George Rebane

A correspondent of undeclared political bent sent me the following observation making the rounds. “The Democrats have suddenly developed a keen sense of morality.  John Edwards has been banned from making a speech at the Democratic National Convention for having an affair and lying about it.  In his place, Bill Clinton will be speaking.”

Now with Biden in the ship
with his voluminous flapping lip
to contribute a bountiful trove
of material for Karl Rove.

McCain presents an acknowledged conundrum for the conservatives.  But, the Republicans don’t know how to handle their Congressional candidates either.  Those up for re-election promise that this time they will not behave like drunken sailors on shore leave with poker winnings in their pockets, while the new GOP hopefuls promise not to act like their veteran colleagues.  Tough to spin.  With or without their white hats, the Democrats have no such problems, since they have always known what to do with other people’s money.

George- “Drunken sailors”? After 30 years, 8 ships, and 10 overseas deployments, most of the sailors I encountered spent what time they had ashore in a sober state, spending their hard-earned money on tours, souvenirs, museums, etc.
The real difference between sailors and Congress is that sailors are a better class of people.

Agreed, and with apologies to the overworn sailor allegory. Next time I will use people more familiar to me – the dogface GI. Some of these young men I have had the pleasure/duty to get out bars before they caused international incidents. Amen, on the Congressional comparison.

Nate: I believe it was John McCain who said, as a former drunken sailor, I greatly resent being compared with members of Congress!

Good point Nate. Happen to be out of town, but couldn’t help but miss this LOL. My father, a UCLA master’s degree graduate and a Navy man would have agreed with you. He also used to talk about the sweatheart deals secured by UCLA professors (especially the ones who profess to be fiscally conservative). Kind of ironic, eh?:

    Something to think about.

George- Eveidently, based on his comment, McCain is making the same contrast as I, only more so. Based on Navy lore, McCain was legendary as a junior officer. I do believe you could say he had some very “sobering” experiences later on.
Nevertheless, the term is insulting to the vast majority of professionals who go to sea. It’s an anachronism.
By the way, I’d call Steve Decamp (265-1576) before I started parroting CABPRO info, i.e., check the facts.

Don’t know why Nate is so on the offensive these days – he has a great sense of humor or had should I say? Maybe he needs a vacation – sit out in front with the citizens of this county and listen to what the BOS instruct staff to do and then view the results – We all want a fire plan that is good for Nevada County – not just for CABPRO or SYRCL or any special-interest group. An easy-to-follow, makes sense plan. I think the current plan has a lot of that going for it – but this last draft certainly doesn’t have everything the BOS asked of staff in April. Check the facts. It’s give and take, Nate. Relax!
