“Those are my principles, and if you don’t like them… well, I have others.”  Groucho Marx

George Rebane

It turns out that the Census Bureau faked the 2012 pre-election jobs report.  That is reported by zerohedge.com, Armstrong & Getty on AM650, and the National Review.  The list of underhanded things that Team Obama did to continue the Big Lie from Pennsylvania Avenue has grown to remarkable proportions, and the end is nowhere in sight.  (H/T to several correspondents)

Misdiagnoses are among the most common, costly and harmful medical errors.  But they are also some of the most preventable.”  (18nov13 WSJ)  Medical mistakes kill way north of 100K people a year in the US.  That is like a jumbo jet crashing every day with all aboard killed.  Were that to happen, there would be a national outrage with continuing demonstrations in front of the FAA headquarters and major aircraft manufacturers' facilities.  Yet we the sheeple are so cowed by the sanctimonious medical industry that we make not a peep.  How long will it be until we demand that physicians start using the available cloud-based AI diagnostic tools instead of flying blind with their fingers up their sunless orifices?  And with the atrocity of Obamacare looming over the land, the ongoing development of more capable ‘AI docs’ should be a national priority.

Bill Gates is guest editing the Dec2013 issue of Wired on how to fix the world.  And Bill Clinton is there to lend a hand.  Check out the thoughts of a thoughtful man after having so much that he can’t spend it all.  (more here)

Desperation time at The Union?  Did you see that its Other Voices column now contains infomercials with product descriptions and contact information included.  I was a bit taken aback by today’s piece on life coaching by Chuck Petch in the op-ed section.  (paywalled here)

Control and estimation theory join with algorithmics to illustrate the art of the possible with ‘athletic quadrotors’ in this amazing TED video.  The presenter’s narrative is accurate, succinct, informative, and entertaining as the miniature helicopters do their stuff in front of a slack-jawed and obviously beguiled audience.  I was entranced watching the video demonstration because it took me back to the same kind of work that I did as a DoD contractor, although the platforms that I worked on were designed for a more deadly kind of athleticism against Soviet submarines, surface ships, and aircraft.  But take it from me, working in control/estimation algorithmics is one of the most challenging, fulfilling, and enjoyable jobs in engineering (and they even pay you good money!).  In my ken, only AI research is its equal.  And when you embed AI into such algorithms, well, it doesn’t get better than that.  Enjoy the video.

[update] Just got this link to Congressman Tom McClintock's House floor speech – 'The Toll of Obamacare' – delivered today.  It summarizes well his remarks delivered last Saturday at the Nevada County Tea Party fundraiser.

Another Obama foreign policy masterpiece?  Afghanistan’s Karzai, that staunch tower of ethics and rectitude, has announced that he has gotten agreement for an ‘apology for mistakes made’ from our president.  He demanded this as a pre-condition for letting American troops remain in the country after December 2014 – and do what, continue ‘nation building’?  All this is reported with a straight face in the 19nov13 WSJ.  I sincerely hope that this is nothing but bluster from Kabul.  No one has spelled out what are America’s continuing interests in Afghanistan, yet we seem to act as if these remain significant as we field a constant shower of camel crap that is flung at us by the country’s corrupt government and warlords who have grown rich from the “hundreds of billions” we have spent in the country during the last decade.  Absent persuasive interests, what say we let the Taliban come back, cut their heads off, publicly whip their over-educated women, and put the country back on a solid footing of pre-medieval sharia law?  Since UAVs can now operate from carriers (here), we can then drone their terror-exporting butts as/when necessary, which is what we are doing now anyway.

RE: The Census Bureau. I seem to recall that one of the first things Obama did in his first term was to put the Census under the wings of The White House. I also recall that some cynics like moi were wondering why the change was being made.
Seems more likely that the workers did not take pride in their work. Maybe that was what Mr.Gregory was referring to when he posted the link about cheaters and liars are more apt to seek and obtain work in the government. And yes, manipulation for political purposes can and does occur. I would continue, but I don’t want to get audited.

Build your own quad copter and control them with open sources computers and sensors. Mored details here: http://www.aeroquadstore.com
Arduino is an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple I/O board and a development environment that implements the Processing/Wiring language. Arduino can be used to develop stand-alone interactive objects or can be connected to software on your computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP,PD). The open-source IDE can be downloaded for free (currently for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux) from http://www.arduino.cc
Here is a link to open source control code you can experiment with.
    http://code.google.com/p/aeroquad/
The AeroQuad is an open-source hardware and software project dedicated to the construction of remote controlled four-rotor helicopters, also known as quadcopters or quadrocopters.
AeroQuad hardware typically consists of an Arduino microcontroller (Mega-2560 or Uno) as the flight controller board, and an AeroQuad shield with various sensors, such as an accelerometer and gyroscope. AeroQuad software, written mostly in C and uploaded to the micro-controller via the Arduino IDE, currently supports Rate (Acrobatic) Mode that uses only the gyroscope for flight assistance, and Attitude (Stable) Mode that use both the gyroscope and accelerometer for auto-leveled flight assist. There are also additional sensors that provide numerous other optional functions, such as heading or altitude hold.
    Current Features
    • Multiple flight configurations are supported
    ◦ Quad X
    ◦ Quad +
    ◦ Quad Y4
    ◦ Tri
    ◦ Hex X
    ◦ Hex +
    ◦ Hex Y6
    ◦ Octo X
    ◦ Octo +
    ◦ Octo X8
    • Multiple flight angle estimation algorithms supported
    ◦ Improved DCM (best with magnetometer)
    ◦ ARG (best with no magnetometer)
    ◦ MARG (experimental)
    • Flight options supported
    ◦ Heading hold with magnetometer or gyro
    ◦ Altitude hold with barometer
    ◦ Altitude hold with ultrasonic sensor (best for low altitude hold and terrain following)
    • Enhanced battery monitoring options
    ◦ Enable auto descent
    ◦ Specify battery cell count
    ◦ Integration with On Screen Display (OSD)
    • Multiple receiver options
    ◦ 6 or 8 channel receivers supported
    ◦ PWM receivers
    ◦ PPM receivers
    ◦ PPM using hardware timer
    ▪ Specific support for Spektrum, Graupner, Robe, Hitec, Futaba, Hitec, Sanwa & others
    • Telemetry options
    ◦ Wireless telemetry on dedicated serial port
    ◦ Open Log binary write
    • Camera stabilization support
    ◦ Dedicated servo channels for roll, pitch, yaw
    • Custom OSD support for MAX7456
    ◦ Specify video standard to use
    ◦ Specify callsign to display
    ◦ Built in attitude indicator
    ◦ Display altitude in feet/meters
    ◦ OSD system which allows remote PID tuning!
    • Obstacle avoidance using ultrasonic sensors
    • GPS waypoints
Most of this hardware is available in Amazon. Open source software on the web. Have fun. My experiences is that the open source software and hardware works right out of the box. Point of disclosure, I am not yet skilled enough to build quad-copters yet. But, having fun playing with Arduino micro-controlers to build sensors loggers. Stay tuned.

Obamacare.gov has not yet finished even building the back end system that will actually pay the insurance companies for the chosen policy. They apparently haven’t even gotten to the point of being tested.

@Greg. Translated: The pretty parts are built, which are also aren’t working, but at least we can say they exist.
I think Representative Gardner demonstrated great restraint here. I’m trying to understand how I would be treated if I said only 30-40% of my project was actually completed post go-live. I would be fired, re-hired, and then immediately fired again just as a sacrifice to the customer.
Where are the whistle blowers? Wouldn’t you just love to see the internal memos telling everyone to keep their mouths shut?
I’m really at a loss how anyone could defend (as an apology) this system. This is more than an “all system have glitches especially new ones,” this system doesn’t even software that rises to the glitch category. It doesn’t exist!

Then there was the “seasonal adjusting”. Then the other excuses for not counting

As soon as we live Iraq, the Shiites and Sunnis will start killing each other as they have doing been for centuries and continuing to this day. Then they will turn their attention to the Kurds and start lopping off Kurdish melons for fun and sport.
Same with Afghanistan. Let them kill each other until the Tallywacker Taliban takes over and uses prisoners’ heads for soccer practice, just like they did before we got involved in that time forgotten place.. Follow the bouncing ball.
If and when we do leave, we should torch all the poppy fields with Napalm or at least have our fighters turn on the after burners as the nose up over the fields. That will really get that dope pushing President and his brother upset….upset until they look out the window and see the Tallywackers coming for them. And they ain’t be a’knocking to have a spot of afternoon tea.

After I stopped laughing at this astute bit of sarcasm, I started thinking if anyone had the nerve to name their start-up company this. I was thinking it might be a suicidal GenX ironic company name, or a Millennial start up in daft seriousness. Wrong on both assumptions, thankfully. Regarding the latter, this assumes that a Millennial would be disciplined enough to start a company of value beyond the current 17 apps/sites that just post selfie* variants.
I’m beginning to think the whole world is turning into the end scenes of Blazing Saddles.

Mr. Paul: Of course President George W. Bush led us into Afganistain, to answer the question you posed on comments 11-12. It was right after 9/11 and we told the Taiban to turn over Osama Bin Laying at the Bottom of the Sea Laden or else. They refused, we went in and took the country with less than 500 of our best. Some say 200 took most of the country. Dynamite fall from sky! CIA riding donkeys.
Now we are in the longest war in US History over in Afganistan. Hard to believe, isn’t it. We did not even get a nice warm Afgan Sweater for all our efforts. Yes, I am War Weary. Busting up persons, places, and things gets old when you reach a certain age.
At least someone is standing up for Women’s Rights over there and world wide. It ain’t the fems, that’s for sure. It ain’t Ms. Gloria Steinman or Ms. Golira Aldridge and it ain’t NOW. Not even Brother Ben. Its George W Bush and his gentle spirit wife, Laura. Boy, Laura is not outspoken like the the ranting Feminists professors on our college campuses nor like Maxine Waters defending the fairer sex. Laura is soft yet strong. Her campaign behind the scenes for literacy and women’s rights in shithole countries is just a continuation of her beliefs.
Remember that young girl in Pakistan who got plugged in the face because she was walking to school? That be against Allah’s will. Well, she got snubbed for the Noble Peace Prize consideration because the Ragheads got all upset and the committee dumped her like a bad habit. Poor courageous young lady, still fighting the good fight, even with the lovely Mullahs saying they will kill her if given the chance.
Who is standing tall for these oppressed enslaved women as the world remains silent on the issue? Why, it is Mr. and Mrs. Bush.

BillT, liberals could care less about the state of women in Muslim countries. But don’t dare say anything about Muslims here or they get outraged. My My. The greater good for all if we can help make it happen is to change the hearts and minds of the men in Muslim countries who treat women as chattel. Hell, the poor girls can’t even drive a car there!
So, when you pose a point to PaulE he will never agree that it is Bush that saved thousands of women in those two countries from rape, murder and slavery. He just can’t bring himself to give Bush any sincere thanks. Same with AIDS in Africa. I remember when the left chastised Reagan for an alleged neglect of the problem and then later we have Bush spending billions to help them over in Africa and the left is crickets. PaulE, why have you never thanked Bush for helping Afirca fight AIDS?

Whatever Bush did that raised the hackles of Lefties, “O” gets an attaboy, and a put on a pedestal for doing the exact same thing.
Bush got reamed for Katrina, but “O” gets a pass from his own disaster of ” Sandy”. I don’t recall the Bush Admin changing the rules mid stream like “O” and Co. did when Sandy made landfall. It was a “hurricane”,, until it was 20 feet from shore, then ” downgraded” to a “tropical storm”. And all because of money and disaster aid. ( we can’t be helping those Repub dominated voting arias)
But,,, “O” and Co. got a pass.
Here we are close to the Holidays. The war on Christianity is alive and well from the Leftists. And all at the same time protecting Mooslums ” religious rights, and from any form of persecution.

As far as changing the debate is was George that asked for a justification for our involvement in that country so I thought a current explanation from the President in charge at the time of our invasion would be relevant.
