"Peace in our time!"  Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin, 1938

George Rebane

Well hell, President Trump did not pull that one off in Anchorage.  With all the talking heads on Fox doing their best to put a good face on it, there’s no denying that Trump got nothing out of this abbreviated summit that he previewed the world as his goal.  Putin got everything – a global stage on which to show his equivalence to Trump, and a chance to rope-a-dope the west from the embarrassing post-summit podium that turned out to be an aborted joint press conference.  Trump just stood there and took it, when he should have been on AF1 headed back to Andrews.  Neither leader wanted to answer any spontaneous questions from a press corps that knew there would be no cease fire in Ukraine.  Both quickly got on their planes and outta there.

To add insult to injury, everyone now expects that there will be an embarrassing follow-on meeting after Putin has ample time to continue bombing the crap out of the Ukrainians and reoutfitting his forces for the next push to grab the four-city defensive line west of Donbas.

What I hope that we’ll hear out of our Fearless Leader, after he gathers his wits, is that the secondary sanctions on Russia will immediately go into effect, and that the EU/NATO leaders will immediately start shipping Zelinsky the promised weapons they will by from America.  Oh yes, and encourage the Ukrainians to start deep strikes into Russia, primarily Moscow and St Petersburg.  If Trump does nothing but talk about a second meeting during which this time he really, really will get Putin to behave, then this summit may well go down as Trump’s own Afghanistan debacle.

I will be the happiest if I have to eat these words.

[16aug25 update]  Seems that my sentiments about Anchorage are being widely shared today by usually Trump-favoring outlets like the WSJ.  The lamestream’s responses were preprogrammed regardless of the summit’s outcome.  The 16aug25 WSJ news coverage (here) concludes with, “In contrast to the handshakes and smiles that characterized the start of their meeting on the taxiway at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Putin and Trump looked stone-faced during much of the news conference. Putin spoke for roughly eight minutes. Trump then spoke for three minutes, before they both left.”

The outcome was more harshly covered in the op-ed pages (here).  “… the Russian achieved one of his major goals from the summit, which is the start of his rehabilitation as a world leader. The summit ended his isolation from the West, and he gave up nothing for it. He also appears to have gained more time to continue bombing Ukrainian cities and slowly taking more territory.”

“…and that the EU/NATO leaders will immediately start shipping Zelinsky the promised weapons they will by(sic) from America. Oh yes, and encourage the Ukrainians to start deep strikes into Russia, primarily Moscow and St Petersburg.”
And that would be the equivalent of another country to start strikes against NY and DC.
    And we would then…?
Look – Russia is going to win this war because:
1 – They have an overwhelming military and man power advantage over Ukraine.
2 – Have a lot of the world on their side.
3 – Their leader has no qualms as to how many of his own people die.
4 – The folks that are against them either can’t or won’t really dig in and fight. How many key-board warriors who want to defeat Putin are willing to send their sons to die in Ukraine?
Look – I get that Putin is a “BAD MAN”. I knew that when I first heard of him because he had been of high rank in the KGB. A typical high-intelligence psychopathic thug with the added bonus of having a bad case of ‘short-man’ complex.
He was that same man when Obama and H. Clinton fawned all over him and that sure didn’t age well, did it?
If you don’t like seeing Putin take part or all of Ukraine, then maybe go back to the Korean War where somehow the US decided it would start to fight wars it had no intention of winning. And it was downhill from there. We (and most of Europe) are no longer serious countries when it comes to our own national interests.
    Russia and China are.
Until that changes – all that we(folks against Putin) can do is wave our hands in the air.
You want peace? Prepare for war.
The US and most of Europe blew our wad on fighting “climate change”, “colonialism”, and “white privilege”. All of which were and are nonsense issues.
The sad reality is we need to unite with Russia to try to fend off China. Just like we united with Stalin to fight Hitler. And Stalin was worse than Hitler.
Or maybe some of the readers out there can come up with some other solution, but please don’t start with a Rodney King quote.

    Ummm…
Probably not – I think Vlad will simply start flattening Kiev and the other major cities at a much more furious pace.
Putin might be evil but not insane.
And the folks around him are loyal but really don’t want to see Russia turned into an ashtray.

Russia is known as a really big gas station with nuclear weapons.

So&So – Isolationist Maga actually supports the Obama of old. Obama did not want to engage, he did not want to send weaponry to Ukraine. Remember when you all joked that he would only send blankets, and how you thought Trump was so tough because he allowed some more sophisticated weaponry to be sent there?
Trump is ignorant, he still thinks Russia is 11 times zones large and a massive world power.
Russia’s economy is sputtering, Putin is having a hard time coming up with warm bodies to send to the front, he already sent his convicted rapists and murderers to plunder Ukraine.
Trump has made a big deal out of meeting with Netanyahu and Putin, and what is the result?
Netanyahu is coal rolling Gaza, and mass murderer Putin was just given a big world stage to stand upon courtesy of Trump laying out the red carpet.
Trump treated president Volodymyr Zelenskyy like an angry child that needed to be punished when he visited the White House and was thrown out after being brow beaten and emasculated by our powerless Vice President.
    Putin gets the Red Carpet.
    Trump is a Useful Idiot.
If anyone is fawning over Russia it is Trump who keeps threatening to impose severe sanctions, but never does.

Donald Trump – Chairman-for-Life (of the Kennedy Center)
    The Daily Beast
Trump, 79, Has Deranged Rant About ‘Grass’ at Kennedy Center
President Donald Trump embarked on a bizarre rant about grass as he spruiked plans to renovate the Kennedy Center and beautify the nation’s capital.
Speaking at the performing arts precinct on Wednesday, the 79-year-old suddenly pivoted from announcing recipients of the Kennedy Center’s annual awards, to musing about “fixing up” Washington, D.C.
“We’re going to make it so beautiful again,” the former real estate mogul told reporters and guests.
President Donald Trump announced the Kennedy Center Honorees while speaking at an event at the Kennedy Center on August 13, 2025 in Washington, DC.
President Donald Trump announced the Kennedy Center Honorees while speaking at an event at the Kennedy Center on August 13, 2025 in Washington, DC.
“We’re going to be redoing the parks, redoing the grass. You know, grass is a lifetime, like people have a lifetime, and the lifetime of this grass has long been gone. When you look at the parks where the grass is: all tired, exhausted.
“We’re going to redo the grass with the finest grasses. I know a lot about grass because I own a lot of golf courses—and if you don’t have good grass, you’re not in business very long.”
Trump’s meandering reflections on the importance of grass came as he paid homage to some of his 1980s heroes, nominating several for this year’s Kennedy Center awards.
Among them were Hollywood actor and Trump supporter Sylvester Stallone; Phantom of the Opera star Michael Crawford; disco queen Gloria Gaynor; and country crooner George Strait.
Legendary rock band KISS was also nominated—despite lead singer Paul Stanley once slamming Trump’s efforts to subvert the 2020 election in Georgia as “abhorrent”; “mob boss behavior” and “a true danger to our democracy.”
However, Trump described the band as “incredible people” before veering to the topic of the renovations he helped progress as the newly appointed chairman of the center’s board.
Trump has long viewed the Kennedy Center to be a storied institution in “tremendous despair” due to what he claimed was bad management.
This is also how he has viewed Washington D.C. more broadly, fueling his desire to assert control of the nation’s capital, both physically and politically.
Plans unveiled this week include deploying the National Guard, federalizing the metropolitan police and threatening to remove homeless people—particularly along streets that Trump’s motorcade passes to and from the White House.
The president has also put his personal stamp on the White House itself, paving over the Rose Garden with stone tiles and yellow umbrellas, adding gold embellishments to the Oval Office, and announcing plans for a $200m ballroom reminiscent of his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. you
“We’re fixing it up so beautifully,” Trump said of his White House revamp on Wednesday.
“It needed it. It’s been many, many years since it’s been properly taken care of. It’s incredible—one of the great places of the world.”

Remember when your ilk was screaming and crying about Obama releasing six billion dollars to Iran… when is “tough as nails” Trump going to start using these Russian funds to arm Ukraine?
“Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States and its allies have taken steps to identify and freeze assets belonging to the Russian government and individuals closely connected to President Vladimir Putin. This has resulted in the freezing of approximately $300 billion in Russian foreign exchange reserves, with the vast majority held in European financial institutions (estimated at roughly $200 billion), and approximately $5 billion held in U.S. financial institutions. The EU is exploring using the interest earned on these frozen assets to help fund Ukraine’s defense, according to Reuters.”

We can continue to fight and get people killed in WWIII style, or we can recognize the obvious and avoid a repeat of the horrors of the 20th century. Reality check. The Unipolar World Order which began with the collapse of the USSR ends today. Such world order no longer reflects reality. Today, we will now re-enter the more conventional multi-polar world order. I understand that for many of you this is difficult transition, because of the resultant uncertainty of this new world order, but it will be fine, and you will be okay and will indeed survive the transition. And George, I adore you, but your speculations about Putin wanted to take over Europe in a Hitler-esque kind of way are simply not supported by evidence. Today is not 1938 Munich. Trump is not Chamberlain. NATO countries need to just chill out and stop worrying about Russia and instead worry about making their own countries great.
Everything here in Moscow is great. People here want peace. They do not want to have anything to do with Europe militarily. They just want to trade and enjoy their lives. Also, they love DJT, because he is willing to begin building trust in an effort to make peace. Trust. We need to start trusting each other, or we will end up in a war that will kill way more than the two million killed during this war in Ukraine.
Everybody just calm down and breathe. Everything is fine and if it is not fine, we will be no worse for the wear.

I’m sure many in Russia are kept in the dark about the reality of the war, but hardly any different than the Biden admin declaring the border closed and under control while we see video on non-govt news media of hordes of illegals pouring across.
Barry stated that the Russian people want no military action in Europe. He didn’t say Putin, he said the people. Does BeerBelly think the same as his leader?
I deal in reality and the Russian military will continue to fight and kill and destroy until there is a capitulation by Kiev or until Kiev no longer has the man-power to fight. It’s not a matter of liking or hating the Russians or Putin. Xi is worse than Putin, but he was welcomed in SF and given the red carpet treatment because the reality is we’re stuck right now being dependent on China for all sorts of crucial goods such as medicine and chips.
I never had much faith in a peace deal by Trump because the only card Trump can play now is the threat of full-on US military engagement.
Sorry – not an option – we’re broke. And Ukraine is simply not worth American lives.

France – MAGA propaganda minister -0
Following Press Secretary Leavitt’s stunning response to French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann’s statement that France should reclaim the Statue of Liberty because the US no longer upholds its original values, Glucksmann doubled down last night.
    “Dear Americans,
Since the White House press secretary is attacking me today, I wanted to tell you this:
    1. Our two people are intimately linked by History, the blood we shed and the passion for freedom we share, a passion symbolized by this Statue that was offered to the United States by France to honor your glorious Revolution.
    2. As the press secretary for this shameful Administration said: without your nation, France would have “spoken German.” In my case, it goes further: I would simply not be here if hundreds of thousands of young Americans had not landed on our beaches in Normandy.
    3. Our gratitude to these heroes and their sacrifices is therefore eternal.
    4. But the America of these heroes fought against tyrants, it did not flatter them. It was the enemy of fascism, not the friend of Putin. It helped the resistance and didn’t attack Zelensky.
    5. It celebrated science and didn’t fire researchers for using banned words. It welcomed the persecuted and didn’t target them.
It was far, so far from what your current President does, says, and embodies.
    6. This America, faithful to the wonderful words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, your America, is worth so much more than the betrayal of Ukraine and Europe, xenophobia, or obscurantism.
    7. We all in Europe love this nation to which we know we owe so much. It will rise again. You will rise again. We are counting on you.
    8. And it is precisely because I am petrified by Trump’s betrayal that I said yesterday in a rally that we could symbolically take back the Statue of Liberty if your government despised everything it symbolizes in your eyes, ours, and those of the world.
It was a wake up call.
    9. No one, of course, will come and steal the Statue of Liberty.
The statue is yours. But what it embodies belongs to everyone.
And if the free world no longer interests your government, then we will take up the torch, here in Europe.
    10. Until we meet again in the fight for freedom and dignity, we will be the continuators of our shared history and the protectors of our treasure: more than a statue of copper and steel, the freedom it symbolizes.”

    re: the Statue of Liberty.
Don’t like Wikipedia that much, but it is handy sometimes:
“The idea for the statue was conceived in 1865, when the French historian and abolitionist Édouard de Laboulaye proposed a monument to commemorate the upcoming centennial of U.S. independence (1876), the perseverance of American democracy and the liberation of the nation’s slaves”
Now, what that has to do with infinite immigration is kind of a mystery to me. You might as well attach any old political cause you’d like.
