, permit holders are convicted of misdemeanors or felonies at one-sixth the rate that police officers are convicted.
My emphasis added.

Great to hear the French nat. security advisor told congressmen that killing the iran deal would be helpful. Reported to have said a year or so of turmoil and then they could get a better deal. The implication of the time frame he cited is obvious. Let the next President take a hard line and really negotiate then they can get a better deal in the long run. In the short run there is little more iran could do to foment trouble than it is already. The Saudi’s most recent reaction to all of this is to order 600 of the latest patriots and 500 of our newest 1000lb long range, deep penetrator, precision glide bombs. Put that all together with the Gulf Cooperation Council’s radar integration project and iran is not in a good position to launch any conventional attacks in the gulf.

In another indication of the attitude of iran, at the same time the treaty is under review the mullah releases a book justifying the destruction of Israel. He urges the flag of jihad to fly in Jerusalem according to the NY post. Its only in farsi right now, wouldn’t want the americans to read it too soon now would they (0 too)?

The reason the Democrats….Opps, I apologize. The reason those of the Left side of the aisle are giggling with uncontrolled glee at Republican Party blunders is it gives them a break from the fear of DOOM in 2016. They can read the tea leaves. Daily non stop stories of Ms. Clinton’s e-mail “untrustworthiness” (that is a big word now is it not?), and they now they are even looking to draft Uncle Joe Bidden for pete’s sake. I have to admit having a Joe Bidden living in The White House would be a satirest’s delight. Bernie is still an unknown and proudly proclaims he is NOT a Democrat. He ain’t purple either.
Bush has raised 105 million, Ms. Clinton 14 mil in the last accounting. No enthusiasm for her.
Now, I figure Clinton’s team negotiated with Obama’s team for a couple of months and came up with a workable deal. Obama stops signaling overtures and good vibes about Lizzy Warren and she will not dis or disagree with Obama, nor critize him on the trail. So, she has to calm up and achieve living the dream.
Anybody notice that instead of just talking a walk with Obama around Camp David and cut a deal, there is always negotians. Even her job at State was negotiated for weeks. Oh, she is one political junkie I tell ya.LikeLike

Re: Charles Koch advocating ending corporate welfare – sounds like he is channeling what the libs like Elizabeth Warren have been saying all along (and the Repubs have been silent on). Kind of throws a monkey wrench into the, “LaMalfa should chase subsidies for his rice farm because everybody else is doing it (tragedy of the commons)”, unenlightened self-interest argument. Koch seems to be advocating for the enlightened self-interest version/vision and advocating for good corporate citizenship vs. simple greed. Good for Mr. Koch. Of course, he can say that now since the Koch bros. are 10x wealthier than Trump!

It does”t do that at all.
It reinforces the idea that in a subsidized industry the only way to remain competitive is to claim the subsidies.LikeLike

Can’t the schools simply tell the Tea baggers no! Would they allow, for example, a communist group to pass out Mao’s Red Book as a political science addendum? I think not, but in principle it is the same concept, the meddling with our education system by an outside group. This whole 40 year plan thing reeks of brown shirt mentality. These people seem to live in the past failing to recognize that society has changed and evolved leaving them and their 19th century values behind. Something they, apparently, can neither understand or tolerate.
Well since we barely use it anymore anyway JoKe your idea intrigues me! If we can shelve the whole “tax me so you can live better” thing I’m on board….LikeLike

Gee Larry, I guess it all depends on whether you are opening your eyes and ears to BS or not. George made a pretty bold statement and I am just trying to determine where his polls came from. “70% of Americans believe Hillary is untrustworthy and a consummate liar.” without proof ranks pretty high on the BS scale. Taking George’s word for it may work for you but not for me. Oh, BTW, I think Hillary is a corporate goon just like Jeb and most of the rest of the candidates, so I am not defending her, I just want facts not conjecture.

Every time we drive by the old Schwartz Ranch on Bitney Springs Road I think about the movie “Protocol” starring Goldie Hawn that was partly filmed there in 1984. Fiction hit the nail on the head regarding politics then and now. Her speech is exactly how it is regarding those in government not having any idea who the Constitution represents…and she was going to watch them like a hawk.

Somethings are better left to the imagination. But, I must confess that as we get older, Hillary fully clothed will pass for ok. Speaking of tents, it’s a sad day. Ozzie the tent maker passed away last evening after his long fight with an undisclosed illness. Ozzie was well loved and designed some of the best outfits donned by our local Food Critic and Wine Taster. Don’t know why they call ’em a food critic. He has yet to criticize food, but I digress. Ozzie the Tent Maker will be missed and finding another With his talents will be a long difficult task.

It is Joe but the “Tea Bagging Brownshirts” that you are so concerned about are way late to the “long march through the institutions” Gramscian party.LikeLike

For the record – as a Tea Bagger I can report with some surety that no member I have met or even heard of (when we secretly assemble to conspire and tally up big corporate checks) has ever given any evidence of “trying to force their values on the non-believers i.e. the majority of Americans.” The only thing that brings Tea Party members together is the effort to work for an America wherein Americans who share values of smaller government, constitutionalism, individual enterprise, and capitalism may still be able to express and practice such values. That is NOT the other side “of the same coin” representing those “ragheads or commies” who indeed are in the business of imposing their values and methods on everyone at the pain of death. Any comparisons of what these people want with the aims of the Tea Party are simply specious.

Regarding the Tea Party v commies and Islamic terrorists. All the readers can now see that a lib/commie like JoeK thinks the terrorists who would chop off your head over Islamic religion are no different than Americans (many retired veterans like GeorgeR)simply trying to live within the Constitution and fight for individual freedom.

Re the update to “Dump Trump?”:
Wallace’s line of questioning is just a preview of what you’re going to see Thursday night. With Roger Ailes pulling the puppet strings, the “debate” will be little more than a love fest for red-meat Republicans.
I predict that the consumption of erectile dysfunction drugs will plummet Thursday night, and that people like Todd and Walt will be foaming at the mouth by the time the program ends.
Alas, I will miss all of this because we’ll be far from the madding crowd on vacation. But I doubt much will change by the time we get back.LikeLike

GeorgeB 423pm – You sound very pessimistic that the debate, or “debate” as you like, will reveal little to the voters about the relative merits of the Republican candidates. With the way you have “Roger Ailes pulling the puppet strings”, it appears that we have a fraudulent exercise in the making. In what way do you think that the “red meat” will be served to the Republican viewers.
And I do join with Walt’s 543pm in an unrequited yet keen anticipation of the Dems deigning to put their queen into any such equivalent line of fire, which is sure to singe her wings for further flight to a crisp.LikeLike

GeorgeR’s assessment is spot on about the press and their constipation about trying to start food fights. It is not Walt or I, it is the Boardman’s!
