ThatcherLady Margaret Thatcher was a world leader who warmed the cockles of my own and many a heart.  With Ronald Reagan she was instrumental in bringing the USSR down to a soft landing.  She also created enormous and beneficial change for Great Britain that had been on a dreadful socialist slide to oblivion since the end of WW2.  But to accomplish all that she had to literally start at her country’s nadir.  A tribute to her in the 8apr13 WSJ starts with –

In that dreary winter of 1979, the piles of uncollected trash in London’s Finsbury Park seemed to stretch for miles. The garbagemen were on strike. So too, at one time or another, were hospital workers, ambulance drivers, truck drivers, railwaymen. Also gravediggers: In Liverpool, corpses had to be warehoused as they awaited burial—yet another long queue that socialist Britain had arranged for its patient masses.

This was the “Winter of Discontent,” when Great Britain came about as close to economic collapse as at nearly any point in its peacetime history, and it was the country Margaret Thatcher inherited when, on May 3, she defeated the Labour government of James Callaghan to become Prime Minister—the first woman in the office and 49th in a line that includes some of the greatest figures of Western civilization: Winston Churchill, Benjamin Disraeli, the Duke of Wellington, William Pitt the Younger.

Thank you Lady Margaret and may you rest in peace.

[Addendum]  One of the greatest living historians, Paul Johnson, notes that ‘Not since Catherine the Great has there been a woman
of such consequence.”  His essay on Lady Margaret includes a more comprehensive perspective on her accomplishment, especially how she managed to push through policies that cured her country of what was then known as the ‘English disease’ – rampant socialism and “over-weening trade-union power” – and its impact on a once great country.

How inconvenient for Margaret Thatcher to die in the middle of the lame stream presses promotion of Hillary Clinton’s phony accomplishments, and cover up her failures in Libya, Egypt and Syria. Instead they are being forced to talk about a woman with real accomplishments. A woman who lead her failing country through some very tough economic times, won a war in the Falkland Islands, and helped bring down the Soviet Union to a soft landing. They were forced to celebrate a woman who was all about not compromising her principles and standing firm when confronted by liberalism.
The contrasts between Thatcher and Clinton are stunning!

Imagine Benghazi with a Thatcher in place rather than a Clinton or an Obama.
For all her faults, she knew how not ‘to go wobbly’ when it was time to not go wobbly.

I listened to a news report on her this morning and the stupid reporter said she “invaded” the Falklands and attacked Argentinian forces. That is why the press is so discredited. All they had to do was Google the truth that Argentina was the invader. Amazing.
I have said for many years the unattached triumvirate of Reagan, Thatcher and Pope John-Paul saved the planet from communism. Now we need them to save us from ourselves. Where are the leaders?

Ed Driscoll at PJ Media: ‘Horrible Jolt This Morning; How Awful Current Leaders Are’
Matt Drudge tweets that Margaret Thatcher’s death is “A horrible jolt this morning [reminding us] how awful current leaders are.” There are numerous reasons why, some of which are explored in Glenn Reynolds’ column in today’s New York Post, in which he modestly proposes that “We need an IQ test for politicians:”
But ignorance and incompetence are on regular display among our political class. Its members are good at what they do — but what they do, really, is raise money and win elections. There’s no particular correlation between those skills and any other kind of competence. In fact, given their record of passing increasingly dumb laws, if there’s any correlation at all, it’s a negative one.

Here is quote from Thatcher about climate given in a 1990 speech at the second World Climate Conference, in Geneva, “”The danger of global warning is as yet unseen, but real enough for us to make changes and sacrifices, so that we do not live at the expense of future generations. Our ability to come together to stop or limit damage to the world’s environment will be perhaps the greatest test of how far we can act as a world community,” she said. “We shall need statesmanship of a rare order.”

The truth behind this story is much more interesting than is generally realised, not least because it has a fascinating twist. Certainly, Mrs Thatcher was the first world leader to voice alarm over global warming, back in 1988. It is not widely appreciated, however, that there was a dramatic twist to her story. In 2003, towards the end of her last book, Statecraft, in a passage headed “Hot Air and Global Warming”, she issued what amounts to an almost complete recantation of her earlier views. Long before it became fashionable, Lady Thatcher was converted to the view of those who, on both scientific and political grounds, are profoundly sceptical of the climate change ideology. Alas, what she set in train earlier continues to exercise its baleful influence to this day. But the fact that she became one of the first and most prominent of “climate sceptics” has been almost entirely buried from view. –Christopher Booker, The Daily Telegraph, 12

Lady Thatcher was a scientist before becoming politician. She understood how science is done and saw through the global warmers claims. One interesting fact is that early in her scientific career she was on the team that invented soft serve ice cream.

Where are the true leaders in our day and age – leaders who will go out and do the right thing which may not happen to be politically expedient? I am waiting not so patiently…
