RL ‘Bob’ Crabb, Nevada County’s keen observer of foibles and follies, has taken the local blogosphere to task. His cartoon below appeared in the 15jan11 issue of The Union where he holds the chair as the newspaper’s regular apolitical cartoonist. A compendium of his work was recently published in Once Upon a Village (here).
We stand rebuked and promise to strive harder to avoid his ire.

The popular perception of politics today is that we are spending most of our time rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. “Let’s put them here on the left!” “No! They look much better over here on the right!” It seems to me that sane people would gather all the chairs, get some rope, and build a damn raft.

I must agree with RL. However, American political discourse has historically been vulgar to the civilized ear ever since King George ruled. I fear the language is cruder today, though, less eloquent and expressive, a dim reflection possibly of modern education. Perhaps the venting provides needed catharsis. Perhaps I don’t read the comments as a rule, and delete them from anything I forward, including some great writing on this blog.

I was honored once to have the local no growthers do a play at the Nevada Theater and I was the villain. I knew I had arrived!

It’s a nice sentiment, Dixie, but I fear that the animosity between the two factions has become so toxic that one would rather breathe flatulence than be in the same room where they would have to inhale the same air as the other.

What if we got a professional “facilitator” to moderate a discussion? What could it hurt? And just maybe it could help…I don’t think there’s anything wrong with local bloggers getting together in dialogue, etc. Since the issues aren’t, for the most part, covered in our traditional media here, that leaves the blogs to discuss/question what people are REALLY talking about on the street here. I’m game; anybody else?

It’s the curse of the internet, Barry. We humans are less likely to casually toss around insults like “scumbag” “wingnut” “liar” etc. when we are close enough to our adversary to be the recipient of a knuckle sandwich. We used to call it common courstesy.

How about a debating setup and invite the public? RL can represent the middle, Barry, Russ and George the right and Pelline, Frisch and Enos the liberals?

Maybe we can implement both Dixie’s and Todd’s suggestions by having a moderated/facilitated discussion of the issues among the parties and invite the public to provide an audience. There could even be a directed Q&A. Sounds interesting.

His one sentence rips with sometime no connection to the thread of the comment is sometimes laughable but mostly nasty, mean and not worth the electrons used to display them even here:

His dependance on multiple ID’s and logins is amusing but only showcases his immature reaction to almost all rational discourse. Were you to meet a person in RL that talked like him you might wonder if he were in need of an intervention.

Bobo, I don’t post on the Union. You and the NCDCC members do I guess. I am a lovable fuzz ball and many people like me. Go to my blog and you will understand why I am the last person that needs intervention. Also, my previous comment about a wallet was humor. It was so funny, your pal Steve Enos repeated it and he is a lefty. So, using your logic, Steve needs intervention eh? You need to lighten up. Dixie is trying to do something and yet you come to the thread and discuss me instead of the issue. I think you may need some intervention for distracted thinking.
