The general circulation models (GCMs) still aren’t worth a crap.  For most of us able to read the literature, that fact has been known for well over a decade.  And looking at how GCM errors have remained large and unchanged, the models haven’t gotten any better.  But that makes no never mind to leftwing scientists hewing to the A21 objectives through their participation in the UN’s IPCC policy driving fiasco.  Now some really pocketbook numbing results are coming in to back up these conclusions – the nation’s high-tech solar plants are failing to deliver.  As an example, “a $2.2B project in California (see filched photo below) generates just 40% of its expected electricity.”  Why?  Well, when they ran the numbers during their design and construction phases, the GCMs predicted much less cloud cover during the lifetime of the plants – had to, remember less cloud cover leads to a warmer earth, and they had to dick with the model parameters to produce catastrophic global warming.  Problem was, when they drank that kool-aid in putting something in place like big expensive solar farms, they used the same hokey GCMs, and now the industry has its collective tit in a wringer.  Not only is operation and maintenance of all those thousands of mirrors and photovoltaics a bitch, they ain’t getting the sunshine promised by the expert climate ‘scientists’ (more here).  In the meantime central planners are hyping the hysteria for the next global warming conference this fall.

Hillsdale College, founded in 1844, has been a bastion of classical liberal education.  Early in the Great Society years it began weaning itself from accepting even a vestige of federal and state monies, not even allowing its students to avail themselves to such government support.  As a result it has maintained its standards and survived to become an internationally respected institution of liberal arts that teaches the classics and an unadulterated version of the US Constitution.  2.9M people worldwide receive Imprimis, its publication of excellent and evocative speeches given on campus.  It also fields online courses.  Its admission policy is colorblind, and it does not keep any politically correct metrics on its students.  It has no relationship with the Department of Education, and suffers from no government control.  Now, as you might expect, all these factors are enough to piss off Washington bureaucrats until their eyes are crossed.  As a consequence, the bastards have started working hard to find ways to bring Hillsdale to heel into the tightly controlled corral that used to be our system of higher education where freedom of speech, thought, and ideas were the currency of exchange among students and their professors.  The avenue now being pursued against Hillsdale is to corrupt the accreditation process administered by a group of agencies which today require colleges to supply all kinds of data having nothing to do with how well they turn out educated American adults who probably will not vote for progressives very much.  (more here)

Guaranteed National Income has been a recent topic in these pages (here and here).  It is a concept to implement since GNI is the only answer to massive systemic unemployment that may keep blood from our gutters.  The Cato Institute has recently published a policy analysis – ‘The Pros and Cons of a Guaranteed National Income’ – in which it dissects our $20T and counting failure to fight poverty over the last 40 years.  The document also contains a critical analysis of the various suggested  approaches to a GNI, and concludes that there exists no known solution toward which we should revamp our public policies.  Instead it soberly recommends that in this environment of unknowns we should proceed incrementally, starting with consolidating most of our 126 separate anti-poverty programs which today send checks to over 110M Americans.  This effort had to be started yesterday, and we need politicians in our state houses and Washington who understand more about systemic unemployment than, perhaps, how to spell it.

[16jun15 update]  Hillary is now stoking the great Liberal Lie Machine with her massive unfounded screeds about Republicans working tirelessly to deny minorities their voting rights, and the evils and impacts of income inequality.  But the big news for us conservatatians is the continuing reports of the Left’s efforts to roll back the First Amendment (among the other constitutional rights they target).  We hear from the Capital Research Center that if you “don’t like what your opponents are saying in the public square? Then have them locked up — that’s the apparent philosophy behind a recent broadside by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.). In a Washington Post op-ed, the Senator explained that groups who express skepticism about catastrophic global warming are enemies of science, just like the tobacco companies that denied the harms of smoking, and so federal prosecutors should use the RICO law and investigate those groups racketeering. Writing for PhilanthropyDaily.com, CRC senior fellow Martin Morse Wooster rebuts Whitehouse’s hare-brained idea to criminalize speech.”

That only the Left attempts to silence free speech has been a long-held thesis of RR.  I am still looking for reciprocal behavior from the Right.  Can anyone help?

fish 1008am – Our corrupt legal system is beyond my ken. The subsidies issue in Obamacare could not be more clear in the law’s statement in that the federal govt will allow tax credits for insurance purchased through exchanges “established by the state.” Ergo, no state established exchange, no Obamacare tax credit.
All else is perfidy reinforcing that no one knows what the language of a law means from its reading. It means whatever the most powerful forces in subsequent litigation want it to mean. We are no longer a nation of laws.

Well that’s because you’re a stodgy old white guy who is silly enough to believe that the words are supposed to mean something “as written”. You lack the vision of the cool hip kids who understand that the words means whatever they need them to say in order to get us to our radiant progressive future.

Did Nancy read that part before she voted for it?
Sorry but the SCOTUS, Federal and States are ridiculous. I go back ten years or so to the “decision” on “navigable” and when the SCOTUS got done it was even more murky.
Lawyers are not to be trusted on anything where there is a “meaning” of a word or phrase. My guess is the SCOTUS will do a John Roberts on the country and allow it. Even though Gruber said it was a trick.

That was my take as well…..words mean little when progressive “principles”….and potential voters…are at stake.

    M v M is just fine, Todd.
If Obamascare is/was winning its current SCOTUS battle 5-4, Roberts will switch his side, making it 6-3 and giving Roberts the right to draft the majority opinion which he will make less sweeping.
So, 10 quatloos is on the vote either being 5-4 giving Obamacare the coup de gras or 6-3 in favor of some loophole that gives them a fig leaf covering their claim no one meant to only give subsidies to Americans in states that built their own website despite putting plain language to that effect in the law in multiple places.

Will Common Core eventually lead to GNI? Maybe, maybe not. GNI appears to be the lowest common denominator agreed to by our nation’s lowest common denominator.

For a half century we’ve had a welfare state that punished work for those caught on the bottom. “GNI” is a way to fix that.
Hillsdale unfortunately, like most modern liberal arts institutions, ignore the math and science that were 3 of the original 7 liberal arts. The harder ones.
Common Core is nothing new, just another repackaging of discovery methods of teaching that the capital R Romantics who dominate colleges of education and school districs keep trying to get right, oblivious that it will never work. The Socratic Method doesn’t work when the students are standing on the shoulders of midgets standing in quicksand. As I’ve written before, Common Core math is Eye-dentical to California’s whole math that was rolled out in 1995, with the guy in charge of those standards being the guy Gates Foundation funding hired to chair the Common Core math standards. Failure is rewarded far too often in the modern Ed Business in the USA.

This is for Steven Frisch and his fellow travler warmers.
America’s Most Advanced Climate Station Data Shows US In A 10-Year Cooling Trend
Data from America’s most advanced climate monitoring system shows the U.S. has undergone a cooling trend over the last decade, despite recent claims by government scientists that warming has accelerated worldwide during that time.
The U.S. Climate Reference Network was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide “high-quality” climate data. The network consists of 114 stations across the U.S. in areas NOAA expects no development for the next 50 to 100 years.
The climate stations use three independent measurements of temperature and precipitation to provide “continuity of record and maintenance of well-calibrated and highly accurate observations,” NOAA states on its website. “The stations are placed in pristine environments expected to be free of development for many decades.” In essence, NOAA chose locations so they don’t need to be adjusted for “biases” in the temperature record.

    More here:
    http://dailycaller.com/2015/06/15/americas-most-advanced-climate-station-data-shows-us-in-a-10-year-cooling-trend/
This is cooling trend is being ignored by the political goons in Sacramentos, who insist the planet is warming and that if the citizens of California just pay enough cap and trade taxes, the world will be saved from global warming climate change. Only the warmers believe that.

Russ he is a grant whore, if he believed this the money would dry up. The taxpayers sure could use a break from his ilk. His SBC apparently only brings in $30,000 a year in memberships so perhaps the people are wising up to the AGW scammers.

Well Mr. Pope, I say you need to stop all those poor black women in Africa from burning wood for the daily meals. It spews tons of carbon into the air and is probably changing the climate in the Sahara. I mean, come on, at least have them put scrubbers on their campfires so we don’t have to breathe the carbon particles. Isn’t that a Catholic goal?
When religion gets into science I thought the the left always went apoplectic. Darwin in schools? No “creationism” allowed? But when someone agrees with the climate grant whores, all their “beliefs” get changed. They are the Pope’s best friend now. Jeeze!

I posted this at Watts Up With That and it seem to be catching on:
I am going to send a copy of Climate Change the Facts to His Holiness, Pope Francis at the Apostolic Palace 00120 Vatican City. If all of the readers of this blog were to send a copy, it could make an impact when Pope Francis’ mail box gets jammed by climate change facts. This in turn would boost the sales of this important book to the top of the sales charts.
    Here is one comment:

Russ, I would say that your suggestion is the most productive and helpful comment here. Let us send the book!
If the 1,000 of Anthony’s readers send books, the Pope might take notice.

RussS 833am – I also applaud your idea as being the most likely gesture to get noticed by the media as the encyclical gets published this Thursday. However, I do believe the impact of such a mass mailing will be primarily collateral. The Pope is not going to read the book, say ‘oh shit!’, and issue another encyclical whose message is ‘Just kidding, ignore previous encyclical.’ But hearing of the mass mailing may make enough others read the book, become skeptics, and contact their electeds re the ongoing AGW hysteria.
We are again reminded of Lord Keynes famous reply to a journalist questioning his reversal on an issue – ‘When new information becomes available, I change my mind. What do you do?’
