18thCenturyArmy The Supreme Court is hearing a landmark gun rights case (here).  I have lived when and where citizens were denied the right to bear arms – it was not a good time or place for humanity.  Therefore, I have little patience for people espousing restrictive gun control theories.  A measure of a person’s civilized behavior is when he can harm you yet he will not, and not his behavior when he has been constrained to harm no one, not even in the defense of family or self.  Throughout history, and especially in the twentieth century, the state has been and remains the greatest killer of its own people.  Our founders knew this, many of our recent leaders do not.

• The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control.
• “Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not.”  ~Thomas Jefferson
• “Those who trade liberty for security have neither.” ~John Adams
• Free men do not ask permission to bear arms.
• An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.
• Gun control is not about guns; it’s about control.
• Only a government that is afraid of its citizens tries to control them.
• Know guns, know peace, know safety.  No guns, no peace, no safety.
• You don’t shoot to kill; you shoot to stay alive.
• Assault is a behavior, not a device.
• The Second Amendment is in place in case the politicians ignore the others.
• Guns have only two enemies; rust and politicians.
• When you remove the people’s right to bear arms, you create slaves.
• You only have the rights you are willing to fight for.
• What part of ‘shall not be infringed’ do you NOT understand?
• The United States Constitution (c) 1791. All Rights Reserved.

[For the record – I am a lifelong NRA member, a member of the Nevada County Sportsmen’s Club, a former combat arms officer (US Army), avid shooter, and gun owner.  I support the concept of par force and extending our firearm laws to include those of Switzerland.  H/T to an RR reader who sent some of the above material that I have edited for this post.]

[11mar2010 update] Thanks to RR reader Anna Emery (see comments) we can now see the video that I originally wanted to include with this post.

Your list should be a poster on the wall of every home in America!

Our family tradition is to buy a new gun and ammo each election day. I am shopping for what to buy next fall.
    Great piece on “Par Force”.
“The universal possession of force on par with local state authorities should be sufficient to prevent such perverted authority from quickly snuffing out or ‘containing’ the griev-ance.”

I want government to keep their hands off my guns and my ammunition! The folks in sacramento here in California really don’t undertand this. I will attend this weekends gun show in Sacramento.

    Steve,
Love it when we can agree on something, the government should keep their hands of everyone’s guns!

I’ll agree with all of you on the possession of firearms. I think everybody walking around in public loaded for bear is a recipe for disaster, though. Even in the wild west they made you check your guns at the door, especially in saloons. Probably a good idea for Starbucks too. Too much caffeine can drive some folks over the edge.

    George,
I’ve told Sini that I consider you somewhat of my hero for your views and insight. If you haven’t seen this little piece on Switzerland, check it out!

Interesting that a Swede’s gun safe has only english bumper stickers…
    An absolutely incredible shooting range!
When their period of service has ended, militiamen have the choice of keeping their personal weapon and other selected items of their equipment. In this case of retention, the rifle is sent to the weapons factory where the fully automatic function is removed; the rifle is then returned to the discharged owner. The rifle is then a semi-automatic or self-loading rifle.
To carry firearms in public or outdoors (and for an individual who is a member of the militia carrying a firearm other than his Army-issue personal weapons off-duty), a person must have a Waffentragschein (gun carrying permit), which in most cases is issued only to private citizens working in occupations such as security.

In Switzerland has a very small standing army, and yet a very large quickly assembled militia. There “most able-bodied civilian men of military age keep weapons at home in case of a national emergency. These weapons are fully automatic, military assault rifles, and by law they must be kept locked up. Their issue of 72 rounds of ammunition must be sealed, and it is strictly accounted for.” Also see http://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/arch/arcwas/repusa/waslea/wasfcs/gunown.html
